Tips on making varsity high school golf team?

I love golf and I will be a sophomore this year. I will almost already guarrentee myself a spot on the normal JV team, but I want to get on varsity. Oh and that 20 handicap is from last year. I completely revamped my swing and got almost all new clubs that fit me better. I believe I could be a 10-15 handicap which is almost good enough already to get on varsity, but I want to get better. Any tips?  Any little things that you noticed help take shots off? By the way, chipping is my strong part. I can get it within 2 feet almost everytime. I almost chipin (on edge of cup) 2 times every 9 holes so I think Im okay there.

I would suggest that you concentrate on actual scores rather than predicting what your handicap might be.

Understand that if you are 3 over par after 7 holes and have  doubles on the last two holes you have shot 7 over for the 9, not that you were close to par. Putt out all the time and focus on the shot at hand.

I would guess that you have to qualify for the team by playing and scoring, so work on course management and trying to eliminate the big scores.

And as far as chipping goes.......come on.............

An honest understanding of your strengths and weaknesses is a very important part of improving your game.

Haha thanks! And as for chipping: That part is completely true. The only problem? I barely have to chip cause I have to either pitch or putt so its hard to gauge when but when the time comes Im good.

As far as making varsity I would add, have a great attitude.  The words yes coach should be the first ones to come to your lips.

I think intimidation is key.  Perhaps on the first tee, tear a phone book in half or inflate a hot water bottle with your mouth until it explodes.  After such a display I would imagine the rest of the guys trying out would top their tee shots.

I have a few tips for you that can help. Learn to not count up your score until you're done, during tryouts if your score is in your head, your ball will be in the trees. Practice your putting, almost half your shots each round are around the green, so half your practice should be around the green. A lot of younger players only want to go to the range and hit driver. When playing on the driving range and your hitting at a target try to a hit a fade to it, a draw to it, a straight shot, a knock down. Best way to warm yourself up and get ready for any shot you have to make on the course. Spend atleast 45 minutes a day on your short game and I promise you, you will cut 5 shots off your game by the end of next month.

trying to play like a pro can only help him, to only aspire to get to varsity golf is not enough.

As a four-year Varsity player, with three years at number one, the less seriously I took myself at practice and matches, the better I played.

So he should not suggest his chipping is really good because Tiger and Phil would never do that, right?
