To 7 Wood or Not?

Hi

I currently carry a 5 wood (R flex) and a fairway driver (13 degree loft)…bought a new set of irons (4-PW) which have pretty strong lofts (I don’t carry a 3 wood because I get plenty of distance on all my clubs and hit the 5 wood very consistently to about 260 yards and the fairway driver gets me about 280-290 (but I am not as straight as I am with the 5 wood)). The 4 iron has a 23 degree loft and the 5 wood has an 18 degree loft. Unfortunately, its very hard to find an individual 3 iron that matches the set I have.  This has left me with 13 clubs in the bag (I don’t carry a LW and really feel no need to carry one) and have been fiddling with the idea of buying a 7 wood. My questions to any of you are:

 

  1. Do any of you  carry a 7 wood?
  2. Is a 7 wood a suitable replacement for 3 iron distance?
  3. What 7 wood would you recommend?

 

Finally…I plan to get fitted for a new driver (with a more standard loft hopefully) that I can hit consistently, around the end of this year. Should I just not bother with buying a 7 wood and hang on till the year end to add another driver to the bag (and in the meanwhile continue with the 13 clubs in the bag)?

 

I know that’s a lot of questions, so thank to anyone who responds.

I have always carried a 7 wood and I am a recent 9 wood convert..

I struggle with the long irons and cant hit hybrids to save my self..

In my new clubs i have gone 4w 7w 9w..

A 7W would fill the gap if it split the distance between 4i and the 5W. Note, though, that a 7W would have a much higher ball flight than a 3i.

 

From your distance description you have good clubhead speed. Thus, you might try out a 3i from another model of irons. Lots of slightly used 3i for sale in the used club bins. Also, you might try a Mizuno MP Fli-Hi hybrid iron... comes in 2i 18* / 3i 21*/ 4i 24*.

I don't think I'll ever get rid of my 7 Wood.  It has added a real consistency to my game from the fairway that I don't have with any of my other long clubs.  It has saved me quite a few times over the past couple of years, and I find myself pulling it instead of my 4 Wood most of the time, just because I know exactly what the result will be.

What about a 21 degree hybrid? It would likely flight a bit higher than your 4 iron abut would be a great option to bridge the gap between your 5 wood and 4 iron. Would recommend trying one of those out with the latest Adams or maybe TaylorMade. Not sure what's available in Singapore.

I have a 7 wood that I rotate with an Adams 22* hybrid as a 3 iron replacement. 7 wood is a nice club, easy to hit and should fill distance gap between your 5 wood and 4 iron. I like Ping woods, currently using G15 series. They are forgiving and give good distance as well.

I used my 7 Wood to hit a great shot today.  420 yard Par 4, ended up 180 yards out to a green that was 20 ft above my shot, so I played it for 200 yards.  Hit a bullet in and it hit and rolled up about 15 feet of the pin.  2 putted for my par (of course)

 

I still wouldn't give up my 7 Wood for any hybrid, it's just too reliable.
