I hit my 4H 200-220 depending on how i choke down on it.  I plan on getting a new driver soon.  Also I'm looking at whether I should get 2H 3H or should I get a 3W and 3H or something.

I dont use my 3W at all right now, plus depending on how I hit a 2H I might not need one?  If I get a 2H and 3H with a mismatched 4H (wasn't fitted for this 4H) do you think I would eventually have to replace this 4H... I hit it fine so I'm not sure.

I wouldn't mind having a club longer then the 4H, but not sure which route I would like to go down.  What do you guys recommend?

Essentially I dont know how to set up my bag..

Ideally I think

Driver

3W (the one I currently have.. but if I replace it would I hit it more? IDKK)

2H

3H

4H

5i-9i

PW
GW
SW

Putter

I'm not sure if I should get a new 3W or 2H, or 5 wood or 7 wood for  2H or 3H  and If I did buy 2 hybrids that I was fitted for maybe I should buy a 4H that matches?

Basically I wish I was rich, I would just replace them all :(

Driver: adams.gif Speedline 9032LS RIP Shaft (Stiff)

3 Wood: adams.gif Oviation 3Wood

Hybrids: taylormade.gif Rescue 18* 3H - 22* 4H

Irons: callaway.gif X-24 Hot Irons 5-PW

Wedges: cleveland.gif CG15 52, 56

Putter: odyssey.gif PT 82

Ball:  e6

My setup is pretty much the same as yours except that I have stuck with the 4i rather than a 4h. I tried the 4h (23 degrees) but found I missed the 4i on longer par 3s (where I feel the iron is still more accurate than my hybrid) and also the 4i is my go to club for punching recovery shots out from under trees. A shot I need quite regularly.

My setup:

Driver 10.5

3 wood 15

2h 18

3h 20.5

4i - PW

GW 52

SW 56

Putter

I'm pretty happy with this setup but I must admit the 3 wood doesn't get much use these days except on tight/short driving holes where I use it as an alternative off the tee. For approaches on long par 4's or second shots on Par 5's the 2h or 3h are my go to clubs. I've lost confidence in my 3 wood off the deck recently and unless I hit it perfectly I don't gain any real distance benefits over the 18 degree 2h.

There isn't enough value for me in having the full spread of long irons/hybrid, I get more out of carrying an extra wedge.  I replaced my 4I with a 3H to fill the gap between my 5 wood and 5 iron:

Driver (9.5)

3-wood (13)

5-wood (18)

3H (19)

5-9I

PW (really a 10 iron)

GW (51)

SW (56)

LW (62)

Putter

My 3 wood is a very good short driver but I don't hit it off the ground.  The 5 wood, on the other hand, is a real champ.  I'm still trying to come to grips with my Hybrid.  The lofts between the 3H and 5W are deceiving because the shaft in the 3H is quite a bit shorter.

In my  bag:

 Diablo Octane Tour 9.5, 18  -  6DT 19 (3I Hybrid) -

 Diablo Forged Irons 5-PW -  Tom Watson wedges 52,56,60 - 64 (generic)

 D.A.R.T. Belly Putter

 B330-RX Balls

In short, I would make sure I have the proper loft gaps and pick whichever club you are the most comfortable with. Personally, I don't think it makes much of a difference whether or not you're hitting a 5w or 3h, which are both typically about 19*. I definitely would not go without a 3w, which I use off the tee frequently. My long-club setup is:

Driver (8.5)

3w (15)

3h (19)

3i (21)

Do you go with your 2h off the tee when not hitting driver? Since you even have a 2h (which I'm assuming is about 17*), maybe get a strong 3w to use as a second driver to complement the hybrids and maintain the proper gaps. I would just keep whichever clubs you like and build around that. Most importantly, get fitted. The lofts on off-the-rack clubs usually aren't as stated. Good luck!

I dont have a 2H or 3H right now not to mention my 3W is old and probably could use replacement.  I would probably use the 2H for the par 5's even the 3H.  I'm just not comfortable hitting my 3W off the deck but I suppose I could hit it off the tee?

I just didnt want to buy a 2H 3H 3W and Driver this summer... (been planning on getting driver anyways)

Okay, I think I understand. IMO, you may have slotted in one too many clubs. Based on what you've said (not being comfortable hitting 3w off the deck), I'm going to assume getting the ball up is a problem once in a while, so hybrids may be the better option. If your driver was, say, 10.5* (correct me if I'm wrong), that would mean you would have five clubs covering a range of roughly ten degrees, which is overkill. Like I mentioned before, I would make your selections based on lofts and not get caught up in labels--one company might make a 20* 3h and another a 21* 4h. Also keep in mind the similarities between a 3w/2h (~15-16*) and a 5w/3h (~19-20*). A good setup might be:

10.5* (Driver)

16* (2h)

19* (3h)

23* (4h or 5h, depending on the company)

Of course, you would need to take into account the loft of your 5i as well to get the proper gaps. This solution eliminates the 3w problem and replaces it with a 2h of comparable loft (which you could potentially hit off the deck) and has one less club that what you listed in your original post. If you insisted, you could also get a strong 3w (13* or so) and use it as a second driver, but that might be unnecessary if you can hit your 4h 220 yards.

This is exactly what I was looking for! thanks! my 4H is 22*

I think i'm going to toss my 3W

Go for Driver (which is 10.5* currently but when I get fitted it could change something more or less)

2H

3H

4H(which I probably wont replace right now.. I can hit it fine)

5i-9i

PW

GW

SW

Putter

That still leaves me with 13, so I suppose I can probably keep the 3W still in the bag lol.

I hope me having a 2H and 3H same type wont hinder my ability to strike my 4H (probably going to be a different brand lol)

Depending on what the lofts and shaft lengths of the hybrids you get are you might consider dropping one (3 maybe?)

That way you could keep the 4i or add a wedge if you wanted to.

As an example here is my bag....

D 10.5

4W 16.5

2H 19

4H 22

5-GW etc ...

This gives me fairly even spacing between all my clubs (10 or so meters) with not a lot of over lap....

FYI - My 4W, 2H and 4H are all different brands hence the differences

Ultimately its how far you hit each club and how comfortable you are that will determine what to put in you bag...

Oh and don't dismiss your current 4H just cause you haven't been fitted for it.... I hit mine the best out most of my clubs and its one of two I haven't been fitted for!

Yeah I like the idea of D 2H 3H 4H 5i-9i PW GW SW Putter

I'll probably keep my 3W in my bag till I can figure out if I want to upgrade it or possibly throw in another wedge (maybea  60?) who knows lol

I keep my 4i outa my bag, I don't like it plus I'm way more confident with my 4H

I have:

Driver - 9.5

3 Wood - 13.5

2h - 17.5

3i - 9i (standard mizuno mp lofts)

PW 47

GW 52

SW 56

I did the horrible geek work to be sure that my distance spread is about perfect for my golf and I know exactly what yardage I should carry with each club, these numbers aren't huge I'm not a huge hitter but generally speaking I know the club I want and I don't have any gap > 15 yds through my bag if I'm hitting the ball properly with each club.

The reason I hit long irons over hybrids is that the ball stops better on the green I play with a long iron, we have 2 par 3's in the 185-195 yard range, I would need to take a different strategy on those holes with a hybrid because I couldn't land on the green and stop which I can with a 4 or 3 iron.

My 3W is my goto club whenever the green is out of range, or if I'm hitting my driver badly. I switched from a 15* to 13.5* 3 wood and it was pretty much the best thing I ever did.

For me my hybrid's main job is to play the long game from a tricky lie especially if I need to work the ball right to left.

Taylormade Burner Superfast TP 2010 9.5 - Matrix Ozik HD6 Stiff 44.5" (0.5" tipped, 1.5" butt trimmed reweighted D1)

Cleveland Launcher DST 2hy 18* - Ultralite Diamana Red 74 Stiff 40.5"

Titleist Vokey Spin Milled GW 52/8*
Titleist Vokey Spin Milled SW 56/14*
Spalding TPM-4 Putter (circa 1988)

Interesting, I took my 4I out for my 4H because I just can't hit it as well or confidently.  I like irons because they are slightly more accurate then hybrids but its negligble for me right now so I'll stick with my Hybrids... not to mention mine land pretty soft since I get them up so high lol.

So you feel like having a 3W would greatly benefit my game even if I had a 2H? (like you)

For me a 3w is a real confidence club, I can't say for sure that it will be for you. I wouldn't be without it, as it comes into play so much both the way I play and the course I play for instance:

- any time I hit a bad drive, hit provisional with 3w.

- any time I address the ball with a driver and don't feel confident :)

- any time I have a need to hit over 220 from a fairway which comes into play various places on my main course due to the need to lay up some drives and some medium distance par 5's.

- any time I really need to keep the ball low because of wind (because a 3 wood is easier to choke and punch straight where a hybrid will often draw too much when choked down and punched).

- any time I'm driving down wind as it will carry the same or further for less risk.

- any time I want more of a draw bias off the tee as my driver is fade biased (which I like) and my natural shot is a mild draw.

If you get into a situation often where you have either an out-of-reach green or a very tight line off a drive then a 3 wood is a good club to have in the bag. If as you say you hit it quite high (as I also do) then a strong lofted 3 wood is a good option providing you have confidence with the club. Logically it makes a very even distance progression through the bag right up to driver, where based on actual averages (taken in geek mode on the practice ground with GPS) my distances (carry + roll in average aka soft conditions) are 240+, 228, 211, 196, 183, 169, 158, 143, 130, 119, 104, 91, 78, I'm not going to claim epic distance I hit average to long based on where I play, I'm far more interested in consistent distance than smashing it.

Doing this work to figure out the no bragging, average distances with a normal easy swing on each club is helping my game more than anything else the actual clubs in the bag is a secondary point. Since I did this work my handicap is steadily trickling down and I'm winning things.

Here's mine:

Driver (getting a fitting this week to possibly replace this with a new driver)

3-wood 15* (use off the tee and very rarely off the deck)

3-H 20* (my hybrids are my oldest clubs in the bag and I still love them)

4-H 23*

5, 7, 8, 9 irons (bought 7-PW and checked yardages and added the 5 and GW later)

PW 46*

GW 50*

SW 54.09

LW 60.05

I'm not carrying a 6-iron and through four rounds, I have not missed it. I have room for one more club but cannot think of anything I need. Maybe I'll leave a space for an old club in case I ever play in the desert.

I love my hybrids and would not consider replacing them with irons even though my game is "good enough" to hit a long iron. I do hit hybrids a little high off the tee so I like a 3-wood option instead of a 2-hybrid. Plus, my hybrids are old and have special shafts in them so matching a 2-hybrid to the others would be very hard.
