I usually play PRO V1s and Callaway HX TOURs but found a Pinnacle Gold "Distance" ball so decided to use a few holes for today's round (ended up using it for the whole round). The difference in driving yards is amazing!! I was getting an extra 15 yards it seems. It doesn't bite around the green but not too bad considering.

weighing the extra distance plus price, I think i'm in the market for a new ball.

so like the title says: What do you all recommend for a LONG ball that is decent around greens?

I've only played the premium Bridgestone balls (B330 family) But I'd be willing to bet that the E series of balls they have are pretty awesome.

I've been gaming the Bridgestone e5 and I can tell you it's a great ball; long off the tee and surprisingly soft around the green. It's  a true jack of all trades at a very reasonable price.

Happiness is a long walk with a putter.

You might want to check out the Top-Flite D2 feels... should have the distance you are looking for with some bite.

Srixon tour ad333. had gotten a box as a gift. not too shabby. decent distance and kinda soft. plays alot like the bridgestone e6. I chew up pro v's with the quickness so I may be switching as well.

Pro Vs are like snacks for my PW. They start to shred up like they've been hit with a damn cheese grater.

I switched to two different balls now and I'll be loyal for a very long time between the two.

1. Srixon AD-333
2. Callaway HX-Hot Plus

The HX-Hot Plus will give you more "spin/greenside feel" than the AD-333 and equal distance for the most part. The HX is a 3 piece ball and the AD is a 2 piece. The HX is also a bit more costly during regular pricing, but is currently on sale for the same price as the AD-333.

I play distance balls because for the longest time I played soft balls trying to get more touch around the green but I could never get the ball to stop for me even with them and I was losing distance. So now I play distance balls. Maybe when my game gets to the point where stopping balls becomes a chief concern for me ill reconsider but for now I find I score better over a round with a distance ball.

Just got 2 dozen Srixon AD-333's for $25. They play great, but they are so cheap because they are discontinued in favor of the new Q-Star, which is also a great ball. Both are quite long and will hold a green.

The problem is, there is no premium ball that will go farther than the others to seek you the results you want. I will say this, the premium balls with an -X, like Z-star-x, the ones with less spin, will go a bit farther than the others.

if you want a long ball, they are really the cheaper ones. The reason is the cover on the ball. Layers will effect what type of spin is put were, IE, less driver spin, more wedge spin, but most feel is all in the cover. Thats why premium balls have all the same cover material.

If i had to say, if you want a golf ball that is long and soft around the greens, Top Flight V2 Gamer. Its a three piece, so it has good spin around the green, and its pretty long off the tee. Also the taylormade LPD Black, but i don't think those are made anymore. Right now i am playing the Taylormade Penta, i like the feel off the irons, but off the driver its probably average distance compared to other premium balls.

But there is no miracle golf ball. I would find one that works well for your budget. Because a person can easily go through a few dozen golf balls a year, and believe me, it might be the most expensive part of the game if you want to play the expensive golf balls. I tend to wait for new ones to come out and go get them when they get buy1 get 1 free. Like the Z-Stars were like that when the newer version came one. Thats the reason i don't play Pro-V's, they never go on sale like that.

Srixon Q-Star or Bridgestone E5.  Both give good distance but still have a soft enough cover to be pretty spinny balls.

I just switched from Callaway HX Tours to Titliest NXT Tours and am pleasently surprised to be getting an extra 5 to 10 yards (of flight) from my irons. It was so wet here this weekend that there is no way to compare how they feel around the green. Truth is I played some of the best rounds of my life with the old style Pinnacle Golds (not the Distance). You're not going to get them to spin back but I was able to get them to stop and drop on the average public course. I had also recently tried the Srixon Q-Star but like the NXT Tours a little better.

If you are looking to save a few bucks try the Nike PD Long, I got a sleeve for free and tried them out last weekend.  They are a two piece ball, pretty long and really spun well, I hit a 5 iron into the last green and the ball was no more than 2 feet from the divot.

I have to admit that my ball striking is probably not consistent enough where the ball has a huge impact.  With that said, I have been trying to play more with one particular ball to eliminate the impact (if any) of different balls on my consistency.  I have been playing the Gamer V2.  I don't lose any distance and it seems to come of the putter nicer than pure distance balls.  I buy them off ebay for $0.84 to $1.00 per ball so I can't beat the price.  Even at the $1.67 per ball list price, it's not a bad deal.

This weekend, I was 160 yards to the green and hit a GamerV2 with my new Ping G15 27* hybrid. The ball had a nice steady rise and then dropped softly on the green and stopped with one small bounce.  I wish I could do that more often.

Like all the other responses I have to say if you want a ball that gives decent distance off the tee and control off the wedges you're going to have to spring for at least a mid price range ball.  But unlikely you'll find an inexpensive ball that will do both.  The Pinnacle distance ball is a long as any and longer than most but hard and won't spin off any of your clubs.    I like the e5 and just bought some Q-Star balls to try (I like a yellow ball) as I hear they perform well.

I had been playing the Bridgestone balls (330RX and RXS), and recently tried the new TM Penta Balls ($40/Doz).  I get good spin with the TP, seems a little better than the RXS, and I get more distance than the RXS.  Putting the TP had a real good feel to it too.  And after playing the entire round with the TP, it had very limited wear and tear on it even with a bunch of PW-LW strikes.  So far I am sold on them.

I've been playing the Nike Tour D and they seem to give good distance and decent around greens.  Maybe it's just confidence from playing decent a couple times with them, but hey...that is what counts!

thanks for all the tips guys!

I will be doing a bit more research & experimenting w/ the some of the suggestions until I find one that fits my needs.

I'm guessing that the greens I play on are a bit softer/friendlier than average since the pinnacle gold distance doesn't roll tooo much. Plus i tend to hit my approach shots short of the pin so the extra roll actually helps in my case.

Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
