what driver do you play? forgiving, or precision?

smaller traditional shape driver little less than the 460cc limit.

or the big forgiving driver?

what shape do you guys prefer. And what driver do you have, or has caught your attention recently and has you thinking of switching from one to the other?

Ive been playing for 2 or 3 years and in that time I've managed to put 5 drivers into my bag and 4 of those have been taken out. An obnoxius sounding and looking Wilson staff spine driver. Good design but too loud. Wilson staff smooth. Just didn't feel good off the face. One last Wilson chance was backwards. Wilson deep red 2 distance driver. Good. But the shaft was a bit stiff and the fatshaft hosel eliminated shaft switching. I strayed from hopes of Wilson and fell for the R9 460 but just never knew what I was doing wrong when I hit it. I settled recently on an exotics CB3 tour which is smaller and harder to hit. But I like when I do something wrong because I actually know what I did...great sound great feel but I like hearing opinions. So lets hear it

So far my favorite is a Bobby Jones Players Series head (by Jesse Ortiz) with an Aldila N-Gage shaft at 44".  It's a 440cc head that more resembles a persimmon head with the bulge out near the toe.  Nice sound, very forgiving on mishits, and longer than any OEM driver I've had.

Next up is the one I've been wanting for some time now, and finally just acquired, the Wishon 919THI in my signature.  As soon as the snow melts off I'll be going for a test drive.

I use a large head driver, I'm a big fan of TaylorMade drivers and currently use a R9.

I use a Nike STR8 Fit 9.5 degree driver and I love it. Depending on how I've been playing, I can adjust the angle and play for a draw or a fade (not mid round, of course) good distance, also. I've got the Project X 6.5 stiff in it. I get about 290-320 out of it.

I currently use a Tour Burner TP, 9.5, Rombax TP-75 (7w06) in stiff.  It's 450cc.  It suits my swing just fine, and I have had some awesome drives the past season and a half with it, and it has that sweet TM "ping" sound to it.  Before that, I had an FTi tour and an FTi tour LCG, and both were obnoxiously loud.  Loud enough to startle the group that was waiting on a backed up tee with us, and even myself a few times.  The black sole of the TB sure shows the marks though (bought it used, so most were already there, wink-wink).  I am thinking about getting an R9 Supertri, just to try the adjustability, but I don't plan on getting rid of this one just yet.

Oh, I guess that puts me in the precision category, because it isn't all that forgiving.

Not sure why the ferrule is serial numbered, TM never did get back to me on it when I asked about it.

The red on the edge of the sole is just the light, playing jedi mind tricks with the camera.

R11 TP 9*. I like the club because I can work it both ways. And even if I miss it, it still flies 240 to 250.

I've recently hit the RBZ driver and was hooking it like mad. I just felt like I couldn't find the slot/head. I have also hit the R11S, and liked it. But I need to do a better comparison because when I hit it, I didn't have my current R11 to compare side to side.

I haven't hit the new Ping i20, but it looks beautiful. I'd also like to hit the Tour Exotics, but my fitter doesn't carry them. I may buy a new driver later this year... But my next purchase is a 3W.

These 4 for now, but i just built me a G15 with a VS Proto 70s. The Geek and the Supertri also have VS Proto 70s shafts, the Adams 4G a Harrison Saga and the Bridgestone a Grafalloy Wounded Warrior.

I have several as well,

  • Cobra S-2 11.5*, Regular Fujikura shaft
  • Cobra S-2 10.5*, Regular Fujikura shaft
  • Powerbilt Air Force One N7, 10.5* Fujikura shaft
  • PowerBilt Air Force One N7 WMD, 10.5* Fujikura shaft

It just depends on how I feel, what the weather is like and what course I am playing. The 11.5* provides more accuracy and the PowerBilt WMD provides more distance.

I've heard alot of good things about those AF1 clubs. Had one of the Tours this past summer and couldn't get past the shape of the head and the closed face. It was a jhook machine for me.

The original AFO's were ugly, but the 2nd 7 3rd Generation Drivers are sweet, especially the WMD!

I had the Air Foil Tour. Just couldn't get past the shape and the closed face angle.

Well I like the rounder more traditional shape. It suits my eye. The club im playing now is a bit tough to control as expected and after going onto a simulator to check on my swing speed vs the shaft flex i play now and was a bit disappointed. Now im stuck between the idea of a new driver head that's a bit more forgiving and stable through impact it re-shafting with an oem shaft for the consistency i need as well as maybe a bit added distance

Of the clubs im interested in

Ping g15

ping i15

Taylor made r9

cleveland

Or even Adams who my close golf shop pro said is the only company to offer their clubs with the "real deal" shaft

Anybody know if this is an honest truth?

I'm also still "new" to the game. 2 or 3 years... so hearing of these other companies is always nice because there are apparently alot of companies out there that fly a bit under the radar

Im playing a Mizuno MX-700 10.5 degree right now.  Its pretty forgiving.  Im planning on picking up an older, low-lofted driver than isnt 460cc soon though.  Ive found quite a few Mizuno MP-001s on Ebay for cheap and will likely go that route.

I've also seen these online because I have an old Nike forged driver whose shaft broke and I was looking at forged drivers and if Mizuno makes some sweet feeling irons then that club must feel pretty good as well I just wish I knew how to compare it to my driver or even the drivers of today in terms of feel distance forgiveness control etc. Its a nice looking club though
