I just started playing again this year. Never could hit the driver, so the three wood was my choice off the tee. Now, I've had so much trouble with the three wood, it has joined the driver in my closet. I use a three or four iron on my tee shots, sometimes a one iron if I'm really striking the ball well. I lose some distance, but it's more fun hitting from the fairway than the rough, weeds, or woods. I've accepted my limitations.

I had my 4 iron in my bag until I got a 3 wood. I can hit my 3/4 iron fine, but I just figured I never really needed it. I have a lot times where I have to hit 5 iron or 3 iron. I keep my 3 iron for tight par 4s or long par 3's. I took my 4 iron out at the beginning of this season and I've never missed it. Also, I play at a bunch of different courses so it's not like I'm playing the same course over and over where the yardages are the same.
I use my 4i quite frequently whether I play from longer tee's or shorter tee's.
From the longer tee's, there are par 3s I play that warrant a 4i and also, long par 4s that do as well.
From the shorter tee's (6200-6500yds), there's always usually a shortish par 5, say 480-495 or so where I can be left with 210-215 to the green which, is a perfect 4i distance.
