Hey everyone,

I need a new set of clubs so that I don't have to keep sharing one set with my younger brother.

Also, some of the irons in the set are too short for me to really play comfortably.

When I posed the idea to my parents of me buying my own set of clubs they said: "great I have a coupon to sports authority, lets go buy another of the 180$ complete sets"

So, that is NOT what I want to do, I would like to have nicer, fitted clubs that I can play with and progress with for the next few years.

My only problem is that I need to find a set that can compete with the value of a full 180$ set, and I am not allowed to buy used.

I like the idea of ordering through giga golf and using their e-fit system.

I like the looks of the trx v.11 irons and for 159 for an iron set 3-pw it seems like great value.

I am also planning on getting the TRX ti pearl driver (I love the look of the white-topped head) and an SGS 56 and 60 degree wedge.

I would like to get a hybrid but may leave that for a birthday present and try my luck with the long irons, if I want a hybrid sooner I can always borrow one out of the old set.

Same plan with the 3 and 5 wood.

What do you guys think about the value and quality of these items for the set?

I think they will definitely be an improvement over my current Axial Ram set, and they come in right about 300$ total, which is the maximum I am really looking to spend.

Thanks for all your input,

Sebastian

I started playing last May with a RAM G Force Tour starter set. After 5 months or so I replaced them with the following from Gigagolf: A driver which they no longer sell, not sure which TBH. A GXi 3 Wood TRX MR Control Irons 3-PW SGS 52.06 SGS 58.12 (I kept the RAM putter) I'm incredibly pleased with them. The custom fitting made a huge difference for me, and and i think as a beginner getting custom fit clubs is important because otherwise you will compensate for the club and learn a bad swing. Where else are you going to get that for $150/iron set? I would recommend Gigagolf clubs to anyone, but especially someone in your situation. I also will caution you that the bag I got from them kind of sucks. Its wearing out pretty quick and the fabric on one of the shoulder straps has unraveled to reveal the white foam insides (to be fair I've been playing a ton and uaually walking). They also originally cut the shaft on one of my wedges too long. They were really nice about it and fixed it promtly for me. Clubs are great though, I would buy them again.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
