Hi all,

I'm a high handicap golfer I bough one of those $300 complete set 4 years ago to see if i could get into the game. I played several time with it and i'm taking pro lessons, I'm progressing quite well and now play almost every week. I am still perfectioning my swing but I think my set is holding my performance on the green. It s worth for me to change the grip on my set and get it custom fitted or should I go for a new set of irons like those super game improvement one and a new driver???

Thanks

Custom fitting generally helps out higher handicap players more than low handicap players as long as the high handicapper has a reasonably consistent swing. As you started out 4 years ago I'd say your swing is likely to be reasonably grooved so a custom fitting would be beneficial. As at your local pro shops whether they do a dynamic fitting (as opposed to static fitting) and see what their recommendations for irons to try out would be. Then give various sets of irons a go until you find some that feel nice and suitable for your game.

Normally the cheaper sets of irons aren't worth the money to get fitted and regripped, especially as many places offer free fitting with new iron sets anyway.

Since you are taking lessons, I would suggest you have your teacher to advise you on grips, shafts,  and whether he thinks your current set is causing problems.

Since you say you are a high handicapper (100+), chances are whatever you get may not be what will be right for you as you improve, if you are under 100 a different set might be valid.

You likely would benefit most with a new driver, and if you look for a deal, you likely can get last year's model for a great price.

New irons likely wont solve many problems for you, until you improve your swing and consistency.  Same for a putter.

If you will be looking at a new set of irons, look at the Ping offerings. I know they are a bit on the pricey side, but very easy clubs to hit.

I always played with forged irons, but at times I would like to get a bit easier clubs to hit when my swing is not quite there. I tried the Ping irons ------ pretty impressed with them. I looked at I15 and the G15 clubs. The prices on these clubs should start coming down a bit as new models are already out (G20) and the rumored replacement for I15.
