I have noticed from some of the signatures on the forums that some members have more than 14 clubs listed in their bags, which led me to think are they switching out clubs depending on the course or are they going with 15-16 sticks in the bag?

So whats the story guys?

Haha, funny you mention that. I noticed the same thing. Can't recall where, but in one thread where we were discussing clubs I noticed one or two too many in a few people's sig.

Don't ask me. I only ever list 14 clubs and I only ever play 14 clubs.

I think he is automatically assuming "Irons" to mean from the 3 Iron to the pitching wedge, when a lot of people ditch the three iron in favor of a hybrid instead, but still say "Irons".

I have more than 14 listed, but I rotate long irons and wedges out depending on what I need, want or feel comfoartable with. Not that it has really been making a difference lately...

Sometimes when I play by myself I take more than 14 clubs just so I can practice with them all. But when I play with people or play for "real" I will only take 14 club.

I'm up to 14 myself--I might go to 15 soon, because I'm going to pick up a one-iron these days. I tried hitting a few at the cage over in Golf Galaxy, and it felt pretty good (the good machine which tells you how far the ball goes however was broken). I'm a hell of a lot more consistent with my irons than my fairway woods, so I might ditch one of them in favor of the one-iron, if I'm playing in a real event.

I saw a Ping Eye 2 for only 20 bucks, I should pick it up next time I'm up there..

What's so hard about hitting a one iron?

I list 14 and only play with 14. I do change putters somewhat often but other than that I don't believe in switching clubs too often as it breeds inconsistancy.

What's so hard about hitting a one iron?

To quote Lee Trevino - When asked what he does during a thunderstorm after being struck by lightning. He replied that he held up a one iron because "Even god can't hit a one iron".

One irons have gone the way of the buffalo and persimmon woods. Most club manufacturers don't even make them anymore. Too little loft, way too hard to hit.

One irons have gone the way of the buffalo and persimmon woods. Most club manufacturers don't even make them anymore. Too little loft, way too hard to hit.

One reason for that is that as manufacturers made club lofts "stronger" - creating the need for the invention of the gap wedge - today's 2- or 3-iron is the equivalent of yesteryear's 1-iron.

I'm currently playing 13 clubs and I need something to fill the gap betwen my 5-iron (185) and my 5-wood (220).

I've considered a 7-wood or a hybrid.....

Any suggestions?

Try the Taylor Made Rescue Dual 4 iron, 22deg.

I love it and hit it about 200 or so. Haven't played hybrids until recently and really helps my game a lot.

To quote Lee Trevino - When asked what he does during a thunderstorm after being struck by lightning. He replied that he held up a one iron because "Even god can't hit a one iron".

I am sorely tempted to hit Golf Galaxy and pick up a one iron, preferring to bag my 3 and 5 wood (I am that unreliable with the fairway woods). I hit a bunch of balls in the cage with a one iron, and it hurt like hell when I caught it off the toe, but otherwise seemed like another iron.

I'm pitifully unreliable with my fairway woods--more often than not, I'll hit a topper that goes 10 feet, or chunk it 30 yards. Either way, since I bust a 3 iron on the average of 230 yards (and if the increase in length applies to a one iron over a three) then I could drive the green in two on par 5's, eagle all the way to lower my score. An added bonus...I could get a gap wedge if I replaced 3W and 5W with 1I.

4 and 3 irons. If it's consistent with your other irons, you're looking at ~195 and ~205, give or take.

Don't let people talk you out of trying the 1, if you like it. I'm practically married to my 1 iron... I've had it longer than my wife, and if it came down to picking between them... well I hope it doesn't ;)

Your game sounds like mine, except I don't even own any fairway woods. I need to work on hitting my driver straight, but I'm never motivated to, because I just leave it home and hit 1 iron off every tee. It goes ~250 and straight way more often than not. I didn't carry a wood at all for most of last season... which freaks people out, btw. Actually, I'm looking to find a 2 iron, because I get caught between the 1 and 3 on some holes. I may be the only person in the world whose safety-blanket club is their 1 iron, but I'd hit it on every hole if I could. Try it, you might like it.

I carry the legal amount (14) in my bag, however I find that I rarely use any more than 7 or 8 clubs. They are there just incase I need them, but since I hit the ball pretty far off the tee, I never need a 3 iron, and when the off chance arises that I do need a long fairway shot around 210 -230, I just choke down on a 5 wood and give it a nice low followthrough.

This finally makes two of us. I took my 3 iron and tried out a few 1 irons on the launch monitor. There was little if any difference at all between the clubs (although that could be because my irons are an inch and a half longer than standard), and the launch angle was the same. I ditched the idea of getting a 1 iron for now, but I hit 3 iron off the tee with great results... 230+ yards, in the fairway, great second shot coming up...better than being 280 yards in the cabbage, under a tree, or whatever. Either way, usually in the right rough.

The 3 iron, you could say, is my own safety blanket. After hiting 4 OB's with driver on one hole, I bagged it and hit 3 iron off each tee...I was 2 over for the last 5 holes, including a birdie on a par 5 (3 iron, 3 iron, 5 iron, 10 foot putt). The 12 on that hole where I hit all the OB's didn't help my score, though.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
