  1. 1. What were your feelings on Sunday at the Honda as it all unfolded?

    • I wanted Rory to get the job done and didn't care about anyone else. Would have been upset if he'd crashed.
      12
    • I sort of wanted to see if Rory had it in him to hold up. Really wanted him to EARN it.
      13
    • I was hoping that someone would come out of nowhere and take the prize.
      1
    • Until Tiger put the hammer down I was rooting for Rory, but then changed my allegiance.
      8
    • I wanted Rory to win, but would have been more excited had Tiger won. And felt guilty about it.
      3
    • Was just happy that Tiger might be back. That outweighs any talk of number ones or whatever.
      2
    • Just happy to watch the story unfold. No favourites.
      4
    • Man...I REALLY wanted Tiger to do wreck the party!

I was thrilled for Rory - but Tiger made it a bit of a double whammy.

How did you feel?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I thought Tiger was out of it on Sunday, so I was rooting for Rory and Keegan.  When Tiger made his run I couldn't help but root for him to win just to shut up the press and set the stage for the Masters.  In the end, it was great to see Rory grind it for a win and Tiger able to take his 62 and 2nd place  finish to the next tournament.

I was rooting for Tiger, but not rooting against Rory...it was kind of weird. Like a lot of people, I am just a big fan of great finishes and comebacks. So when Tiger started going I found myself getting all charged up and yelling at the TV for him to keep it going. When Tiger started getting a little cranky after his shot barely cleared the water on 15, I think I actually yelled at the TV "Tiger, dont start acting like a bitch and just get it done!" Like he could actually hear me. My wife thought I was nuts. Especially after 17 and 18...I think I may have been standing on the couch at one point. Rory has been my favorite golfer for the last couple years, but i still wanted Rory to drop a couple....I wanted a Rory vs Tiger playoff and for Rory to take him down in dramatic fashion!!! It was still pretty sweet though! Sky is the limit for Rory!

There are 4 rounds in a golf tournament. Tiger doesn't deserve to win unless he shows up for all four. Not 1, 2, 3, not 5. He can still make a Sunday charge, but there's now competition at the top that's straight up better than him, where there was a huge vacuum before. Had Rory not been there, Woods would have gutted Gillis in a playoff, assuming his nerves didn't dry up in regulation.

As long as Rory can shoot in the 60s on Sunday, he's unbeatable. 66-67-66 is pretty special in such a tough competition, and he's been doing it so easily for the last year. He could have shot a 74 and made a top 5, and he usually is in the top 5. Woods's 68-69-62 to close the tournament tied Rory's opening rounds... But he lost it on day 1. Rory made his worst round look pretty good, while Tiger couldn't sink a putt that day. Pretty easy to win a tournament when all you have to do is shoot even par.

Tiger will be back if and when he wins at Augusta. Rory is the best in the world, and I don't see him becoming a choker in the long run. He'll continue to break scoring records in majors, maybe not at Augusta because it's not about amassing a lead, but in US opens and PGA. I also think Rory could indeed win the British Open, regardless of what he says. Frankly, that's Tiger's best shot at a major right now.

Woods's putting issues might have been fixable in a day, but that's a waste of a day he can't afford. He's still clutch, but he needs to start early and stay strong, not just finish well. Rory is going to be the guy who beats Tiger by a few paltry strokes, because 5 years ago there was no one at -12 to ruin Tiger's win. Well, now there is.

In closing, one of the two will win the Master's this year, though it's an even year and Phil could lurk a bit. If Rory shoots 69 on the final day, he'll win or tie. If he shoots 70 or above, Woods will win the tournament. A playoff is too tough to call, but Tiger's score will matter in relation to Rory's and to no other standard. That's my prediction.

Ummmm....Not even sure what to say or where I would even start with this...got a lot of whoulda coulda shoulda going on here. And then you are talking like you got it all totally figured out...a lot of definites...this is whats going to happen, this how he is going to do it, this is how he's not going to do it. That isn't as much of prediction as it is you telling us how its all gonna go down. You didn't by chance travel into the future in a Delorean, the year 2015 perhaps, and steal Biff Tannen's Sports Almanac did you? Cuz that's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship! (Back to the Future II for those who don't get it) anyway, plenty of tournaments have been won with only three good rounds and one not so good round...even two really good rounds and two so so rounds. Actually, you know what, I am gonna stop right there and just stay away from this one. That will probably get me to bed the earliest. If you were looking for a debate, I am pretty sure it is coming your way. God speed!

You just dated yourself a bit, I think... :P

Anyway, Tiger's rounds were one bad one, 2 mediocre ones, and one fantastic one. Had he shot a pair of 67s, -3 on this course which is doable, or made his bad round into a mediocre one, he would have been at -12. The way the scoring went at this tournament, breaking par was the key, not shooting a low round. Only Rory and Gillis shot in the 60s all 4 days. At a very tough course, even par might be a good score, especially on the toughest day. But it doesn't matter much for Rory, since he's the best at shooting in the mid 60s in the world, it seems.

I made some bold predictions, admittedly. I might be wrong, but I'm calling it now. Am I stirring the pot? Maybe. Will I get some arguments? Probably. But I'm shooting from the hip here, calling it like I see it. This tournament was not a must win for Tiger, Augusta is. If he doesn't win there, it'll hurt his recovery more, and he's already lost a lot of his mental advantage. If he keeps playing like this, he'll be ranked in the top 5, though.

Rory playing good golf all 4 days is insurmountable except for the likes of Woods and other top players playing very good golf, and Rory has an extra gear they don't, or at least don't anymore. He can shoot good scores in the mid 60s on courses most players can't consistently break par, just like Woods used to. I don't think Rory will win a truckload of majors, but he sure deserves that #1 tag.

ha ha! that I did. Or maybe I am just into 80's movies cuz its hip these days. You did make some bold predictions but in your response you made some very good points. And I like your style...keep shooting from the hip...I do the same. That's probably the same reason we both got into it with that know it all bilinguru...recyclers like that guy don't understand someone with an original thought or opinion...they have to combat it with a fact they googled real quick. And I find it funny that you told him how to block people and he ended up blocking you. Oh well!!...big loss! Anyway..Rory sure has been keeping it lower than the rest and can definitely kick it up a notch when need be. I don't think Augusta is a must for Tiger, but it could definitely bring back that killer instinct he once had. it's gonna be a great year regardless! take it easy!

As a Tiger fan, I was pulling for him and he played the best he could play. The deficit was just too much to overcome. And I was pulling for another Masters 2011 from Rory, I admit it. Not a Rory fan for some reason.

Looking forward to Doral. Definitely a track high up on Tiger's list.

  • Can't wait for the Masters
  • But hey, Doral is next week, then Bay Hill. Win win!
  • Hope Woods keeps it up - give SnT & its ilk more exposure - helps the avg golfer. Making it easier to play is good for the game.
  • Can't wait for the Masters. Cue up the sappy soundtrack.

As a Tiger fan, I'm always looking for him to play well. On Sunday, I wanted Rory to win. I was rooting for Tiger to have a good round for multiple reasons, but ultimately wanted Rory to win it. The ideal turnout would have been a playoff between the two over multiple holes where Rory won it in the end with a good birdie. I want Rory to do well and I wanted him to climb to the top of the OWGR.

And the pro Woods slant on NBC during the back 9 of Rory McIlroy's round was a major turnoff. They were trying to will a playoff via announcing. Really?

Not sure why you thought it was pro Tiger, I didn't get that impression at all.  Tiger and Lee Westwood had great final rounds and made it interesting.  The other contenders seem to falter when they all had chances.  I agree that they spend too much time on the Stars and not enough on the rest, but it wasn't all about Tiger.  It was about a couple of great players shooting a 62 & 63 in the final round to put pressure on the leader.

Rory really stepped up and it shows he can handle the pressure.  This is where he really is a lot like Tiger of old, mental toughness.  He learned from last year's Masters and now he is going to be very tough to beat.

What was really fun was having it on two channels!  Saturday, they didn't have the commercials synced, so I was switching back and forth missing all those Cialis and Michelob Ultra ads!!!

I was pulling for the North Irelander. I do think, unless something drastic happens,he is the future of golf.  The future might be this year, or in ten years, but he seems to be the real deal.  And, it is nice having a number 1 who's actually won a "Major" again.

was pulling for Gillis - fellow 40+ year old, never had much success in teh US.     glad he made that last putt on 18 to tie Tiger - earned him an extra couple hundred grand.
