driver for my son

Hey guys! need a little help here.
my 10 year old son ( 4'6" tall) is having a hard time hitting his driver. he gets really intimidated teeing off so he will usually go for his 5 iron to tee off. i have told him he needs to get comfortable hitting his driver as he can't continue to shy away from it. I dont want him to get frustrated either and give up on golf.

I am considering getting him a mens driver and cutting it down for him. I figure if the club has a bigger face, he will make contact more often. (However, i also know that i will increase the weight of the club by using a mens club head). A buddy of mine has a left handed 400cc driver ( my son is left handed also) with a senior flex shaft that is in excellent condition. He offered to let me have it since his dad doesnt use it.

I figure: if it encourages confidence then it can't hurt and if it doesnt work, i spent nothing.

What do you think?

I dont see anything wrong with your idea. I started using a mens driver when I was 7 years old. Of course it was cut down, but thats what I used. Great idea. I hope it works out for you.

Hey guys! need a little help here.

I don't know how big your son is, how much he weighs, etc., but at 5'6" and about 150lbs., I've hit some balls with my daughter's Ping Moxie driver and, boy did that ball sail! The driver is about 360cc, the face is hot and the shaft is 40" long. It is so easy to hit. The shaft would seem right for a ten year old. The Moxie set is billed as unisex, so it is designed for either boys or girls. The graphite shafts on the irons seem very soft to me, but the driver and fairway wood shaft/head combination are very impressive. Before you cut down an adult club, you may wish to have your son swing that Ping Moxie driver. Good luck.

There are a couple of issues I see with cutting down a men's club, this is even a worse idea then letting your wife/girlfriend use your hand me downs. The game is frustrating enough, you don't need il fitting equipement to make it harder.

The main one is the shaft itself, when you cut it down it changed the characteristics of the shaft. Cutting it may result in an undsired flex and it may change the flex point relative to the whole shaft.

Also the head is going to be so dispraportional to the shaft that this my have an il effect on the clubs performance.

They do make junior clubs and even though the club you are getting is free it might be worth it to go check out what they have to offer for juniors.

Hey guys thanks for the replies.
i haven't seen the Ping Moxie but my son has hit the new Callaway x for juniors. The driver is 360cc and looks beautiful. he hit really well with it.
as for cutting the shaft, I figured the shaft wouldn't be the same. so how bout changing the shaft? i can take it to golfsmith and have it changed to a junior shaft.
what do you think?

Hey guys thanks for the replies.

When we bought the Ping set for my daughter, the Callaway set had not been distributed so I have not seen it. I am sure the Callaway clubs are great. I would strongly suggest either the Ping set or the Callaway set, or even the other children's sets for your son, rather than a cut down set that would probably be poorly matched to his height/weight, etc. Also, after you factor the cost of a new shaft and installation, you wouldn't have to pay that much more for the Callaway or Ping Moxie set. I have two sons, the oldest is 12 and the youngest 10. I went shopping with them for new clubs a few months ago and ended up buying them ladies clubs. They a little shorter and lighter than mens, and also have more flex in the shaft. Also knowing how fast kids grow, these will last a little while. Anyway they both hit the snot out of them. My 12 year old averages about 180 of the tee with the driver and is playing 8 iron from 100 yards. The only thing I changed on the clubs was to take a little modeling paint and pain over the "adies" on the ladies flex, so now it just says "L Flex".

Hey Brit, Thats a great idea painting over the "adies". My son would kill me if i asked him to use anything that says ladies on it. lol. As for buying my the Ping or Callaway, my son already has a junior set. but the driver is a driver/ 3 wood and i figured i could get him my friends club and cut it down or replace the shaft and use the driver /3 wood as just a fairway club. i figured it would be easier for him to make contact with the ball off the tee having a larger faced club so he wouldn't be so frustrated and risk losing interest. just trying to keep the game as interesting and fun as possible. he takes lessons from a pro and they can work with the new driver.

I dont know it was just a thought. i'd hate for my golfing buddy to quit on me!!!! lol.

When I was still growing, I had a set of ladies clubs, never had any problem hitting them.

If you go with a men's club, replace the shaft, cutting it will not help.

Your best bet is to go to a large chain store or your local pro and get on a launch monitor. It is amazing the difference you both will see just from using the correct flex and weight in a golf shaft. Usually costs around $20 and is money well spent.

i used my dads cut down king cobra 350 ss driver when i was 10, and i hit it pretty well. i recommand the bigger clubhead

Hey guys thanks for the help. The launch monitor is a great idea actually. i'll get him in there and it will give him more of a sense of confidence since the club is being built just for him. and that i think is a big factor in his inconsistency with the driver. he sets up thinking he is going to hit it bad and its all downhill from there. and at 10 years old, im sure he is consumed with that thought. im hoping i can break him out of it.

i have called a couple stores and they think im on the right path, but suggested i make sure i do it right. they dont see a problem with the bigger club head but they told me to go in and they would help me figure out the shaft options. Lets see what they recommend.
