New irons advice

I am in the process of researching/buying new irons and wanted some outside opinions. A little bit about me, im a smaller guy (5'5" 125lbs) i play at a 13 hcp with an average score around 88. I play at least once a week, but in the summer it will be 2 or 3 times a week. Chipping and putting is the strongest aspect of my game and ball striking on irons is my weakest. I hit my 8 iron 150 with 10 yard gaps in between clubs. My 6 iron swing speed is 85mph (mizuno shaft analyzer). The Mizuno fitting recomended a Dynalite Gold XP S300.

I currently use Nike CCi cast 3-AW with Dynalite Gold S300. I bought these on ebay 4 years ago because they were cheap and it was never custom fitted. I am looking for something that is in between between GI and "players" irons. I have tested AP2, MP 53, Nike Pro Combo CB, and Callaway Razr X Tour. I was also thinking of maybe doing a combo set of Taylormade CB and MC and I also like the i15/20. I did not like the AP2, too much feedback on mishits and too expensive, so I have ruled those out. I was not a fan of the Razr X Tour either, they just didnt feel right to me. From the ones I have hit, the Nikes and Mizunos are on top.

Do you have any recomendations, reviews, suggestions for any of these irons or ones in this category?

How did the Nikes Feel where you hitting alot of mishits and bad feedback?  Have you tried a few more game improvement irons apposed to players irons?

I'd suggest Ping and get them fitted for your swing. But you need to go with what you think is best for you.

Thanks for the input. I understand that some of these clubs are probably out of my range, but when i hit the Nikes they didnt seem as penalizing as expected from a players type club. There is a Demo day at my club in a week and i plan on hitting pretty much every club available.

Ya when I switched over to players irons I was so scared because of all this "miss hit" shananigans, found out as long as you are hitting within the size of a little bigger than a quarter you are gonna be ok.  And complete misses still aren't as bad as you would think.  As long as you aren't having any unrealistic expectations (which you aren't as you have already hit them) you will be fine with any type of iron

Does anyone play with Nike Pro Combo Cb's? I would love to hear what you have to say.

Sorry, I don't but I have to throw in a pitch for Cleveland's new 588 MB irons. You can buy a split CB/MB set also and they are very clean looking and a pleasure to hit. I had to wait along time before they came in, but I probably have one of the first sets in my city. I chose the MB despite advice from everyone, including my golf pro, that blades were too hard to hit at my skill level. These clubs were fit for me and that makes all of the difference in the world. I hit them straighter and longer than my previous set of Callaway X20 Tours and I'll do good to keep the impact under the size of a Half-Dollar day in and day out. I still get distance out of lesser hits and I'm  convinced that most of the advertisement for any major golf iron is 90 percent Bovine waste. Choose the quality brand that you like. Get the correct length irons and have your lie angles fitted and checked. Correct fit advice is not golf propaganda and I'll never buy another set without the ability to Tailor them to my physical needs.

Cleveland is always a brand that I forget about, thanks for reminding me of these. They are great looking irons, but i would never get MB. Cleveland will be at my club in a week so i will give these a try.

If he struggled with AP2s there is no way the 588s will be suited for him. The 588 CBs offer a 2-iron. That alone should say something about the type of player they're aimed at.

Pros and delusional amateurs?

If your iron play is your weakness, Id suggest staying away from a player's iron and going with more of a GI iron.  Players' irons are great but you need to hit the ball solidly with them.  Brand isnt as important (whatever you like is fine) but what does matter is a clubhead with a deep cavity, wide sole and a bit of offset.  You also might want to consider going with regular flex shafts instead of the stiffs you currently have.  Its going to help you hit the ball higher and give you more confidence with your irons.  Thats comes back to being fitted for clubs though.  The clubfitter will tell you what the right shaft for you is.

Actually AP2's are not that bad, there pretty user friendly.. 588's are a bit tougher to hit. Personally, i would rather get the AP2's because there a bit more forgiving, i like a little leeway there, just incase.. Nothing like be penalized because the club was just a bit less forgiving..

Exactly - I carry a 2-iron but it's mostly for the nostalgia. Nothing wrong with them in principle.

Heck Tiger Woods doesn't carry a 2 iron most of the time now.  I found it funny that they kept talking about his 2 iron stinger at Bay Hill when he was hitting a 3 iron every time.

I thought he had 3 woods in the bag.  Doesn't he carry a 5 wood most times?  Alright, alright...I'll stop dragging the thread OT.

To the OP, I'd get the more forgiving clubs.

My Cleveland 2-iron is a SGI version - easier to hit than a blade 7-iron. I'm old school and stubborn, but I'm not an idiot.

I don't think you're an idiot.  I just think you're a bit grumpy.
