Let us pretend a "friend" of mine comes to you and says "Hey, I want to learn how to hit a draw.  Oh, and by the way, here's a big bag of money if you can teach me."  You watch the student hit a few balls, and he has a bit of a push/fade ball flight.  In order of what would be most likely to get him to curve it the other way, what specific changes would you suggest?  The more specific the better (e.g.:  "hips pushed towards target at setup" vs "weight forward".

Any takers?

Thanks,

Snowbound

- Move the rear foot backward a little (toward the heel)

- Move the ball position toward the rear foot

- Strengthen the grip

- Swing as normal

That's how I personally hit a draw.

If your "friend" is already hitting pushes then you could just try a stronger grip, showing more knuckles on the left hand. That might be enough.

He has a bit of a push fade, like it starts right then goes slightly farther right? He needs to get the clubface to meet the ball slightly closed to his current swingpath, as opposed to slightly open to his current swingpath. I'd check his grip and assuming it was neutral, ask him to set up with the face a bit more closed and make the same swing. Maybe he needs his clubs more upright or his swing a bit flatter. It's really hard to suggest what this one person should do to change his current swing to a more repeatable or powerful one, but since you're only asking about the ball flight, changing that is pretty straightforward.

hehe, don't get me wrong, i wouldn't give this to someone in a lesson.

If someone HAD to draw it, from slicing it, those would be the primary components IMO.

It depends what type of push fade, depending if you shift the path more rightward, or get the face more closed to the path., Perhaps a bit of both.

Might be neither, might be the 3rd accumulator rolling, which is a more complex understanding again.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your replies. My "friend" is actually me. My ball flight almost always starts right and then stays straight or fades. If I am stubborn, I am straight at the target and shoot 95. When in a more accepting mood, I will aim left and scrape together a decent score. But, I figure unless I learn to move it right-to-left, I won't really know how to tame the fade that turns into a wicked slice. James - you are a funny, funny guy. I don't have a daughter, but do have Paypal....and pints of beer. I appreciate your extensive list. I need to research a few of the terms. Is Palmar flex the way Arnold would show his biceps?? :-D Off to the range! Darryl

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
