My Swing (Ernest Jones) - Page 48

OK, these changes are a little harder than I thought. The set-up stuff just takes repetition till I recognize the right feeling but I'm having key#2 issues from the new A4, just going to need to keep working on it. Question for @iacas , while working on the backswing pieces that Brian gave me I assume that my downswing piece (popping shoulder up while pushing hips forward) remains the same? I think it's just a matter of getting comfortable with the new A4 so I can regain the feel for the DS piece, it all feels so horizontal right now which is definitely different. Hitting lots of fats at anything remotely close to full speed, going to keep working at it. I'm hitting great positions with no ball but it gets a little ugly and OTT with a ball.

Set up like a triangle / \ then just bump your hips forward an inch or two.

Like this sexy beast:

Regarding the above, would setting up with everything forward like in the pic the @JetFan1983 marked

and then tipping my upper center back to the middle accomplish the same thing?

Don't know if I'd call you a beast but you're definitely dead sexy!

I shot some video today. Waiting for my camera battery to recharge, if it shows any improvement I'll post, if it's the same suckiness, I won't.

I have been posting the same suckiness in my swing thread for a while now.....:-(

Yes. Remember when you were here how much Key #2 (via your hips) HELPED you do the "shoulder move" you wanted to do. Your BS and hip motion were great when you were here, so review some of those videos for your setup and hip work on the DS.

Kind of to be expected. It was too vertical before, so now it's "more horizontal."

Sure. I tend to prefer what I said: set up 50/50 and then bump the hips. But if doing it another way works for you, great.

It's an address position. It takes no real athletic skill - just takes doing it correctly. :)

It doesn't include the hip adjustment @iacas told you about, but I thought this face-on clip of Louis Ousty would be cool to include, Ernest. Saw this today and thought of your thread. The lines the uploader drew seemed relevant.

And no need to quote or reply this one if there's nothing to say :-P

I didn't check out video, I'm on my phone, heading out. I did some mirror work tonight and realized that if I just address the ball naturally with a forward ball position I end up with a decent amount of axis tilt more or less automatically. Just another case of me overdoing something. The new backswing is getting better. Contact is still pretty iffy, but I think once I can stop actively working on those changes I'll be able to get my bigger priority piece back to the forefront and contact will improve.

I really suck at working on two things at once even if one's a BS piece and one's a DS piece.

Well there is hope because I can get this to look great with no ball but I'm having a hell of a time getting it to happen with a ball.

Was hoping to see more change here but it looks to be only 5° difference. I have hard time keeping a steady head while working on this. :~(

Lots of blood, sweat and tears but I'm starting to Evolve where Brian wants me to...finally.

The biggest thing he wanted me to change was my shoulder pitch at the top, I was WAY too steep. A few weeks work made virtually ZERO difference as can be seen here:

This is a still taken from today, pardon the flip-flops ;-) but I am on vacation B-).

Now I realize the camera angle sucks but I think this is still showing some decent progress with the path:

Again, I realize the camera angle is bad so I ain't popping the champagne bottle yet...still...the best I've felt about my swing in weeks going on months...

Hips starting to open a teeny, weeny little bit. SOLLOG would applaud.

Biggest change in feels right now is feeling like my arms stay completely straight all the way back and through the ball which shortens the swing up a bit and helps level out the shoulders a bit AND gets me loading into my right side a little more which is something else Brian wants me working on. Concerns are that my knees still change flex a little too quickly and my head comes off the ball more than I'd like but I'm getting far better contact and height again. I'm just going to keep hammering away at this for another few days and then send something in to Evolvr once I'm home (forgot my camera too so stuck with a beat up iPhone and no tripod)

Here's what I mean by head movement:

Closing comment: It all looks pretty freakin' ugly to me but I can hit the ball again so I can play golf again which is more than I could say a few weeks ago.

Good to hear from you again EJ.

Happy to hear you are hitting good shots again.

Thanks. I think I can see the light again. Swing is finally starting to feel athletic again which is a huge relief after feeling like the Tin Man for so long. Sometimes I wish I had fallen in love with volleyball or frisbee or something.

Just got back from my first round of 9 in several weeks. Didn't really keep score (did get 3 pars on short ones though), just having some fun with my non-golfing sister, mostly horsing around which is just what I need right now. Really encouraged by my ball flight though. High and far with very little curve. Backswing seems to be in a place where I'm able to get back to my Erie priority piece. Couple of fat shots which I think is from too much head movement rather than weight shift issues, I know my weight is getting forward because my rear foot would slip occasionally (regular running shoes) because it had virtually no weight on it by A6. Only one slice on the last hole, the rest were all straight-ish or pushed.

Hardest thing right now is keeping a steady head, the more horizontal feeling turn makes it hard to not drift off the ball on the backswing. Going to keep working on my setup and axis tilt.

Back to hitting the high ball that I love so much. Hard to believe how badly I was hitting the ball 3 weeks ago versus the past week. Uploading to Evolvr this week as soon as I get an opportunity to film. Still have directional issues, mostly pulls at the moment, but I almost don't care because I'm booming it again!!!

That's great it's a lot more fun when you have a predictable shot. I think you took my nice pull fade I played Saturday and had the worst round in about 3 years. Oh well keep working. Make sure you put those vids up so we can see the progress it makes us all feel good seeing someone improve.

Yeah. This is after a horrific stretch where I couldn't even get the ****ing ball airborne that culminated in me snapping the head off my driver with a ridiculous mishit. I had somehow gotten my backswing so incredibly ****ed up that I had NO chance of making clean contact. Things have started to work themselves out and I'll be stronger for it but I feel like I've lost a significant amount of my season and potential growth to that slump.

Ha well if you would have seen my approach shots on saturday you would have thought I had never hit anything but a driver in my life (I probably shanked approaches 9 shots in a row).  Im trying to think like you. Theres a destination ahead but theres going to be some bumps along the way.   Keep grinding bud.

So that's the real reason why you did not show up Sunday.  ;-)  I know all about the shanks bud.

Nice work EJ on getting out of the slump.  I can relate to your struggles.   Keep at it.

No I wanted to go so I could redeem myself. I actually hit the best 2 irons of the day on the par 3 17th and the approach on 18. I honestly have never hit my driver that good (which just pisses me off). Sorry EJ off topic.

Hitting the ball great right now. Mostly just working on my Extensor Action which really keeps my swing compact and controlled feeling. It also seems to really help me nail one of my priority pieces which is to keep my shoulder pitch from getting too exaggerated. I was measuring at 45* at A4 because I was over doing the "left shoulder down", now I'm consistently around 34*-35*.

Ball flight is nice and high and is sticking to the greens nicely. Misses tend to be pulls and seem to be most common when I over swing a bit. As long as I stop my backswing before I lose that straight right arm feel I usually stay on target. Picked up a buttload of distance with this shorter backswing too! In fact, running out of fairway and over shooting has been hurting my scores LOL. My 60* wedge has taken over a lot of shots that used to belong to my 56*.

Anyway, submitted to Evolvr today and am looking forward to what they have to say. Here's the videos I submit for those of you who are interested. Feel free to comment, even if it's just to make fun of my "net". ;-)

You must not be hitting real balls. I would worm burn one under quite quickly.
