Trust me I don't have an ego thing when it comes to how far I can hit a club. If you can get there with a 7 but I need a 6 it doesn't matter to me as long as I get there.

But I like to know where my ball striking stands.

Today on the range I was hitting my 7 Pretty close to 160-165 AVERAGE. Where would this rank me you think in terms of length?

I think there's too many variable to figure in to an average. What temperature are you playing in? What elevation? For example, my distances are going to look much longer since I play at 3,500' above sea level. I hit my 7 iron about 185. I was in Grand Cayman last month playing at sea level and it took a full club off my distance. At 185, I was hitting a 6 instead. As long as you know how far your going to hit that club, don't worry about how far others are hitting.

But if you want to know where you rank, check out this chart. http://home.earthlink.net/~maxhamt/Yardage.htm

Perfect!!! That's what i've been looking for.

Oh and have fun in Maui. I played at one of the Wailea courses too on my honeymoon.

Since I've been working out like a madman the last month or so, I'm noticing how I'm getting longer and longer with all my clubs. Three weeks ago, I'd be lucky to hit my 7 iron from 120 yards - and I'd probably be on the front fringe. Now, I'm hitting 145-150, easily.

lol that chart just goes to show you that distances not mean much...

i just started playing golf last september and according to that chart, im a male touring pro and 'very long'

i played in my first tournament yesterday and shot a 98. i hit 10 drives that were 280-290 in the fairway but screwed up short shots that was under 50 yards.

it is such a nice feeling to hit a long drive and have the people you're playing with go 'wow' and stare in amazement.

that chart is helpful, but you all should use that as a very rough guideline. if i use a set of nike blades, their 49 degree PW will net me "average" distance. if i grabbed my buddy's TM R7 (don't know which one), their PW is 44 degrees, and i hit that 140 yards.

Bear in mind that face angle != launch angle. Musclebacks launch the ball lower and most cavity-back stuff (particularly those with lots of weight low) launch the ball higher.

Titleist's 695.MB is two degrees weaker than the 695.CB, but they blend at any club because their launch angle is the same.

Very good points

iacas as it then lends itself to how is the average really defined? Is the average PW 45 or 46 or 47 or 48??? Is the average PW cavity back or blade? Is the average PW cast or forged? All of these could have an affect. However, I found the link sort of enlightening though as I charted myself and the yardages I hit my clubs and I found that some clubs fell into one category (long) and then another (very long). Hmm...maybe I am swinging some clubs too hard? Actually it was almost 50/50 split up between my bag as two would be long and then the next two very long. I am going to have to ponder this and think about it the next time I go to the range.

Does it really matter how you "rank"?
I know how far I hit every club in my bag (If I hit it right).
On a 190yd par 3 at my home course I hit my 3wood. My playing partner hits a 4 iron. But, i usually out score him.

I agree--I think the key is more that you know how far you hit your club, rather than how far you hit a specific club compared to other people. Just because I've hit a 7 iron 170 yards (to my detriment--ball landed in cabbage behind the green) means I'm long, short, or whatever. By that scale, I'd be long...but does long necessarily mean a good score? I can't putt for shit, and sometimes have a hard time breaking 100.

The only time I can see being too short with your clubs as a problem is if you can't reach a par 4 in two shots, or are hitting driver off the tee on a par 3 and coming up short...in that case, and only then, it's costing you strokes and hurting your score. And, it to an extent is also a macho thing...it's un-manly to hit driver and then be out-driven by your playing partner who's hitting a 3 wood. Or something like that.

Good point. I agree that as long as you know how far each club goes (on the average) then you are in a good position to play well. Well if you can putt, right

"lamebums" ? When I play I really don't feel like I am out there trying to win a long drive contest each time I hit a shot but often times upon reflection afterwards I find I try to over power the golf course because I think I am long and it hurts my score.

That's for sure. If I have to relace my shoes after trying to "crush" the ball, you can bet It will be a short walk to my second shot. (probably not a rider)

Yesterday during the AT&T; Classic Charles Howell III hit a 6-iron from about 237 yards as his second shot on a Par 5... He came up just short of the green, so he hit it about 225 -230 yards...

That is a long 6-iron...

Personally, I choose my club based on a lot of factors, wind, lie, elevation, how I feel that day, etc... When hitting from the tee on a Par 3 I will usually hit one less club than I would if I was hitting the same distance from the fairway...

I think that 160 - 165 yards is a pretty good distance to hit a 7-iron...

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
