Early this year I'd played a few rounds in March and was hitting the ball fine. Looking forward to having an even better year this year. Out of the blue I came down with the worst case of the shanks I've ever seen...let alone had to deal with. I've been through this for an hour or so before...but always was able to self-correct. Not this time. The rest of my game was fine. Driving, fairway woods, chips, flops...etc. But when it came to taking a full swing, especially in the fairway...right off the hosel every time. I was seriously losing my love for the game and dreading going to the course. I took a few lessons and a few minor flaws were spotted and improved...but no relief for the shanking. My vision isn't great. I'm required to wear glasses to drive...but everyday activities...I'm ok on. I can tell if I land the ball on the green...but really struggle seeing the ball on a green from 165ish  and further. Now the fix. My swing "felt" perfect. Tempo, balance, follow through, and finish on practice swings...but no matter what I'd shank. So at the range last week, I said to hell with it and started swinging at the air next to the ball, focussing about an inch and a half closer to me. Lo and behold I'm striking it pure and with the few tweaks the instructor gave me...better than ever. One of my buddies tells me I just need to play with my glasses on...but that didn't help at all. I'm seeing the ball fine...something about my downswing is taking my swing path more outside. WHATEVER. I'm hitting it pure now and I'm getting more comfortable with this (it is SO uncomfortable not looking at the back of the ball on the downswing). I'm thinking that the worst that could happen is one day my swing gravitates back to what it technically "should" be and I'll begin to hit off the toe. I guess I'll jump off that bridge if/when that happens. I know what my teacher will say when she hears what I'm doing...but when I hit..the proof is there. So how crazy is this? For the time being I have to stick with this because it's the only way I'm enjoying the game. And I'm starting to score well again. I went from mid to high 70s last summer to barely breaking 100, and losing about 6 balls a round. I know as soon as I get my confidence back I'll be in the 70s again.

I've had the shanks before. I placed the ball between two tees and focused on only hitting the ball without moving the tees.

Fixed within 5 minutes.

Shanks are horrible

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
