Rangefinders with the "SLOPE" feature?

Aside from the obvious where you can not use the slope feature for competition, does anyone use it and do you think it's worh the extra $100?

Bill, my pops has one with the slope feature and although it's great to know how it 'should' play...for an extra $100 you could do a fairly good estimate by your own...and that's free. for as much as he used it without the slope, i used it without. sure it's a great feature but, i don't think it's worth it. it's like getting a bmw and then sayin, 'should i buy the sport seats for $1750 or are the ones that come standard good enough...?"

I didn't get the slope feature because it is not within the rules handicap or tournament scores. The distance is just giving you  information you are entitled to and can get by maps or pacing, but slope is something that you have to estimate on your own.  I also did not see the point of spending the extra money for it as well.

I did not get the slope feature on my Tour V2, and I can't imagine why anyone would want it.  I can't see why it would be worth $100 more to make it unusable for anything but casual play.  I can usually make a pretty good estimate of the elevations I find on most courses, and I play on every kind of terrain from the plains to the Rockies.  It's usually just going "x" clubs over or under your standard for the distance.  It's like learning to judge wind, only easier.

And then there are some of us who don't give a rat's backside about 'tournament legal'. ;)

Tournament golfers use the slope feature all the time when mapping out a new course. It's may be easier than "learning to judge the wind" but learning to judge wind is difficult (particularly given funny lies and/or gusts and/or being in trees) AND it's better to know a shot is "+7" than to think "I think it's a full club more."

I really like the Leupold GX-4 because you can switch faceplates and measure slope when you want, or use it with just yardage when you want to do that, too.

Just a clarification Erik - I said that I can't imagine why anyone would want it, not that "nobody else would want it."  Most golfers say that they aren't even good enough to need to know the distances as accurately as what a laser will give them, so adding yet more accuracy seems to me to be redundant.  The guy asked if it was worth it and I gave my opinion, just like you did.

Then I have to assume that your posted handicap was legally established too without the use of slope measurement?  Just asking since you brought it up....

I live relatively close to Houston.. Not much elevation change here so there definitely isn't much need for the slope feature.. My Bushnell Tour V2 is great.. And if you're like me and don't have the slope feature, you're still going to be in a much better position than those who are stepping it off from the 150 marker..

No, it's not a legal handicap per USGA. It's just a number based upon 90 or so rounds downloaded from my skycaddie to their website.

I'm sure it's a vanity handicap (the one under round I shot last Sunday was a fluke, trust me...). But friends I play with don't believe me when I tell them it's bogus, I'm really a 10-15, and we should play $20 a hole straight up. They just laugh and put their hands over their wallets.

I totally agree with Fourputt...i'm a high handicapper and I dont need de 1 or 2 yards more or less I need the 10 or 20 when I'm firing from the adjacent fairway cus I just sliced or hooked the ball LMAO!!!

I have to disagree.  MORE accuracy cannot be a bad thing.  It's the whole reason for buying a rangefinder in the first place.  I'd been a GPS guy for years and it really helped my game.  However, eventually the "I've got Front Middle Back #'s of ___.....but how FAR back is that pin" still introduces a bit of uncertainty (never a good thing in golf).  As does watching your GPS change numbers as you stand still....or your buddies being 3-5 yards different than yours consistently.  My Laser RFer changed all that and my game once again took a step forward .......as I feel even MORE confident that I've got a solid distance TO THE PIN.

After playing a VERY hilly course yesterday......I'm seriously considering a SLOPE RFer for that reason.....and the Leupold 4X for the ability to be Tournament legal (although I generally ONLY play in scrambles and I don't think it would be an issue there).

For those who have them......how accurate do you find the calculated "flat and level distance" using your slope feature?
