What has been your best golf equipment purchase in the last 5 years? By best I mean the one that improved your game the most. For me, I'd say my TaylorMade Rescue Dual utility club. I can hit it from the rough, fairway, tee box. I love that club.

A 48 degree Cleveland wedge. I love the versatility around the greens, and the ability to control the spin. It works far better than the pitching wedge that came with my set.

Attack/gap wedge (52*). I don't know why whenever I use one term (in person), someone corrects me to the other.

When I hit it right - and that's most of the time, for just this club. Odd, since I bought it used, and my "measured"/fit irons don't have this property. But when I hit it I tend to hit the green. I guess I should add that if I hit it smartly, too - I can't tee off with it on a par-5 and hit the green :)

The best purchase I've made in a while remains my Cobra 23 degree Baffler. It is easy to hit from almost any lie and, from time to time, with some luck, I can shape a shot with it.

I am so glad to hear that. I've yet to put mine into play, as I got it by returning my previous hybrid (wrong shaft, thank goodness for return policy). Will put into play twice this weekend. I might have to change my answer :)

I have to say my 13 degree Callway fairway wood. I have been playing without a driver for almost half a year now (Driver story in the Golfdigest Thread) but still doing fine from the tee and on the fairway. Really like the smaller head. I hit it really long (220-230 meters which I couldn't do even with my previous driver) but I can't wait till I get my FT5 Tour in about 2 weeks.

My Cobra 440SZ Driver...I continue to be tempted by the new stuff, and likely will have to replace it this year, but I have had so much confidence swinging this cobra that Driving went from something I sweated on every tee, to being a club I don't even practise that much...it just keeps going down the middle!

I'm thinking that I may have just bought it today. If the work I did in the simulator is any indication, my best purchase is my brand new Tour Edge Exotics 16° Hybrid. I'll know more on Thursday when the range at my course finally opens and I get to hit a ball farther than 10 feet with it. At the moment all I can do is compare the differences with it and the other 2 clubs I tried in the simulator, and The Tour Edge won hands down. I hit it an average of 40-50 yard farther, and straighter than the others. And it just felt better, a key factor in any club I buy.

4 buckets of balls at the driving range in the last 2 weeks! Massive improvement in my accuracy.

other than that, I am hoping it will be my Vokey wedge to give me more control round the green. I always lacked control round the green and always resorted to a bump & run with a 8/9 iron. Hoping this wedge will give more bite on delicate shots. Will be able to confirm after my 1st round with it on Sunday!

Hmm, last 5 years? All I have to say is Todd Hamilton 04 Open @ Troon. He showed us the amazing versatility of the MD that week (I remember buying one shortly after). So, I'd have to say my Sonartec MD hybrid has helped my game the most , mainly with playability from fairways and rough as opposed to a 2I. But my 906F2 has to be my favorite purchase. I'm totally in love with the club, everything about it is just perfect. It hasn't really helped my game, I hit it about the same maybe just a bit higher than my old PT but I just love the looks of the 906 (give me a 906 w/ the PT sound and you'd have a perfect club). I may change my mind though, I've been borrowing an FT-5 and so far I'm loving it! My neighbor is going to have to fight me for it! hehe.

The Mizuno MX 23's. The confidence they instill and the forgivness built into the irons have helped me lower my handicap by at least 5-7 strokes.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
