Just read it on ESPN.com - apparently a wrist injury. Wonder if he'll recover in time for the US Open....so much for the # 1 v/s 2 showdown.

Maybe this withdraw will allow him to recover in order to compete at the US Open?

He said he played Oakmont last week and aggravated it hitting balls out of that deep rough. LOL!

I'm sure he has screwed up a lot of fantasy golf teams out there.

Can't help but wonder if the swing change has anything to do with it.

Well if Phil was practicing shots out of the rough at Oakmont and it's already U.S. Open height then I don't care if he's Arnold Freakin' Schwarzenegger, that rough can mess up your wrists!

I got to play Hazeltine back in 1991 about 10 days after the U.S. Open was held there and the rough was still brutal. I remember one shot from the rough where I hit a wedge as hard as I could just to get back to the fairway and barely made it out. That stuff was like hitting into a bale of hay.

To those wondering if he'll be healthy enough to compete at the U.S. Open, I believe he will be. BUT, I don't know if he'll mentally be ready - if he faces a few nasty lies in the rough, is he going to rethink his injury or is he going to go after the ball full-bore, ignorant of the injury he suffered only two weeks before from the same rough?

Definetely agree, this wrist injury will unfortunately take some wind out of his sails at exactly the wrong time.
