86 is one of my better rounds of the year. I'v never broken 80. But, how I did it killed me. To have putted so poorly, it hurt. On two different holes I hit a GIR and 4 putted! I hit the practice green immediately, and even played a few extra holes to iron the kinks out. I know I can putt better, but it didn't happen today. The upside is that I did birdie two of the three par fives with tap ins after good eagle attempts. It would appear the long putts really hurt me, having left all of them short. (Long takeawaway leading to a deceleration or bottoming out the putter on the down swing) I seem to be putting well inside of six feet which is where most of my putts are. I guess I need to add lag putting to my practice? I need a bigger living room! :~(

If you four putted, that just screams distance control to me. That could be the greens got faster on you, or your stroke tempo is off. My distance control sucks when i jab at the ball and don't keep things smooth. I putt best when i just let things go and the putter moves evenly through out the putt.

Very similar to my round Sunday. Shot 96, my 2nd ebst round ever, with 44 putts. I'm not a great putter, but I usually average 36-38, so was very frustrating. I had two holes in a row where I hit GIR in 2 and then 4 putt. I also drove the green in 2 on a par 5 for the first time ever, then proceeded to 3 putt. Encouraged by my ballstriking, but frustrating cause I could've possibly broken 90.

On the practice greens before my rounds, my warmup is always distance control. I will walk off 3,5,7,9,11 full strides and putt three balls from all of those lengths. My goal is to get all of those putts within a foot past the hole. Tapatalking, sorry for typos and autocorrect.

I had a similar 85 today.  I was +12 after 8 holes, and only +3 after that. ....and I didn't hit a single fairway on the course. (Excellent mid-irons - terrible driver)

Glad its not just me!!! I shot a 51 last week on the front with (2) 4 putts and (2) 3 putts. Gross. Putting practice will be a focal point for me.

Sometimes the opposite happens.  Yesterday I could not hit a ball to save my life.  My timing was off.  I played the front 9 of a hard course (135 slope) in 45 with 13 putts (which is good for me).

Still waiting for that day when it ALL works!

Take 3 practice swings while looking at the hole your eyes will tell you how hard to swing then set up to the ball and putt.

I Learned this from a PGA Master Professional.

I'm not completely opposed to the idea, but it represents a major change for me. 3 years ago I read Putt to Win and have been using Stockton's no practice putt approach to putting. On a side note, I don't practice enough. After that round I put in some time and have seen much better putting. Not to make excuses, but the course in question has a practice green that is only two years old and is way too slow leaving me to often avoid it as it does not represent the greens on the course. I just wish I had the putting that day. It would have been nice to break 80 so early in the year.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
