that Nike signed that dog murdering, dog abusing Michael Vick to a new deal. Because of this I will get rid of all my Nike clothing, running shoes and sell my Sasquatch bag. I urge any one who loves animals, and/or at least respects animals to boycott Nike from now on.

no really, have a more serious knee-jerk reaction. i have pets, have always had pets, never abused my pets. will i boycott a company because one man they're affiliated with is a f**kup? no. did all women stop wearing nike b/c nike sponsors tiger? hmm. no. ludicrous thread started by a vick hater (i'm not a vick lover, in fact i'm indifferent)...but then those are my assumptions. this is a golf forum. as in, golf, white ball with a club. post vick-hating threads and nike-boycott threads on subject sites. comon man.

This guy is more than a F*up. He murdered and abused dogs. Period. Completely different than cheating on your wife. You having pets should have common sense. You should not even have pets with your thinking then. This is not a Vick hating thread. This is a monster hating thread and he has no place in society.

Vick went to jail, had his signing bonus taken away and followed the courts orders since being released, it's time put it in the past and let him move on with his career and life.  What he did was horrible, and as a dog owner I can understand your passion, but he's not a threat to society and the courts have made it so he can't own a dog.   Preventing him from earning a living not only impacts him, but his wife and kids.

I'll be holding on to my Sasquatch bag, as I understand the way business works, and Nike is trying to capitalize on Vicks performance last year in hopes he does the same this year.  It's a bit of a gamble both financially and PR wise, but we'll see if it pays off.

...then why post it in a golf forum? i shouldn't have pets...hmm. i'm not starting a fight with you via TST. i didn't deny nor make reference that he DIDN'T kill dogs. i have common sense, therefore i can seperate things...such as the clothing i'm wearing, which btw is golf apparel, has nothing to do with michael vick. if a guy ona golf course sees me wearing nike, he's not gonna think less of me or think that i am an animal hater or abuser simply for wearing nike. that my friend is the complete lacking of COMMON SENSE.

Personally, I couldn't care less that Nike re-signed Vick. His off-the-field stuff has nothing to do with the fact that I like their hats and shorts. While I don't condone what he did, it's not enough to get me to stop buying Nike products. Clearly, this is an important issue to Alohaed, but I think it's ridiculous to call on everyone else to boycott Nike. Such is the hypersensitive world that we live in today. No one can do or say anything without offending someone. Pretty soon, a reporter will ask a celebrity, say, Tiger, if he prefers Coke or Pepsi. If he responds that he prefers Coke, Pepsi's special-interest group will demand a public apology.

He did some very messed up things, no doubt, but he also did his time.  It's time to move on; Nike signed him because he is an amazing athlete and I think it would be ludicrous to boycott them because of it.

He went to jail, served his sentence, lost his job, lost millions of dollars, and has since actually done good things such as helping kids and animal groups since he got out of jail. That's a whole hell of a lot better than most criminals. So, no, I won't be getting rid of any of my Nike gear because they are now paying money to Michael Vick.

Nike has been, and always will be, about the $$$$$$$$$$.  Any publicity is good publicity for them. I don't care what Tiger, Wie, Vick or the rest of Nike's stable of celebrities wear.  If people buy overpriced apparel based on what someone else wears, I guess that's their privilege.

Boycotting Nike over this is nonsense. First, signing Vick makes perfect sense. He has a pretty sizable fan base. He's an exciting footballer to watch. I guess I should clarify here that I'm not an Eagles fan[1]. In any case, he will probably do a great job of promoting the Nike brand to a wide audience. Second, the hate against Vick seems to imply that he's remorseless. As though he got out of jail and said "oh, that was the penalty for animal cruelty? Cool, I can return to football." He's done far more than required by the terms of his release to promote animal rights, and I wonder, when all is said and done, if his life will have been a net positive for dogs (and animals in general), despite the fairly sizable hole this quantity was in when he went to jail. Third, I don't always judge a company by their endorsers. One of the Adams Golf pro staff said something unbelievably prejudiced - as in, I can't believe someone said that in the 21st century - to the press about a year or so ago, and I still suggest their clubs to various people (I still think the A7 is one of the best starter sets, even if it isn't marketed that way). I'm pretty sure he's still on their staff. I'm not saying to not judge a company by their marketing and endorsements. I'm usually watching when a company decides to discontinue a sponsorship (as opposed to not renewing) in a big way to see where their moral barometer is. I'm not the only one -- there was a thing a few years ago when public favorable perception of Kellogg's dropped when they let Michael Phelps go. --- [1] I have no ties to Philly, and they have only one player on their team that my non-football opinion is "strongly like" (DeSean Jackson). That having been said, they're probably closer to "like" than "dislike" on the spectrum. They're also responsible for one of my favorite plays in the 21st century, but that's another story and doesn't involve Vick.

I'm not  a fan of Nike anyway, so I can jump on the boycott with no regrets.  Don't like Vick either.  He may have paid his "debt to society" but I don't think he can ever pay back the debt he owes those poor animals.  There is something seriously twisted in the mind of anyone who can do something so despicable.

This is a good point. To the OP: Did you have the urge to botcott Nike when the Tiger thing happened? People deserve a second chance.

To the OP, what could Vick do to earn your forgiveness....?  As an owner of a dog, I realize this was a vile way to behave.  But I also know that he has lost a lot and basically hit rock bottom.  So, basically, let's see if his remorse is truthful now that the endorsements are coming back.

    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
    • True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.
    • I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
