Making High school golf team

hi i'm new to this forum so don't expect much. i'm turning 15 in a couple weeks and my golf tryouts are on wednsday and thursday. i'm wondering what to expect on what they're looking for. i usually shoot 80s.

They are looking for someone who can score well, has good etiquette, and is honest. Just go out and focus on your game. Don't worry about what anybody else is shooting. Be courteous and play well.  Good luck.

Believe me, at least give it a try. At 15 shooting in the 80's, you will probably be better than most kids your age. I STILL kick myself 30 years after graduating HS for not going out for the team. It turned out I would have probably been amongst the top players on the team. I was probably shooting around 81 average with the odd 76 or 84. Especially in Senior year I started to pay attention to the scores being shot. Usually 9 hole matches (stroke) after school for normal matches vs. another school, with 18 hole matches (also stroke) for the larger multiple school tourny's. 9 hole scores for the winners were 42 or 43, with the odd 39 tossed in. 18 hole scores would be in the 82-85 range. Easily within my range to at least help the team score some points. Unfortunately, that was before the era of Tiger and Parents getting their kids out there at 3 years old. There are probably quite a few 14 yo in the country who can shoot under par, but their probably not enjoying it if they are told they need to play better if they want to 'get on tour'. Do yourself a favor and talk to the Coach before the tryouts and ask what they are looking for. If you are sincere and want to give the effort you could make an impression on him. But the advantage to trying out and possibly making the team, is that if you make it, you will get practice time and play with others who WAN'T you to get better. Along with some coaching that could be invaluable. And it's probably a bit cheaper than paying for lessons!

Go out for the team. You'll be fine. At my high school the highest score that made the team was 297 in a 56-hole qualifier. He was the last of the 12 who made the team. Then they kept 5 on the practice squad who practice with the team but will never play in a match. Last year our varsity team scores were usually right around 37, 38, 41, 42, 42, 43 for 9 holes. In Ohio's D1 Sectional Tournament our team went 78, 78, 81, 82, 83. It was play 5, count 4 and we advanced on the 5th-man scorecard. Par was 72.

This year we don't have anyone who will give par a run, but we all shoot right around 40/40 with the occassional 38 or 39 to cancel out the 41 or 42. 80's are golden. Get four 80's in our Sectional and District Tournaments and you'll probably be moving on. This is NE Ohio.

thanks guys yryouts are in 13 hours and a talked to the coach and he said that hes looking for the most well rounded players meaning good grades ( iv only gotten 1 c ever) good at golf obviously, and good etiquette.

I shot +3 and +4 for 9 holes during tryouts when I was a junior and didnt make the team.  I tried out again senior year, +4 both days, didnt make the team.  Unfortunately the team was that good, if i had been attending any other school in the area I would have been on the team because they all stunk.  Still bitter, lol.

Congrats.  Work at it, get stronger, and practice chipping and putting.  I'm jealous:  when I was in high school, I played golf 6 days a week.  Now I'm lucky to play once.

Competitive golf is so much fun, and I only played in an league with guys twice my age. High school golf must be great, especially if you are in contention.

First time I ever played on a golf course was when I tried out for my high school team, I made the team because they needed to me to actually compete, i was the 6th and last team member. I was the bottom man and was horrible back then, I would have been lucky to shoot a 55 in 9 holes back then. My senior year (second year on the team) I improved but was still pretty bad, but so was the rest of the team. I don't think we won many matches in the 2 years I was there, but it was a blast win or lose. I wish I would have continued golfing straight out of high school but I took 9 years off before I really got into golf and started to take it seriously. I played a few times a year but nothing like I play now.

That's awesome kid. Enjoy the time you spend out on the course as a kid. Keep working, and you never know where the game can take you. Congrats again!
