I'm wanting to get a new putter, haven't really decided on anything in particular, but my brother is suggesting picking up a used Futura. I use a 33" putter. I'm only seeing 34" and 35" putters available, with a few that are apparently 1/2 inch shorter. A website FAQ for the Futura putters claims they will not shorten them more than 1/2 inch due to its balance and feel. Is this bunk? Will I give up that much by shortening it more than 1/2" Can't you add more weight, if really necessary? Or should i just get a different putter?

I also use a 33" Scotty - I have both a Newport 2 and a Red X - both are 350gm. The Futura only comes in a 34" and 35" off the shelf. If you have access to a Proshop (with Titleist clubs), ask the pro if he can do a customer order for a 33.5" Futura. If the Cameron website says 34"/35" only, it's unlikely they will do a 33" one. When I was considering the Detour (it only came in 34"/35"), my Pro said he can get a 33" custom from Cameron. In fact, I saw many 33" Detours on ebay.

To answer your question, I'm guessing Scotty believes that the shorter the putter, the heavier the clubhead. His weights are 330gm (35"), 340gm (34"), and 350gm (33"). To the best of my knowledge, weight can only be added to the Red X line, not the Futura putters. Worst case, buy a 34" putter and have an inch cut off, and then add some lead tape to increase weight. Or as Erik said in his review of the Futura -- just grip down !

To answer your question, I'm

Yeah, it keeps the swingweight somewhat constant.

Worst case, buy a 34" putter and have an inch cut off, and then add some lead tape to increase weight.

I used to like a 33" putter, but I like gripping down on a 34" putter instead lately. Then on long putts I can go up an extra inch to help get a little extra oomph.

Ok. Well, I don't want to grip down, 33" is still just a little long but usable for me. 34"-35" is going to be uncomfortable. I guess I can cut it down and take my chances. It doesn't seem like rocket science to figure out the weight of the 35" vs. the 34" and interpolate what a 33" should weigh...or for that matter weigh the portion of the shat that is cut off and add it to the club head.

...or I could buy from a manufacturer that sells shorter clubs...

I have a 35" and feel choking up a little gives you a little more feel, especially on those 5 footers for birdie when the pressure is on

Ok, so there are a few choker-uppers...doesn't this go against the grain of club fitting? And I have tried the longer putters, I'm not tall enough. The grip is jabbing me in the gut/ribs, or I have to adjust my alignment/loft to make it work. Would make more sence to me to use what fits.

Technically, no, because you rarely grip any club at the absolute end of the grip anyway.

And really, who gets fit for putters? Putting is about confidence, not what model shaft the putter has. Though I do believe that those with a consistent stroke (mostly limited to pros anyway) benefit from being fit, most people benefit more from choosing a putter that inspires them to be confident.

About three years ago, MacGregor signed the putter maker Bobby Grace to make putters for their brand. I had thought about buying a Bobby Grace "Amazing Grace" putter from Grace's website because you could order it shorter than 33", as well as having a custom lie and weight. When I got ready to order, I discovered he had signed with MacGregor. His first putters from MacGregor were essentially the "Amazing Grace" but carrying a different name, which referred to the size of the two putters: 5.4k and 6.4k. I called MacGregor, located in Albany, Ga., and because the Grace contract was so new, the customer service rep couldn't give me much information about customization. She said, "Call this telephone number and I'm sure the folks there can help you." So I called the number she gave me and guess what? It was the Grace putter factory. I spoke with Grace, told him my height and preferences. He made me a 6.4k, 32", 3 degree upright, heavier than normal putter, which I have and use to this day. There are adjustable weights in the bottom of the putter and he sent me a set of the lighter weights. But I've kept the heavier weights in the putter head. While the models were updated a couple of years ago, even those have been discontinued. However, they may be available from some retailers at a substantive discount. They also had adjustable weights in the head, so that, if you were able to secure one, even at 35", you could still have the shaft cut down and adjust the weight of the head accordingly. You might even go to the Macgregor website, if all this falderall interests you, get their telephone number, ring them up and see if they still have stock on any of the discontinued models. As the Future was mentioned in an earlier post on this thread, I would also add that the Grace putter head is made of aircraft grade aluminum, with a beryillium insert. Good luck in your search.
