I know choice of shafts are personal but I just wanted to get a general comment about these two brands.

Your preference, advantages, reason and all other insights.

Also does 5.5 in Precision = Stiff Flex in True Temper?
What is the main difference between Project X and Rifle shafts?

Following are the products:
1. Royal Precision Project X Flighted
2. Royal Precision Project X
3. Royal Precision Rifle Irons
4. Royal Precision Tour Flighted Rifle Irons
5. True Temper Black Gold
6. True Temper Dynamic Gold
7. True Temper Dynamic Gold w/Sensicore

I have tested project x, just to stiff a tip for me?, I think tour flighted rifle is a great shaft. Dynamic Gold is a fine shaft of course time tested, but the rifle gives a little more help to those with slower swing speeds. The 5.0 is probably reqular in Project rifle shafts. But since the flex determination is made using a different method (I believe) it is hard to make direct comparisons. I think Gas Can addressed this in an old thead, comparing butt stiff with a soft tip versus soft butt with a stiff tip, and stiff stiff (project x?)

Thanks for the reply Allin. How about the Black Golds? Do you know if they absorb vibration like the sensicores? Also, precision rifles claim that they reduce vibration as well but is it true? Thanks.

hypergolf,

allin pretty much nailed the summary. Project X is very stiff in the butt section, and semi stiff in the tip (stiffer than rifles but softer than dynamic gold). This creates a shaft that's softer in the midsection which helps create a high initial launch but a flat, low-spin ball flight. It's also worth noting here that the new Project X's from True Temper will not longer have the brushed finish, only a standard chrome one. Project X Flighted is the same, but the long irons are softstepped helping them produce a higher trajectory for players who have issues elevating their long irons. Flighted Rifles are stiff in the butt (although not as stiff as Project x) and the softest in the tip of all the shafts you've mentioned. Again, flighting is softstepping the long irons to produce a higher trajectory. Standard Rifles have consistent flex profiles throughout the set(i.e. no softstepping). Dynamic Gold is the stiffest in the tip and midesction and softest in the butt. It's the most popular shaft in golf, but is not a good fit for most players, especially in the long irons. They produce a low overall trajectory but a spin rate that's slightly higher than Project x. Sensicore is simply a vibration absorbing insert. The only difference is it adds a couple of grams to the overall shaft weight and moves the balance point higher. Black Gold is another animal entirely. Before True Temper bought out Royal Precision, they introduced Black Gold. My rep swears that it is meant to counter rifle, but I firmly believe it is intended to be an alternative to Project X. Project X is so stiff in the butt that some players (usually with very smooth tempos) feel it is boardy and harsh. Black Gold profiles almost identically to Project X, but significantly softer in the butt section, a better fit for smoother swingers. I will say that I have found Black Gold to be significantly sensitive to installation. I have had customers do a simple taper tip glue job and come out with widely varying flex profiles throughout a set. This is one shaft I would take to your a reputable clubmaker before installing. As far as flexes go, they don't translate well from one to another due to their different bend profiles. However, I will make a widely sweeping generalization which you should use only as a starting point in the fitting process. Were someone to come to me who used to play "stiff shafts" Dynamic Gold S 300 = 5.8 on the rifle scale Rifle - Harstepped 5.5 or softstepped 6.0 Project X - 5.5 Black Gold - Softstepped S3 Due to their different bend profiles, all shafts have different vibration qualities. I wouldn't say that black golds or rifles dampen vibration any less than dynamic golds, they simply transmit it differently through the shaft. Much like the different pitches resonated through different sized tuning forks, if that analogy makes any sense. If you must have true vibration dampening to prevent injury or pain, I would go with sensicore at the very least, but a much better choice would be graphite.

Gas_can thank you so much for the detailed info. Helps out for me to choose the correct shaft for my next purchase. Tried MP60 on both dynamic golf and rifle shaft 6.0 and I loved it!!! Dynamic golf did feel harsher though but still performed well. But I think I will try the flighted rifle 6.0 after reading your post. Really curious about the Black Gold too...

One more question. What is the tri-spec shaft that comes as a standard with Titleist 755? Thanks a bunch.

I just noticed you are using Tour Edge 5i - PW. I was at a pro shop yesterday trying different #6 irons and was hitting my Tour Edge Bazooka #6 consistantly 160-170 yards. The Mizuno and the cg4 tour both were averaging 180-190 consistantly. I was wondering what version of Tour Edge you are hitting. I was thinking of trying out the new Tour Edge high end irons.

Still confused about the black gold shafts. Are they similar to Project X Flighted or regular Project X? Trying to get a new set of MP-60 with either black gold or rifle flighted.. Which is a better fit?

Anyone can help me with the above quote?

Wanted to find out if Black Gold are similar to Project X or Project X Flighted? I hear that Black Gold also has high launch... Is this true? According to their website it should be low launch...

Drawing from what Gas_Can said. . .

Choose Black Gold if you have a smooth tempo - a swinger more than a hitter.

Choose Project X if you have a fast tempo - a hitter more than a swinger.

Choose Project X Flighted if you have difficulty getting the long irons in the air high enough to stop nicely on the green.

Also, based on GasCan's experience, If choosing Black Gold, I would make sure they were done by the Manufacturer or reputable club maker.

Good Luck!

I have the 755s with the tri-spec regular shafts.

Mr. Sparkle, I'm going to demo for a second time and possibly get fit for the 755's. I will have them built with Project X Flighted. How have they worked for you so far?

I have another shaft question. Has anyone had any experience with the new TT GS-75 shaft. I have read it proclaimed as the longest steel shaft in golf! I am wanting to reshaft a set of Mizuno MP-32s and am looking for advice.

harry,

It's a very lightweight shaft, but it's very stable and stands up to even hard swings. It's a great alternative for senior swingers who can't stand the graphite feel or for slower swingers who want more clubhead speed or a higher ball flight. The M80 in the Tour Concept program is a slightly higher quality shaft overall and hits a shade lower, but is in the same general category. With that said, if you're looking for something to both raise your ballflight and help increase swing speed, I think a shaft like Dynalite Gold SL would be a better bet as a 75g shaft can wreak major havoc on an average golfer's tempo with their irons.

Hey all, I'm looking to reshaft my NS Pro 950GH (Reg) MP-60 soon because they feel too soft and unresponsive enough for my swing (95mph), thus I can't get the ball accuracy right.

I'm thinking of Project X 5.5 or 6.0, Black Gold, and TT Tour Concept S3. I've tried my friend's MP-67 with TT TC-S3 a week ago at the range and boy did they feel amazing. Due to heavier and more responsive shaft, all my shots go straight at where I was aiming. No more left-right-left-right kind of thing. Anyway, I'm still yet need to know how would PX and BG stand against TT Tour Concept. Anyone has insights that can help me to decide?

P.S: By the way, Mizuno rep said that the MP series are originally designed to be "flighted" with their club heads, therefore installing flighted shafts such as TT Tour Concept may mess up the trajectories ie. long irons fly way higher and low irons fly way lower than intended. That's why you don't see PX Flighted as an option in their custom department. They're going to remove Rifle Flighted soon.
