What is the best driver on the market for a high handicapper (me)?

I just got fitted for a new shaft on my old Nike Sumo driver.  I like the driver, but I'm tired of the sound (a very loud CLANK) and feel like I'm cheating myself by not taking advantage of the newer technology on the market.

What suggestions do you all have for a new driver for a high handicapper?  I'm very inconsistent in my drives.  I'll hit 3 down the center and then slice or hook the next 4 holes.  I'm working on my mechanics, but is there a driver on the market right now that would suit me.

Thanks in advance.

If your swing isn't really consistent, I would probably go with one of the adjustables on the market.  You'll have to go demo them to see which one feels right for you.  R9's are dirt cheap now, R11's are reasonable, Callaway RAZR Fit, R11S, Nike has one and it doesn't sound like a baseball bat like the Sumo, Cobra has a really nice looking white adjustable driver, although I haven't hit it yet.

WTF is that!?!? Yuck!!

To the OP: I would suggest looking into a PING K15. I dont play one myself, but I know a couple guys who have it. Not necessarily because they need it, but more because they're lazy. Haha. Not saying everyone who uses it is lazy, just that its made to be easy and forgiving. The K15 is PING's extra forgiving, super game improvement, beginner line.

In my Ogio bag.

And a yellow ball.

I'd suggest you add loft.  There is no substitute for hitting a ton.  Read the thread right above this.  It is totally personal and it also matters what courses you play.

I wouldn't drop $300 on a driver right now unless you found something you love.  I'd either get fit or, barring that, get something used with 11-13* of loft.  I wouldn't drop $349 on a new driver without getting fit.  That seems nuts to me.

What is your swing speed?

I got fitted for a new shaft recently.  I'm lucky to have a great outfitter in Columbus, Ohio about 30 mins away.  A new shaft on my old driver (the Sumo) because I hit it relatively well.  When I'm off I'm way off, but those moments are becoming more and more rare.  The guy doing the fitting clocked my swing speed at 110.  I'm thinking about buying a Callaway Razr Hawk off of a buddy of mine and putting on my fitted shaft.

Are you working on mechanics after advice from a lesson, or are you just hoping things get better? If you are struggling to cure yourself, a $50 lesson is a lot cheaper than buying a new driver. And will get you better quicker.

If you need a lesson, take one and practice to overcome the flaw. Then, consider a driver fitting. If you buy a new driver, the fitting often is free. Or, your driver might be just fine with a tweaked swing.

I've had several lessons over the years.  My problem is really consistently repeating my good swings (like everyone else).  I'll shoot 90 one day and 115 a week later.  The only problem I have with my Nike driver is the sound and the feel.  It's been a good driver, but I just want to upgrade and want to make sure I'm getting something that's going to work for me.

I can definately vouch for that sounds like you are hitting an empty coke can.  But to be honest going on WUtiger said if you can hit that driver fine and it is your swing don't make the mistake of thinking a new driver will help.  Spend the 50$ and get a lesson would be my advice.  A bad swing will result in a bad shot no matter what club you have in your hand.

At that swing speed, I'd find an Adams 9064 LS  (low spin) in a 9.5 or 10.5. They have an ALDILA Rip Stock Shaft in Alpha and Gamma Versions - google for the difference - and at $149 or less, you've got a driver for that swingwpeed of yours - 10.5 of loft will give you less sidespin but more backspin - it all depends on your swing.

That driver has a lot of good reviews.

I mean, the RazrHawk is long but that's not your issue. And it is funky looking with a funky feel. But then, we're all different.

Good luck.

May I reccomend the Razr Fit. Can't go wrong with it. Or Rocketballz, or AMP. Those are miracles. But mostly Razr Fit.

Thanks everyone.  I think I'm going to get the Razr Hawk off my buddy (less expensive than buying new) and get in some lessons this summer.  Also just have to play more.  Thanks again for the input.

  • 1 year later...
I had the same problem with my drives...contemplating weather to go with some thing more user friendly...it's not so much the equipment but how your swing is reacting to it as we'll.. I have a 10.5 degree TM burner 2.0 shaft length was 46' got it down to 43.5 and added some lead tape to hostel end of the shaft which made the club heavier so my tendencies with lighter club was to pick it instead of focusing on my shoulders in backswing which leads to over the top...after these adjustment and concentrating only on tempo I'm hitting atleast 7-8 fairways in round compared to barely hitting 1-2 per round...so go with what you have...If you heart is set on buying a new one...don't just go and buy the most adjustable...Try PING Anser 12 degree with +.5 setting reg shaft the best looking and easiest to find fairway with...I'm waiting for the price to go low and that's the one I'm getting
