Jerry Rice: NFL great. But marginal golfer.

Have read Jerry is trying to find the retirement hobby and has chosen professional competitive golf.  Too bad.  Shot 86 the first day, then went 7 over for the front nine on the 2nd day.  Did not make cut.  Have to believe it's his short game that's not up to snuff.

He's been a sponsor of the tourney for a few years.  Done good some years and not so good others, but that's why he gets to play at stonebrae.

Over all he has said that his game is not up to the task.  But he loves golf!

They broke the mold when they made Jerry Rice.

He's definitely been playing a ton of golf lately.......... his current index is 1.1, but he has no grand illusions of playing as a pro.  he still keeps a HC for one...LOL

He just likes to compete, and if a mini-tour or Nationwide will let him play for publicity on a sponsors exemption....he will.

At least his caddy didn't use a laser measuring device this time. Celebs playing in tour events usually starts the "hey he is taking spots away from good players" debate, but I think they need to promote their event. All the advertising they did here was Jerry Rice and Steve Elkington are playing, blah blah... I have seen Jerry play a few times at a course in South San Jose and he can play. But it is a lesson at how much better a touring pro is than a 1 handicap.

I would say a handicap of 1 is a little better than marginal.

Anyway, hopefully he can settle for being hands down the greatest receiver in NFL history...

Marginal is relative. A 1 cap in the regular world is at the top of the heap, but in the competitive world it won't pay the bills.

Huh? This morning I was watching The Morning Drive, and they said Jerry was like 20 over par in last weekends tourney. Are you guys sure he is a 1? They also had that guy from Dancing with the Stars last week on the TMD show, and he is a 4, and was ribbing Jerry about his double bogey or something like that.

How the heck would a 1 HC turn into 20 over par in 2 days just in the Nationwide Tour Event? Those courses aren't that hard?

Why wonder he can't keep up. In fact, how is he a 1HC with that driving distance? I can hit my 3WD easily that long or longer.

Actually a 240 average is not that bad. That takes into account his good, bad, and horrible drives and you could easily be a 1. I guess the point is that a 1 cap on a PGA set-up is not in the same as the talent that is competing or even making the cut on a regular basis. Golf on that level is on the other side of scratch and I would venture to say that an 8 is closer to a 1 than a 1 is to a +3. Seriously, those guys playing on the Nationwide are that good.

Maybe the question should be why are you a 14 handicap when you easily hit a 3w 240? There's a lot more to the game than driving distance plus those courses generally are more difficult than you standard country club or public course. Especially the greens which are usually on the faster side of what a normal golfer would used to playing. I'm not saying Jerry has any business being out there other than it's good publicity but just because he didn't shoot a lower score doesn't mean he can't play.

Btw, where exactly was it reported that Rice is actually attempting to make a new career out of competitive golf?  This is just his tournament and the only event he has ever played in...  he's been doing it for several yaers.

The Nationwide golfers I know are about +4 to +5, and some missed the cut and some made it but none had a high finish. The cut was +3 (or +4) so add 6 to Jerry's score for each round (+5 versus 1) and he could easily be +16 or so above the guys who made the cut. Plus Stonebrea is a course where when you are hitting it bad it can be an awful day. Add in weather, Thursday and Friday it rained off and on and then some wind and that course is cold and and very tough.

The 240 is also not an accurate representation. We had a good deal of rain so there was no roll. So that is 240 carry, not after roll.

I am not saying Jerry could play on tour but he didn't do anything different than I would expect a 1 handicap to do.

Because there's golf & then there's tournament golf. Totally different.

Never forget...... a 1HC is 100 times worse than a minitour pro................that is a fact.  The difference between skill levels is as wide as the Grand Canyon.  No comparison.............

Knocking it around at home for a 72 cannot be remotely compared to tourney golf.  Whole different game..........

Im not sure that you could call someone who is a 1 HC a, "marginal" golfer.  Sure, he's no tour pro but he's better than 99.999% of the people who are hating on him and saying that he's no good at golf.
