Then track your average score..... One mathematical calculation means no more than another for your purpose.

True. This way I can see how I compare to others though.

Ahhhh, so it means more to you than just a measure of your own improvement.

Then spend the $25 for a valid hcp. Or it means nothing.

David... I recently opened up an indoor golf center in WA and we are going to start our first golf league.  I'm trying to find an spreadsheet that I can use to calculate everyone's handicaps.  This will be the first time I've administered a golf league so I'm learning as I go here.

Any tips or tricks for me?

Great question. Are you going to always be playing the same course, or will it vary week to week?

I'd probably play a stableford and keep a "handicap" off of a rolling 4 or 5 scores. Something like that....?

My plan is to change course each week.  We're running a 10 week league and we'll use the first five weeks' scores to create the handicap. I'm just trying to find a good way to calculate 20-30 handicaps easily and I figured having a spreadsheet that I could quickly plug weekly scores into would help.

I also thought about rotating game types. We have FSG simulators and it can automatically keep scores for all kinds of game types: stroke, stableford, nassau, and a bunch of others.  I thought it would be a fun way to add variety as well.

Sounds like fun!

In order to use the actual hcp calculation, you need the course rating and slope for the courses and tees you're playing. I don't know that those numbers will be accurate for handicapping virtual golf. That's why I'd use stableford. For a 10 week league, I'd probably use a straight average for the first 5 weeks, and then keep a rolling 5 week average thereafter. Not perfect, but it should work pretty well for your intended purpose.

Just my .02 worth.

Hi trist,

I am a soldier in the British forces and am wondering if I can get a copy of that handicap workbook. I'm running a golf society and it would really help as I am writing the society bible (to include games played, handicaps, competitions etc.

If it's ok could you send it to

Does your handicap calculator work for 9-holes?  If so, could you send me a copy.  I am now responsible for calculating handicaps for a small ladies 9-hole league.  Up until now, all handicaps have been calculated manually.  Thanks.

I just added a column with a 1 or 0 for 9 holes and multiply the same formula with the "half" course ratings and the slope factor. You need to get the 9 hole CR from the USGA website.

The thing is I think you need twenty 9 hole rounds to factor your handicap. I just kluges my 9 hole scores into the 18 hole rounds. It's possible my handicap spreadsheet needs a 0.1 adjustment either way.
