I saw him flub a shot in the sand trap today...it's especially satisfying to know that even that happens to the world number 1 every so often.

Golf offers no escape. Golf is Alcatraz. That little ball will beat you up and leave you making the turn on your knees with no remorse.

I remember my grandfather who watches golf every thursday friday and sunday telling me that tiger had a big problem with the switch to graphite. I remember him saying he couldn't control the shots anymore. I may be wrong but I just remember that a few years back

Short game is great, unless it takes you 4 shots to get to your short game!!

Golf is a whole rounded game. You can never be successful JUST having a long game, or JUST having a short game. The reason Tiger can get out of trouble is NOT necessarily his short game. I wouldn't consider a 220 yard 3 iron that hooked 70 yards around trees from the left rough a short game shot. He is great because he can avoid disaster by pulling shots out of his @$$. Everytime I hear someone say "Drive for show, putt...." you know the rest, it makes me laugh, as they are lining up their first putt for double. You cannot get great at putting or chipping and rely on that to score.
I would say that most amatuers lose most of their strokes on long to mid irons.

I will be the first to root against Tiger on Sundays, but I sure can appreciate his imaginative shots!!

Yes, Tiger has admitted he had a problem with the graphite shafts. He used that steel shafted Titleist PT-15 3 wood for a long time because of it.

This also proves the grip it and rip it mentality of todays game and highlights the groove issues on irons as well.

Agreed. On occasion, I'll rack up a big score not because I hit a ball out of bounds or because I four-putted, but because I hit a topper in the fairway, followed up by another serious mishit.

I also agree, and it's why I keep a stat called "other". "Other" are the number of stokes left after I subtract my tee shots (18) and total putts from my total score.

If you hit every green in regulation, your "other" stat would be 18 strokes. If you are a bogey golfer, that number will be a lot closer to 36. Anything over 36......well, at least you were outside, and hopefully it was a nice day.

Pretty good idea. Think I might try that one. Thanks..

Tiger makes up for that with his good putting and approach shots.

Surely it would not be 18 if you hit every green in regulation. On a par 3 the other score would be 0 if you hit the green, while on a par 5 it would be 2 if you hit the green.

Anyway back to tiger. Drive for show, putt for dough. If you hit a bad drive then you can make up for it with the next shot, but if you hit a bad putt that is a shot that can never be saved.
Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.

That stat may be misleading. If you included the first cut of rough which is like the fairway at most muni courses he would probably have a better ranking. When I watch him he seem to just miss the fairway by an inch or two.

I could be wrong, but I'd play from that cut all day and I'm sure Tiger would too.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
