  1. 1. Is it smart for Tiger to not participate in press conferences during the Wells Fargo Championships?

I was watching the news last night here in Charlotte and they did a segment on Tiger Woods at this weekends Wells Fargo Championship and his opposition to the media. He is not participating in any press conferences and is directing all questions to his personal website, twitter, and facebook accounts.

I can understand if the media is causing mental issues with his game, but to cut it off completely? I figured I would write about this and see what the golf community thinks about this.

I was a fan of Tiger, but with so many other great golfers still in the series and new ones showing up every weekend I find it hard to keep any loyalty towards him.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it a good idea to push of the press while you try and re-focus your golf mindset?

He's a real weird dude with that kind of stuff. Feinstien had a great article about this type of behavior from Woods. Basically Tiger is bigger than the game and does whatever he wants. The PGA is spineless and lets him.

I guess he's tired of having to face the music when it comes to the immature way he has chosen to conduct himself on and off the course.

I like it.... I think it's cool that he will be on a "webcam" and answering questions from the real fans...Majority of the sports media are real tools and ask ridiculous questions that aren't relevant.

He has always had a love/hate relationship with the media, I think this is probably more about showing them up than anything.

The outrage is limited to the wags that cover golf for a living.  They can pretend all they want that Tiger's absence from press day hurts the sponsors, but in my opinion that is ridiculous.  The sponsor gets Tiger in the pro-am, they get him in the field, and assuming he contends (likely), they will have the TV ratings on the weekend as well.

I have some sympathy for the John Feinstein's of the golf world, but I think the angst directed at Tiger is selfish in nature.  Tiger does NOT need the help of the golf writers to do what he wants to do, which is to compete in tournaments and rack up endorsement dollars.  They, however, need him because he gives them something to write about each and every week.  He's sick of answering questions about Hank Haney, about his personal failures, etc, and they apparently believe he "owes" them his complete cooperation and candor.

I am critical of Tiger when acts poorly, but I fully support him on this one.

Has he issued an official "boycott" statement about the media? I saw this interview yesterday, but I didn't see anything about him refusing to do any media interviews anymore.  What is his official stance?

That's a pretty one-sided assessment of the situation.  Tiger Woods has to answer more aggressive, accusatory, irrelevant and asinine questions than any other player on tour.  The media themselves are as much accountable for his apprehension in dealing with them as he is in causing controversy surrounding his own image.  When the media stops acting immature and petty, they can absolve themselves of blame.

I just read a couple of the outraged articles about his video in lieu of a presser.  Funny stuff.  The writers are acting like babies.

Tiger has made hundreds of millions of dollars off of the public's desire to watch him play golf.  This type of invasive questioning comes with the career he chose.

I liked it. As people said in the other thread, we got much more candor and information out of Tiger in the video he made on his website where he fielded fan questions. I hope he does that every week. Plus we don't have to sit through the boring, repetitive, and stupid questions that some of the media guys ask.

A bit strange to completely cut off the media like that, but I don't mind really. His own webcam videos are better than the press conferences anyways. I watch a few here and there, but quickly get bored and start surfing instead. Perhaps this can give the media guys something to think about and make them reconsider the approach of a press conference. I doubt it though.

Good probing questions about if he has a chance to win, whether he has made an albatross, or which Players was his favorite.  He should have just skipped the presser and not put out a video of him fielding softball questions.

Lusetich just released an article on how Tiger skipping press conferences is a bad idea. I imagine ALL media will write negativity on Tiger's decision. Personally, I like what Tiger is doing. I'm tired of the media asking him a question, then someone asks the question in a different format, and another, etc. It gets boring. I still think he should do post-round interviews since they are short and to the point while the round is still fresh in his mind.

Best Regards,
Ryan

I learned something from this video. I can't say that about 95% of his press conferences.

I find press conferences in general to be pretty useless too.

I think they need to kick him out of the tour. I mean he's not that popular any more. Specially with the females. LOL

He's basically sucked Titleist balls the past 3-4 years. Who needs him.

I think it is like watching paint dry. They are beyond boring and he gives nothing answers. I think this works out for everyone. He doesn't like to be there, I don't like to watch him do it, so it works out perfectly.

I wonder what the Golf Channel is going to do without analyzing every sentence out of Tiger's mouth. This is bad for them.

Let me end the suspense for you: they spent most of their time last night on golf news segments asking golf experts their thoughts on the matter, and they all basically bashed him for it.
