Thinking about adding a 60 degree LW but not sure if I should stay with what i've got or take out say, the 3 iron. Also undecided about a hybrid or 5 Wood. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

I carry the 53* and 60* degree wedges, they fill the yardage gaps in my irons most effectively. 56* & 60* would be too big a gap between Pitching and and Sand wedges, and 51* & 56* keeps the 60* out of my bag which I find extremely useful personally.

At your handicap, it shouldn't be an issue to hit it (Lob), but if you're not comfortable over it, you could lose some strokes with it. All about what feels good to the individual

So should I add a 60 deg wedge? Do you guys carry a 60 degree?

I carry 46-52-58 degree wedges. I haven't had a problem hitting 60* wedges, I just ended up with the 58*. What are you taking out to put it in the bag?

Yeah, I guess I was considering taking out the 3 iron. Maybe the hybrid but more likely the 3 iron. But if I did that I'd end up with 4 wedges. The PW with the TA5 is 45*, then I'd have 51, 56 and 60.

Maybe change the lofts to a 53 and 58 or something like that as someone else suggested.

I picked up a 56 recently, so I now have a regular PW and 50, 56 and a 60... I do not have a 5 wood but I did pick up a hybrid 3 iron because my iron set is 4-pw...

How has that worked out for you? On paper it looks thin on the longer shots but then again how many times does one use a 3 iron? That's pretty much what I'm contemplating except I'd just keep the 2i 19 deg hybrid and go with 4-PW after that.

I will let you know as soon as I use them!

We are still a couple of months away from playing here in NB... My reasoning for the hybrid was that I need a club that I can hit to a green from 180-200 yards. I can hit my 4 and 5 irons that far if I want, but my control is pretty sketchy... I tried out the hybrids and I found that I could take a nice easy swing and hit a good distance with a really nice trajectory... I am hoping to hold a few more greens on those longer shots this year... As for the 56 I need a club that I can hit 60-70 yards on a full swing. My 50 is a good 100 yard club and I can not hit my 60 very far at all, I just use it from the sand... So I picked up a nice 56 with some offset, I have not even hit it yet, but I am confident I can use it from that distance...

Keep in mind that when Lee Trevino said: "Even God can't hit a 1-iron", he was talking about a club with exactly the same loft as a current 3-iron.

I would most definitely take the 3-iron out. As far as what to replace it with, just take a look at which one of your clubs shows the most wear. I'm guessin' it's a wedge. If you're current PW is 45, wow, that's about the strongest I've ever seen. You need a gap wedge, which you have, to bridge between the PW and the SW. I would really recommend the 60. It well come in very handy. You will, however, absolutely need to practice with it. Otherwise, the phrases "chili-dip" and "skull" will quickly become part of your normal vocabulary.

I also replaced my 5-wood with a utility, and it was the right move for me. I hit it just as far, it's more forgiving, and generally a more solid club.

My set: driver, 3, utility, 4-9, four wedges (48, 52, 56, 60).

Ymmv!

The setup I have, which I would only consider one change for is:

Driver / 3 Wood (15) / 5 Wood (19)
4-PW (PW is 46 degrees)
Wedges: 50 / 54 / 58
Putter

I absolutely love this setup, that being said, I could change my 5 wood for a 3 Hybrid, but it's not a necessity.

I think you guys have convinced me to pull the 3 iron and add a 60 degree wedge. Other than a couple week stretch at the end of last summer (I have no idea what was up) I have never really hit a 3 iron well and have even shied away from using it in the past. While I like some of the configurations you guys have it seems with the PW loft I have now adding a 60 would make sense. 45, 51, 56, 60. I love the golf chat, thanks guys!

I have had this dilemna also....
It really depends if you are a long hitter or not....ie do you tend to need to hit lots of long shots on your approach shots...if so I would stick with either a 5 wood, hybrid 20 or 3 irons depending on your preference and eliminate the lob wedge....I generally use my lob on chip shots around the green but rarely for full approach shots....

I'm the same way. I never use a full lob or sand wedge, partly because I'm a shorter hitter. However, I do like the things I can do with the lob that I can't do with my other clubs.

I took my 3HL out, and added a Halo 22º Hybrid. I could probably take my 4HL out as well. The 21º is between the 3 & 4, so i could probably make due with the one club. Even though you shouldn't have more than 4º between wedges, i have no problem with a 47ºPW - 54ºSW - and 60ºLW. If i drop the 4HL, i'll go with a 50º as well. Sorry to ramble, but i definately like the 60º. I use it quite a bit.

All very good points and posts. I do think I run the risk of being thin with the longer clubs. I'm definitely not a "long" hitter but I don't think I'd consider myself short either. But I play a variety of courses and thinking back I can't recall too many times I have used the 3 iron. Yeah, I've certainly used it but sometimes I even use the hybrid or 4 iron instead. I guess in the end I tend to view wedges as scoring clubs. I guess I miss too many greens and feel I need a good short game to score I think I'm going to try pulling the 3 iron in favor of a 60 degree and play with that group and see if I end up in trouble on the long shots. I'm going to add the Cleveland CG 10. We'll see.... only if this damn snow would melt!

I'd lose the 3 iron and get the Halo 5i. I'm more consistent with the 5i and the trajectory is higher. I used to carry a 60" as a luxury, but I found myself using my SW more and more with the 60" collecting dust...
