I guess my question should be anything else out there comparable for less money. I have had a Matrix MFS 65 orange shaft and loved it. It was very smooth and stable. I love powerful feel of the kick of the shaft without losing any stability. All the talk about the TP-7x and its playing characterisitics have got me wondering but the price tag is just too steep. I just went through a fitting session and was told to get a low launch/low spin shaft even though my swing speed is only 98mph. Anyway, I was hoping to get some advice on here. Thanks.

i've never hit one, but i had a thread kinda like this one, asking about the matrix line. Gascan seemed to not be too impressed with it for its price, and he said that he thought there were several superior shafts for less. I'd ask him because he didnt tell me which shafts he recomended.
good luck

i cant talk about the other shafts, but i do have a diamana blueboard 73S in my driver. I think its a great shaft, however it can start to get heavy and hard to load late in the round because of the sitffness trhoughout the shaft. The ballflight tho is great, it launches medium-low but it is very stable for me.
-yea gascan knows everything

awtryau89,

The Ozik TP-7X is a very advanced shaft, the big advantage of Matrix's TP series is the dynamic spin reduction obtained from their proprietary process which helps reduce side spin as well as spin overall; however, it will not cure all your directional woes (just ask Justin Rose). They feel uncharacteristically smooth for such firm shafts which is one of the advantages. The TP-7X is more of a tip stiff design which helps players who release their wrist cock very late and are looking to keep ball flight and spin rate down. Also, the wide range of flex options which is great for fitting players who are inbetween flexes. Also, remember that it weighs in at around 75g which is heavier than the shafts you are used to playing and may take some adjustment and cost some swing speed. However, there are many shafts with comparable bend profiles for a fraction of the price. Looking into shafts that are more butt stiff and tip stiff and flexible in the midsection, the Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana line is very good. As the weights get heavier, remember that tip becomes increasingly stiff, so take that into consideration. The 83S will play noticeably stiffer than the 73 or 63S. The venerable Fujikura 757 probably set the standard for tip stiff but stiff shafts, it's very comparable to the 73g Diamana, perhaps a bit stiffer and is an excellent shaft for players seeking a mid launch and lower spin. Graphite Designs new Pershing is an even more inexpensive version of the 757 that plays a bit softer and smoother overall, yet can stand up to the hardest of swings. It's an oustanding shaft and it's fast become a favorite of mine (former 757 user) especially considering its price of only $100 installed. Going the opposite direction to something that is still tip and butt stiff but stiffer feeling overall, the Grafalloy Blue is a great shaft fitting that profile. Fast tempo, very aggressive swingers and hitters often like this shaft over some of the other options. Those are just a few of the options on the market, there are plenty more, but to know for sure, I'd have to see your swing and how it fits into these bend profiles to know for sure. I don't know much about the Axiv series, I do know they're very high quality, but I have no experience with them yet.

Gascan,
Thanks so much for the insight and the PM reply. I sent you another reply via PM. I have a couple of drivers I play. I have the older Cobra I mentioned in the PM and it works the best for distance but is a good bit loose. I have to be very careful with my swing and thing sometimes leads to me "thinking" about my swing too much when playing. I am also using a Speeder 757 right now in a Titleist 905R (not a Speeder by Titleist) and it is still the best combo I have found for control. It gives me the best spin numbers on the LM but my launch is a bit low. What I would like to do with a newer driver I get this year is combine the control and distance and that is the reason for my searches right now. I am hoping the high MOI driver will help with control and have hotter faces and I can combine that with the perfect spin control shaft and I will be in heaven. This is like the search for the Holy Grail and I may be in for a long search.

One other thing I might mention. I have spoken to 2 Matrix dealers and they both think I might not be a good fit for a TP-7x and more suited for a Code 6. The title of the thread is really telling the story if you read between the lines here. I am looking for a shaft with Ozik type performance for far less money.

The Code 6 is a great shaft! In the same price range is the new XCON as well. I'll have those in a week or two.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
