Talking to a guy who does club repair stuff he said some players (usually tour and better players) have extra tape (under the grip like when re-gripping) put under where their right hand is so it will be thicker. Does anybody here do it? When asked why they would do that the guy pretty much said when you get as good as those guys it helps you or something. After seeing stuff about the "trigger finger" I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

3 layers of masking tape under the right hand. I think the theory is that is helps the squaring up of the clubface at impact. It might have something to do with helping the right hand, I'm not sure.

Similarly, I put on some Pro Release grips http://www.feelwedges.com/Pro_Release_s/25.htm on my wedges, and have been pleased with the results.  It helps my wedge shots to fly lower and eliminates the weak fades.

I'm a long ways from a tour player... but have had enough clubs and grips to figure out what I like.  I just regripped my irons to in the basement this spring to test this out.

My clubs have 2 extra wraps under the whole grip, and 5 total wraps under the right hand.  I've normally played midsize with 3 wraps (large hands), but like this quite a bit better.  The extra width on the lower part of the grip improves feel on shorter clubs and finesse shots.  So far, I like it quite a bit.  Cheap and easy to do, as well.

Went to a GolfWorks club repair school recently, and the trainer covered this option. He had years of OEM clubmaking experience before becoming a trainer. He said grips were thinner at bottom because shafts were thinner away from butt, and the idea that a narrower right-hand grip prevented centrifugal from pulling the club out of the golfer's hands.

Anyway, he said the centrifugal force thing was not really a danger because the fingers dig into the grip at impact enough to secure the club.

He suggested two benefits of extra wraps under the right hand (bottom hand) portion of the grip:

  • More even grip pressure, because the grip is not so much thinner under the right hand.
  • For wedges, players making partial shots can choke up more on the shaft without tightening R hand too much because of super-thin grip.

I tried R-hand tape buildup on a new driver I built, and I seem to have more even grip pressure with the hands. (Only problem - total club weight a bit too light, and I tend to overswing.)

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
