Looking at purchasing a new FT-IQ driver with the recent decrease in prices on them.  Granted a couple years old, but I really like the square head drivers.

I have a question regarding available shafts.

My driver swing speed is roughly 81-84 mph.  I had an r9 10.5* with reg flex stock Aldila Re-Ax shaft and could never seem to load the club.   All low liners.  After reading up on Aldila's site it says their regular shafts require 90mph+ swings which I don't have.

So then I tried a Nickent 4dx 12.5* with UST V2 Prolaunch HL senior flex.  I really prefer the senior flex shaft.

With that in mind the FT-IQ comes with your choice of either the Fujikura ZCOM, Aldila Voodoo 60 or the Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki (all in senior flex).  I am having trouble, being these are older shafts, finding good information on them.

Which one would be better for a slower tempo swing and to get the ball flight higher?  Also were any of these shafts more high end than any of the others (i.e. did one sell for $50 vs $100, etc.)

Also with my slower swing would the 11* or 13* be the better option for me?  With the Nickent I tend to carry the ball maybe 220 at best, a little longer with roll on a dry day.

Thanks for any help provided.

As far as stock options, I've only swung the FT-IQ with the Rayon Fubuki 60 shaft in an R flex, and it was the flexiest, weakest shaft I've ever hit.  That R flex could certainly work as a senior flex on its own.  I ended up doing the I-Mix FT-IQ, going with the Fubuki Tour 63 shafts in R and S flex.  Now those are really good shafts.  The Zcom and Voodoo are likely stouter than the stock Fubuki, but I can't give any specific advice as I haven't hit those shafts.

Thanks for the info.  I swung a used FT-IQ yesterday that had a Fubuki 60 in reg flex.  The downside was I couldnt get any lift because it was only a 10* so I was only hitting it about 170 yards which is 30 behind my 5w.  I am looking to buy the 13* version.    I just wonder now if I should go with the Senior or Reg flex version since you said the Fubuki 60 reg is fairly whippy.

I wish I could find the swing specs from Mitsubishi, but they don't have any info on their site for older model shafts.

Does anybody know the specs on the Mitsubishi Bassara 43 shaft (lite flex) that the FT-IQ came with?

Found a good deal on ebay but i don't know much about that particular shaft.

Thanks

Ended up taking your advice and went with the reg flex Fubuki 60.  My current Nickent senior flex is very whippy and I am concerned its causing me some loss in accuracy.  My r9's reg flex was so rigid that I could hit it somewhat straight but everything went low.  So today put in a bid on a 13* FT-IQ Reg flex.  Figure the 13* should get the ball up for me and the reg flex and sq head keep me a little more accurate than the senior.   Ended up winning an ebay auction off Rockbottom's store, brand new for $66 plus shipping.  Couldn't pass it up.  For that price if the shaft doesn't work out I can afford to pick up one that does.

  • 6 months later...

Erock, I seem to have maxed out my PMs for the day so I thought I would respond.  I do hope you see this...

I got the Project X 5.0 regular shaft which evidently has a low flight.  We will see how that works with the clubhead since I tend to go high.

As for waiting for the FT-iQ, I thought about that too.  I originally panicked when I realized my bidding mistake, but the more research I did, the more impressed I was with the IZ.  I do, however, want to try the more closed face of the IQ to see if ti helps me stay in the fairway even at the loss of distance.  Hopefully, I can get both.

I'm too new to this to have a (real) handicap, but hope that changes soon.

thanks again for your input.

Got it....i didn't know Rifle even made driver shafts.  Good luck and let me know how it works out.

No problem on the help.  I am kind of a nut when it comes to trying things so I was just happy to provide you some feedback on what I found out.
