I just got the new Srixon Q star golf balls and I figured I'd do a quick review on them.

The Q star is a 2 piece design engineered to perform like a tour ball for slower swingers. The Q star is made of the following:

Core: Highly resilient rabalon.

Cover: Pana-tetra thin cover.

I picked this ball up at Dicks Sporting Goods for 24.99. The ball was scheduled to be released the next day, but the guy was nice enough to sell them to me a day ahead. The Q star incorporates the Srixon STAR performance. Spin, Trajectory, Acceleration, and Responsiveness. The only difference between the popular Z star is the Q star is designed for people 10 handicap and above or swing speeds less than 100. This ball is supposed to generate the right amount of spin for slower swing speeds. As you may see in the commercial for this ball If you are a slower swinger and you play a tour ball you may generate to much sidespin causing you to hit the ball everywhere.

Distance:

Off the tee with the Q star I noticed I consistently gained 5-7 yards off the tee. The ball is soft and durable. I found I could compress this ball well and gained lots of confidence over the round.

Spin/Feel:

When I first purchased the ball I went to the dicks sporting goods chipping green and chipped a few. Immediately I noticed more check and control. That carried over to the course the next day. I was amazed how much spin and control the ball had even though it was two piece. Wedge shots on hop and stop and on a few spin back. Long irons are two hops and stop. The ball is soft and very easy to control.

Putting:

Off the putter the Q star was great. Good feel soft and solid looking. As this being the first Srixon product I've used I found the alignment tool very useful and easy to get used to after using a Bridgestone e6 alignment tool for so long.

Summary:

All and All the Srixon Q star has everything in a ball I could look for. Distance, Spin, Durability, and most importantly Price. 24.99

is tough to beat with such good performance. But this ball is not for everyone. It is a ball for slower swingers and higher handicappers. But now, us higher handicappers have a tour performance ball designed for us! I can now say I switched to Srixon!

I like big putts and I cannot lie.

I have moved all my Pro V's to backup balls in place of the Srixon Z-Star...I honestly think its the best ball out there that no one knows about.  I feel that they are softer than the Pro V's and spin more around the green.  Srixon for as long as I can buy the ball for this golfer.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Srixon makes excellent golf balls.  I picked up some of last year's Z-Stars early on when they were being cleared out at $25/dozen.  I bought a couple dozen of the new Q-Stars at GG last week and really like them as well.  In between I played the Trispeed Tour - another good ball.

WRT the Q-Stars, I'm finding some distance loss of the tee, though that may be due more to my swing being a bit off.  They spin amazingly well on approach shots, though.  On most of my shots today the ball was within a few feet of the pitch mark on the green.  I really like them for putting, as well.  Overall, I think these are the best $25/dozen ball on the market.

Hey...

What is the difference between the Zstar and the Qstar?

I started with the Nike Blue Crush then bought the e6. I hit the Qstar and started seeing 10+ yards longer drives, cleaner more accurate short game hits.

Just curious... :)

Funny, when I went to the Titleist site and did their ball fitting it seemed to emphasize that amatuers will benefit from a better ball and the message I got was that the ProV1 is the best but NXT was available for those who didn;t want to spend the money.

Now Srixon is sending the message that amateurs may be better of playing a lower spin ball and promoting the Q-Star.

The two companies seem to have very different philosophies. In my own expeience, I have played a wide variery of Srixon balls and the Z-Star is awesome.  I define awesome not only by feel and spin, but also by the fact that I never seem to lose them because the ball is going where I want it to.  The Q-Star is next best for me and just is not as soft on very short game work like chips and putts.  The other ball that i played well and almsot never lost is the SF-Lady.  So keep that in mind when you decide if my opinion matters :)

I am a fan of the Q-Stars and they are my everyday ball. I got them figuring that I would no longer have to mark my golf balls since I would be the only one out there with a yellow ball. With Titleist now also making a yellow ball, I may have to pull out that red marker again.

I really dont think it matters as much which ball you play, as long as you stick with the same ball. Consistency off of wedges and the putter is important. I know a lot of people like playing used balls - but there is no way that they are all consistent.

I picked up a box one day because they didn't have anymore B330 RX-s in stock.  They weren't a bad ball, personally I just prefer something a little softer. They seemed a little hard to me, then again I may have been drinking that day? Kidding

The Q star is a very good ball. If looking for a ball in this price range, $25/dozen, be sure to try out some Titleist NXT Tour S balls as well.

Been playing the NXT Tour S and Q star lately. I have been so impressed, I may be saving some money on balls.

I have been playing the Srixon Z-star for a few years. Exceptional ball, but not sure it is worth the extra dough after using these other balls.

Just ordered 2 dozen from Global Golf.  Got them for $21.99 per dozen.  Hope to put them in play this weekend.  This is my first Srixon purchase.  Been playing the Nike PD Soft, but heard good things about Srixon balls and wanted to give them a shot.

Plus 1 to that!

I have been toying with switching from my callaway warbirds, I like them but they are a little hard. I bought some used prov's but are not sure what think of them yet. Been looking seriously at the srixon's, this was the feed back I was looking for.

In the Bag:

 X Driver, 3w & 5w

 Ironwood 4 hybrids

Putter: BigT special

Played a round with the Q-Star today and I have to say for the price this ball performed very well for me.  Still managed to slice a few, but that is me not the ball..  It felt good coming off my driver, woods, and irons, and rolled well on putts and chips.  I even had an 8 iron into the 18th that bounced once and checked up leaving me a nice birdie try.  For $22 per dozen this will be my ball going forward.

Have any of you guys playing the Srixon payed the TopFlite Gamer 2 much?  I am curious as to how you would compare the 2 balls, if you have played both enough to have a valid basis for a comparison.

I play the Gamer but am always open to find an improved fit.  And slow swing speed pretty much Defines my game.  LOL

Thanks.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Id say they are very similar, with the Gamer having the advantage in spin.  That may or may not be a good thing though depending upon your ballflight.

Hello all, just joined up.

I was thinking of using these Q star balls, as they claim to be better for high handicappers, like myself. My question is, I have a fairly fast swing speed, so would I be better off using the z stars.

Obviously the Q star would be preferred option, but do you think that due to the balls being designed for slower swingers, would it be an issue. I have previously used the Wilson Staff DX2, and have found them to be ok, but am considering others.

    • Two things I bring up when it comes to this discussion. One is if you have let's say two towns next to each other, one has a population of 10,000 people and the other has a population of 1,000 people. Let's also say that they never play golf against each other. Only among themselves. In the first town, you have one guy who has won 15 events, then a couple of guys who won 6, a couple who won four and a bunch of people who won three, two and one events. In the second town, you have one guy who won 18 events, then a guy who won 11, a guy who won 9, a guy who won 8, a couple who won 7, a couple who won 3-5 and then a few 2s and a few 1s. Who's the best golfer? It's possible it's the guy who won 18, but it's pretty unlikely. Far more likely to be the guy who won 15 in the much bigger town.  In the same way, I view the fact that there is more parity in the 1990 and onwards world than there was in the pre 1990 world as a plus for Tiger. It's much harder to stand out if the fields are deeper, stronger, better. If there are a handful of players who win all of them, that tends to suggest weakness to me, not strength. The other thing is Ed White. Harvey Penick talked about him in one of his books. Ridiculously good at the game, but no one ever heard of him, because he got a job and didn't play professionally. There was no money in it and he needed security, so he took a job that paid him steadily. No clue how many people there are out there like him, but if he was around today, he'd be playing pro golf for sure. If he had played professionally, Penick sure seemed to think he'd have been one of the best of all time. Fred Haas played him in a college match and got stuffed. 40 years later he walked into Penick's shop and saw Ed White's picture on the wall and, after a full career playing pro golf, he said that Ed White was the best player he ever saw. Those 40 years would presumably have included at least some of Jack. I can see why people might say Jack is the GOAT. I don't agree, but I can at least understand why they say it. IMO there is no argument you can make for anyone other than Tiger to be the BOAT though. At least not yet.
    • A good option is to play the Par 3 courses. after playing an 18 -hole round. The Par 3 courses have 18 holes, we usually played only 9 holes after playing 36 holes on each of the trips we had. You may want to check out Grand National while you're in the middle of Alabama. I enjoyed Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge courses which are a short drive north.
    • In August, I am playing the World Am in Myrtle Beach. I do not know which courses yet, but should be a blast. Aside from that, those are the only golf trip plans, unless I play while on vacation in Destin in June.
    • Even on a perfect center hit I was receiving at most 1.48 smash factor. 10 days ago on the warming up for a round my Driver made a weird sound, I checked the bottom and it was cracked. Don't know for how long it was cracked but at least this time the crack was easy visible. Maybe it was already cracked before but with a more subtle crack?.. don't know. I'm waiting for TaylorMade to approve the warranty and send me a new head. I was using the Stealth Plus, I will take the opportunity and upgrade it to the Qi10 LS paying the difference.  On Sunday with my old Titleist 915 and softer balls I was reaching 1.5, even 1.51 on center hits. Test didn't went well. Only gained 2..3 miles, not worth pursuing. Figured out that with a ball and with a target, my path was way to in to out with this new idea, so in order to move the club in the correct path I needed to slow down to redirect the club on the downswing or aim more to the right, close the face a play a big hook.. not possible. I already play a big draw with Driver, more curvature is unplayable. Yesterday at home, with no ball messed around with a more neutral path, even swinging a little out to in. It felt a lot more in sync with the body. With a big in to out path it feels like my hands are working right, away from the body, when the body is working to rotate to the left. With the path to the left is was easier to apply force thru the hitting zone.  As always tested 10 swings with my current swing (A), and 10 with this little out to in path(B).  The difference was huge, like 12 miles faster with swing (B). I knew something wasn't right. The fact was that the PRGR was aligned more in line with the (B) path so it of course was giving higher speeds. I proceeded to align it with the (A) path and tested again 5 more swings each. Again (B) was faster but only by 5 miles. (Made a tiny experiment moving the PRGR to a more extreme in to out path and the swings register 25/30% slower for both swings, so it wasn't reading properly at that angle) Finally I moved the PRGR in the middle of both paths, and this time (B) won by 9 miles. Off course, this was without a ball and a target so.. I will be hitting the range tomorrow to see the real difference.
