new club fitting?

a few questions for everyone?

im looking to get back into the golf stuff pretty heavy.

the last set of clubs i got was about 9-10 years ago and i was not fitted. im looking to build a whole new bag!

when i played i consistantly shot 83-86, broke 80 2 times while playing with the local golf course pro. i consioder my self a pretty good ball striker just never got real good at reading greens and putting so thats where i lost alot of strokes.

these are some of the clubs i have hit and looked at in the local stores.

Driver : titleist 910d2,  taylormade  R11s, taylormade superfast, want to try callaway fit

fairway wood : titleist 910 f 5 wood , taylormade R11s, want to try callaway, ping

hybrid : titlesit 910h, taylormade rescue, want to try ping

irons: ping g20 6-pw, maybe 5-pw havent decided , taylormade rocketballz, titleist ap1, ping i20

wedges : titleist vokey, cleveland

putter : i have a ping craz-e, but also like the ping karsten anser 2 thats what i had way back when !

I would like to be completely fit from driver to putter ! and from what i have looked and talked the places around here dont do much more than hit off a lie board, and also ask me how it feels and this is done in the cage at the particular store. I'm not sure what different shafts feel like nor know what to say when they ask other than i like it. And most of the time i like it because im in the store wanting to buy ya know!!!!!

so what is the proper way to go about fitting for this whole bag of goodies. i want the real deal for every club!

Well tonight I went to dicks sporting goods, and they have a very nice selection. Of course they don't carry ping nor titleist..... Didn't really realize that. Anyway!.. I took my old ping copper in with me and hit a couple different irons. All 7 ions just like mine. I hit taylormade r11, taylormade rbz, and cobra amp irons. Out of the 3 I felt most consistant with the cobra amp iron. Kinda like I feel with the g20's I hit the other day. But again I'm only gonna but irons from 6-pw. An the rbz ha a hybrid set of clubs. But then I tried the drivers. R11s, rbz, then the cobra amp. I tapes the heads and the cobra was very, very consistant. It had a rip stiff staff in it and 9.5 loft I think. Of course they couldn't fit for drivers no one was there. I really like the cobra alot. Any way thought that would be a good update. Also have pics of the driver faces I'm gonna post. Well today I went to a local private owned golf shop. A place where several have recommended to me here in town. I was fitted and then given 4 irons sets to choose from. Callaway razr black, ping i20, cobra amp, taylormade rbz. Well I first said no to the callaway razr x black, I didn't want the black finish because I have had black wedges and they turn finish after a while. So now down to 3 - ping, tm, cobra.... I really like the cobra...... So I first hit the rbz. 6 iron very consistant and 200yard very consistant. Straight and had some draw a few times. Then the cobra amp ... I liked it alot but man I couldn't hit that thing consistant for nothing. It was all over the monitor. So I then went back to the rbz and bam..... Right back in the money!!! So cobra must not be my fit. I did hit the callaway razr x for just seeing.... And it felt heavy in the head. Also it wasn't very consistant. Again picked up rbz for a few hits and bam .... Back in the money and some with a slight draw. Very nice!!! All in all I was very impressed with the rbz I was impressed wig how well I hit it and the results I was getting!!! So far the rbz get the nod... I'm goin back next week for other club stuff and will hit them again to check again.!!!! So that the update so far!

Good luck with your search!  Were all these clubs shafted the same?  If not, that can account for a huge difference between models, depending on which one (shaft) better suits your profile.

Rbz had it's rbz shaft cobra amp had it's cobra shaft callaway had the callaway shaft. Good thinking, I didn't even think about that! So I guess I need to go back and rethink the shafts. Each brand had it's own shaft. So maybe the rbz shaft fits me well. But if I had a similar type shaft in amp irons then they might be money also !!

Ok update , so I went back today to rehit the irons and I was still very consistant with the rbz over the others by far. Going with 6-pw! So then we hit some fairway woods... I hit rbz 5 wood stiff shaft. Solid and hot. My carry was 240 with 107 mph swing speed. And I stayed very consistant between 105-108 swing speed. Carry stayed around 240. Didn't like the r11s, ping g20 was ok, but rbz was by far all aroun better performer. Then to the hybrid--- I chose to go with a 4h and a 5h. They were the rbz with same stiff shaft. Swing speed around 99-100 consistantly. The 4h carried 220. And felt very good. I liked it. I had a slight draw with it but was very consistant launch and ball flight. And then drivers. Tried the ping g20. Nice!! Then cobra amp, cobra zL white version.... All had stiff shafts, 9.5 degree. And the cobra zL was awesome. Swing speed stayed at 114 mph and once or twice hit 117 mph. Ball carry was 280. The zL kept it from ballooning on me with the low kick shaft. Very consistant on monitor for launch and ball spin. And tracking and club through impact was great. Wedges gonna go with cleveland 588 forged 50, 54, 60. And have them bent for correct lie. Now I just need to decide what back to go with. After pricing all the clubs without a bag it was around 1976.00$.

i appreciate all your updates and was seeing if you would help me out with a few things.  I am 6'3 and i know i need a longer club then the set i am using. I have gone to a place and they recommended adding an inch to each club but i don't want to just add it, i want the club fitted originally instead of a piece placed in. I don't really notice the difference on my 3-5 which is why i can hit them so well. I don't use woods as i can't control them. however i hit my 3 iron well over 200 and straight so i can still compete on long holes. So my questions are regarding the irons.

I have a similar swing speed at about 105mph give or take. I have grown up using an older taylormade set so i guess i am leaning towards them. I was looking at the r11s (never tried them) but it seems you favor the rbz's is this true? i never really looked at them because i thought they were more for people looking to gain distance

Since i have a long swing and long stroke i am more looking for a forgivng club in the accuracy department then i am in getting any extra distance.

i haven't even gotten into the hybrids yet and am looking forward to it. However i am pretty broke so i ahve been saving up for a while for a set of irons and i will get the hybrids as i can afford them or perhaps as a gift. I have never played with them so thankfully i don't feel as though i can't live without them yet haha. im sure once i get one i will wonder why i went so long without one.

i know its tough to say much without knowing but anymore elaboration on the different irons you tested would be great!

I'm also about 6'3" and I have irons that are 3/4 inch over standard.  You need to get fit by a pro to make sure what works best for you because of the difference in arm length, stance, etc.

I haven't been looking at new irons because of distance. The reason I say that is I am 5'10. 225lbs. And have a driver swing speed of around 114mph, 5 wood swing speed of around 107, 6 iron speed of about 98 or so... I have plenty of power in my swing and ball striking. I was hunting irons with the most forgiveness. I was asked if I wanted forgiveness or accuracy?.... They sound similar but not really. I first wanted forgiveness but after hitting balls and letting 2 differnent club fitters watch. ( I got 3 seperate fitter opinions, and going for a 4 th this weekend) we decided accuracy would be better because I believe I could work on alingment and balance, minor flaws to reach forgiveness. I wanted a iron that I could strike the ball with the most accuracy of the club face..... I tried several different sets. G20 i20 cobra amp tm burner tm rbz callaway razr x I weeded callaway right off because I didn't wantthe black finish. I have always played ping and the g20 and I20 felt very similar. They were really nice and I liked them. Very consistant ball striking. Cobra amp I really wanted but after some hitting it varied all over the launch monitor. So I put it down. I liked the burner but I was thinking might as well get this years stuff! That's when I hit the rbz. Money everytime. 6 iron on monitor was very very consitant and carry showed 200yds give or take. I like them so I'm having the guy this weekend really see if that what is best. I'm gonna let him recommend and if they are I'm pulling the trigger on them. Getting 6-pw and 4,5 hybrid. My biggest thing is finding the driver and 5 wood that suit me best. With swing speeds of 114-117 I want to make sure the shaft will be correct. I can get plenty of distance with the right spin and launch and loft combo. These 2 clubs is what I worry on fit the most. That what gets me to the scoring area. The reason I went with 6- pw is I feel I control those clubs the best and the hybrids will just fall in line with fairway woods on ease of hitting with same or similar shafts. Gonna order Cleveland wedges offline and have them bent to proper lie for me.

get fitted for the driver too, but you'll probably need an X-flex or at least S for the driver with a swing speed like that, try lots of different models and find out what works best for you, they all have different feel and weights, you probably won't like most of the new "lightweight" drivers because you already swing fast you don't need any help with that, maybe a titleist or nike VR would be worth trying?

the TM R11 also has some heft to it and adjustability is nice to have too

If you're looking to build a whole new bag I would recommend getting fitted first, and having whoever you use to fit order your clubs directly from the manufacturer.

I would have done that if I would have known but I did not and put together a bag with clubs I got from ebay and then once I developed my swing and what not, I got fit and don't regret it at all. I can tell you right now that I hit solid shots wayyy more often now and love it.

Final update with purchase choices made!!!! Here are my final choices that were ordered today and paid for! Wedges- cleveland forged 588- 52,56,60 degree in differnet bounces to suit my uses. I will go back with them to check lie angle I need when my other clubs come in irons- ping g20 6-pw xtra stiff shaft hybrids- TM rbz 4 hybrid tour xtra stiff, 5 hybrid xtra stiff tour shaft. Fairway- TM rbz 3 high launch being bent to 17 degree with tour xtra stiff shaft. Did this to fill gap between driver and 4 hybrid. Didn't want a true 3 wood nor a true 5 because of gap differnce in distance since I was gonna be using one fw wood. But still good distance of tee and easy off the deck. Driver- TM rbz tour 9 degree with tour xtra stiff tour shaft. (120 mph swing speed) distance was 306 and a little roll after that. About 26 yards longer than any other I was fitted for. Putter- yes with custom weight which we are going to fit for when other clubs come in. Going to put a big fatso grip on it. So this is my new bag very excited haven't bought anything in 12 years. Wanting to get a fancy staff bag for cart riding and a stand bag for walking and range use. So gotta decide which ones to get that will look good hahahah!
