With Carl Pettersson winning his fifth pga tournament (same number of wins as Hunter Mahan and two more than Anthony Kim), he's gotta be up there for most wins that most don't know about. add Mark Wilson to the list

Prestige of the field is a factor, but so are being touted as an amateur or a rookie. Timing is a huge factor. I mean look at the events Steve Stricker's won. Not impressive on paper, but he at least "contends" in majors and his wins are typically before a major, not after them when all the hoopla is over for a week or two.

If Pettersson spelled his last name differently and looked like Brad Pitt instead of Mr. Stay Puff, he'd be more well known. Agree, timing is huge: The Heritage used to be a top tier event. Pettersson beat a really good field this weekend (Donald, Kuchar, Simpson, Laird, Els, Furyk, Snedeker, O'Hair, etc) But didn't get weekend pairings with any of them or have to fight them off down the stretch.

To be fair uttexas Petterson's wins seem to come at lower tier events. Greater Greensboro Open, Harbour Town, just events that are not all that well known. When he starts winning big events he will get some recognition. Mahan has won some big events like the match play and other WGC events. I personally love his swing. I think from P5 and beyond he has a fantastic move. He has some similarities to Duval. He has tons of shaft lean and swings left nicely. I am really surprised he has not contended more.

He needs to make the Ryder Cup team and contend in a couple majors or the Fed Ex. So does Mark Wilson. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what positions they can hit if they take the fewest strokes.  It helps if they sink a lot of putts!!!

I see it as a nice way to make a living. I would love to make a million or so a year, play golf for a living, and not have to sign autographs or get hounded in public. That has to be worth something.

Yep, Ryder Cup/President's Cup helps the Q rating. Pettersson should make the Ryder Cup European team this year. If Mark Wilson plays really well this summer, might make the U.S.A. team.

I wouldn't consider The Memorial a 'lower tier' event.

I love his swing too, especially the driver swing. He's like the anti-stack & tilt player - at setup he's well behind the ball & at the top he is so loaded against the right leg. Powerful.

In fact, going by WGR points, the Memorial was tied for first (with Riviera) as the strongest regular PGA event of 2011, and is near the top every year. By "regular," I mean excluding majors, the Players, WGCs, and FedEx Playoff events. The Memorial awarded over twice as many points as events like the Valero and John Deere, which are what I would call "lower tier" events.

I need a map here - what are you guys talking about with the Memorial?

It's one of the events Pettersson won, and therefore it shows that he has won against strong fields.

Yeah, good call on the Memorial. I had forgotten about that.

The thing about his swing, is like Bruce Leitzke you wouldn't teach it, but they both do things right when it counts. Not sure I would call it anti-S&T;, but that is not the point of this thread.

Rickie Fowler is probably a lot better known than Petterson because he's in commercials. Yet Fowler has yet to get an actual win and has few good finishes. Ryan Seacrest is also better known than myriad people in the television industry who actually serve a purpose. That's how fame works.

Seacrest is famous because he worked on the top rated show for the last 10 years.  Anyone that had Seacrests job would likely be famous if they held onto it.

Rickie is famous because the PGA made a decision to promote him to attract the male 18-25 and female demographic.  Rickie has yet to deliver the game to match the hype.

Petterson isn't as famous because the PGA hasn't shown an interest in promoting him and he hasn't won enough big events to gain name recognition like Phil, Bubba, Rory, etc.  Even on Sunday you could tell the announcers were hoping Zach Johnson would close the round with birdies to challenge for the win because they knew no one really cared about Petterson winning.   The PGA Tour site didn't even have a picture of Petterson up or any mention of his victory on the front page of their site after 3:00 this afternoon, it was almost a non-event.

Do you think that anyone except diehard golf fans would have heard of Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker or Bill Haas?

Or any one of 50 other tournament winners ovr the last 5 years? Non golf fans have heard of Tiger Woods, John Daly, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

There's also a good case for Mickelson, but I agree.

And you also forgot Happy Gilmore.
