I broke 90!

Man, this has been a long time coming. I only played a few times year up until a year ago, when I recommitted myself to my game and started practicing. I wasn't able to break 90 last year, so that was one of my goals for this year.

I shot an 85 at Nile Shrine (64/104). It's a short course, and not particularly difficult, but my best there previously was a 94. I went out in 43 and shot 42 on the back. Had a couple of bad holes, but my wedges and putter kept me in the fight. I also made a 20 footer for birdie - those don't come along that often for me.

So yeah, lots of work to do, but yay for reasons to be hopeful.

Well done my friend. I look forward to breaking 100 myself, and your story inspires me. So thanks!

Well done! Congratulations!

Re: I broke 90!

way to go. I think you will find that now you have done it, you will do it more often. breaking 80 is even more work, but that'll come as well, especially with the good short game that it sounds like you have, or will get. I wouldn't come close to breaking 90 without a good short game.

Re: I broke 90!

Everyone talks about breaking 100 as a milestone, but I think there is something particularly special about breaking 90. A golf pro once told my novice group that while the "bogey" is thought of as a bad score, we should not believe it. "Bogey golf is good golf," he said. And since bogey golf is usually a 90, you just beat that to a pulp. I sure remember my first 89! And I don't remember breaking 100 at all. I just did it at some point, and it didn't seem to be a big deal.

Outstanding job!

Actually, I'm very glad you said this. My goal isn't just to break 100 (although it's there), but to hit 90 or better. I figure I should be able to get "proximity to GIR" -- within chipping or a small pitch of the green in par-minus-two strokes. Then I should be able to get onto the green and two-putt. Do that every hole for a 90. Hitting greens or getting up-and-down lowers the score a bit, but my errors bring it back up.

I did exactly the above plan on the opening par-4 a while back and was smiling all the way to the second tee. The folks in my group (random pairing) wondered why a bogey made me so happy.

Thanks. I'm finding that as my short game has improved, it has really allowed me to not stress out over approach shots. If I miss the green, I miss it, and I still like my chances to get it up and down.

Re: I broke 90!

Congrats!!! Breaking 90 is one of my goals for this season, came close on the second round of the year, but fell apart on the last five holes...now I can't seem to find my swing at all. Keep practicing and good things will come I guess.

Re: I broke 90!

Stay with it. From now on bogey is your personal par. A true par is like a birdie, a birdie like an eagle, etc... Now see how often you can go beyond "par" and you will be in the mid-80's with diligent practice. Hit a decent drive. Get it close to the green. Chip up and two putt. At this stage, two-putt greens are golden. Avoid the three-peat.

Congradulations!

Congratulations man thats a great accomplishment. Im hoping to break 90 eventually. Ive been playing golf for about 5 months, and I play my home course about 4-5 times a week. Breaking 100 still excites me but lets hope I can join the under 90 club someday.

Re: I broke 90!

I've been under 90 a few times, all in the last year... Every time I go out, my goal is bogey golf...

I picked up 3 birdies over the weekend. Didn't have 3 all of last golf season!
