After getting screwed over by Surestix golf, I'm looking for a new set of clubs, the whole bag. I found KZG and Wishon. I like small companies. Does anyone here have an experience, good or bad, with either company?

Been playing Wishon irons for 4 years, and a Wishon driver and 4-wood for 2+ years.  I'm very happy with the design and craftsmanship of Wishon clubs.  I believe that finding a good fitter was a major factor in my satisfaction.  I'm sure there are other brands that are as well made (but probably not better) and that would perform as well if the weight, length, lie, MOI and shaft flex fit my swing like the Wishons do.

I play a Wishon driver and 4 wood with Wishon shafts.  They both kicked "name brand" clubs out of the bag because they simply out performed the others.  I also really like the GRT (gradual roll technology) of the woods.  I play Maltby (Golfworks) irons, but Wishon has a couple different iron heads that I want to try in the future.  I also play a Maltby 3 hybrid, but want to give the Wishon 331H hybrid head a try too.

For 14 years, I played a component set of irons. The heads were made by the company Pro Tour, and were basically a clone of the Ping Eye2 model. PT eventually lost a lawsuit to Ping and had to quit making them.

The clubmaker custom-fit me, and offered me several iron head varieties. The Pro Tour Blacks cost $5 a head more than other offerings, but the fitter recommended them for their durability. I got them, shafted with TT Dynalite stiff.

The PTBs turned out to be very durable, and often I shot in the 80s with them. I swapped them out in 2008 for two reasons: I couldn't handle stiff shafts any more, and the high-launch Dynalites tended to balloon the ball on the short irons.

Until about 2005, the PTBs held their own in competition against name-brand irons I tried. A good experience overall.

So, here are things to consider when buying clubs and components made by small, regional companies:

  • Are the clubs reasonably durable?
  • Are you buying them assembled by the company, or are you getting them from a custom fitter?
  • If you are getting them from a local fitter...

* Does the fitter know how to mix, match and trim the components to best fit your swing?

* What is the fitter's skill level and quality control?

Finally, get a copy of the spec sheet for the clubs so you know the loft gaps. In my PTBs, I spend about 4 years with my full PW shots often coming up a little short in expected distance. Turned out I was dealing with the following distance gaps:

  • 8i...40⁰
  • 9i...44⁰
  • PW...50⁰
  • SW...56⁰

Once I knew this, I started gripping up on a 9i when distance was a little beyond the PW.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I am playing Henry Gritffits Irons, wedges and Driver.  I am very happy with them.  I think a big part of my satisfaction is because they were properly fitted.

If you are thinking budget this is not the way to go.

I'm a very happy Wishon convert. Of course, getting a good custom fit with any brand gives a huge advantage over off-the-rack. But I just love the way my Wishons feel more than any other brand I've tried. On top of that, when I had a question about one of their new clubs I was considering I wrote to the customer service e-mail and got a prompt response back...from Tom Wishon himself. And not a perfunctory form letter either, but a detailed and thorough answer to my questions. He also answered my follow-up. I love that he's determined not to put his name on any product that doesn't meet his standard. I intend to keep playing Wishons as long as he stays that dogmatic. Best of luck, whichever brand you go with. I like the idea of those small component companies, personally, and have rarely heard anything bad about the most famous ones like Wishon, Bang, et al.

Bag It:

3-Wood Wishon 525 F/D, 13*, Matrix Studio 65gm, Golf Pride Dual Compound
Hybrid: Wishon "321", 24*, MSF 85 HB, Winn DSI
Irons: Wishon 770CFE, Matrix Studio 74gm, Winn DSI

Putter: Odyssey DFX 2-Ball

Bag: Some big, honkin', ridiculous overkill of an Ogio cart bag with more pockets than I have teeth.

I've played Wishon for several years and am currently bagging  a 949MC 4 wood and two 785HF hybrids. Tom Wishon makes great stuff and is truly one of the most respected designers in the industry. I am a hobbyist club builder and Wishon stuff is the highest quality available and is as good or better than any OEM.

As others have said, it really is all about the fitting.  Here's a video from Dana Upshaw who is one of the best in the business talking about what to expect from a fitting. Too bad Dana is in Atlanta area or I'd go to him for a fitting.

I'd also suggest you look for a qualified fitter on the Association of Golf Fitting Professionals http://www.agcpgolf.com/locator/

I did a quick look and found this gentleman in IL.

Have not used the KZG product but have hit the Wishon fairway woods. Actually ordered then for a golf partner from Wishon and he had them assembled by a local club maker to include wishon shafts and gris. I would compare these woods with any of the major manfactures equipment. You can check out the Wishon web site and you can find a club make in your state and maybe close to you.
