It seems that I have a slight tendancy to hit the ball kinda fat, or strike the ground just before i strike the ball. I shot around an 80, and if I could quit having those 5 shots a round where I kinda chunk it my score would drop considerably. Any advice? I play the ball in my middle of my stance, maybe slightly forward. I focus on the top part of the ball. any advice?? thanks!

If you are shooting around 80, you can't be chunking the ball too bad. I find I start to hit the ball a little fat if my hands aren't in the correct place during contact.

Keeping your eye on the ball is a start..

try moving the ball up even further to the front, that way when you swing the club will make contact with the ball when the club is starting to come up on the forwardswing making sure you get underneath the ball.

Thanks for the replies. You see my "chunks" arent that bad, they just cause me to leave the ball short. There is the rare occasion that I will chunk one pretty good, but not to often. I am just looking for that crisp clean contact more often.

When I have a case of the fats/thins I reassess my posture. Too hunched and I end up chunking the ball. Too high and I end up thinning it. (Sounds kind of logical actually unlike a lot of other things in golf....)

A good subject - one I have been a real victim of. Managed to sort it out by reading a lot of Dave Pelz. A LOT OF DAVE PELZ!!!! Body movement is usually responsible for lousy contact, especially on short irons. But what kind of body movement? Usually a spine which is not "over" the ball at contact, but is somehow curving toward the target - allowing contact to be with the big ball before the small ball. Try "dominating" the ball with your spine (on the range).....to do this, keep your chin UP through the turn back as well as through, and feel consciously that your centre (spine) is ever so slightly flagside of the ball at impact......the idea of a "proud" spine is emphasised by having your belt buckle point AT the ball at address, with that chin high! Try it. Chunky shots adieu!!! Good luck! This is REALLY hard to take to the course because there has to be a lot of thought going on, in order to make it part of your routine....and under pressure we usually all resort to our brainless "before" swings.....but keep me in mind when you find out how damn easy it really is!

Based on your handicap you are certainly a better player than I am, but isn't that a classic "scoop" move. I was always of the opinion that a descending blow down and through the ball leads to solid, consistent ball-striking (with irons anyway).

But hey, I'll try anything!!

Put the ball further back in your stance (2 or 3 inches to the right of square). It will allow you to hit down on the ball, hitting the ball before you hi the ground (ideally, the divot will be in front of your ball). It'll also impart more backspin, which means the ball was fly through the air moe accurately.
