I tried out a Cobra AMP driver (9.5, Stiff) a couple of days ago and I absolutely loved it (in the simulator, of course). However, I really don't care to pay the new price on a driver. I have heard that the Cobra S3 is very similar to this club, and a website with comparison of drivers shows that the AMP and the S3 are in the top 3 in the forgiveness category.

Also, I'm probably going to be moving to an X-stiff shaft and 8.5 loft as my swing speeds are more consistently hitting 108-109 MPH. My ball flight has been a bit high at times as well. I find that my best shots happen when I purposefully take an easy swing with my S-flex drivers (Aldila NV-65 and Aldila Voodoo by Titleist).

So I'd like to hear some thoughts from people who have hit both drivers, or own one or both of them. How similar are they in the forgiveness category? Feel? Please post your swing speeds/handicaps as well, please. I think I'm willing to buy an S3 without hitting one if I hear enough votes of confidence. It'd save me $160 over buying a new AMP! Thanks!

Wait until the weekends over ... maybe you will win one in the US Open prediction contest!

FWIW, my drives have been going a lot straighter with no noticeable distance lost (at least yet) after switching from a S shafted driver to an X shafted driver, and I have a slower swing speed than you. (104-ish)

I have the s3 it's a great club. I got it from my dad who had a regular shaft on it brought down to the local shop and they took a stiff shaft off a used s2 and threw it on for me. It's forgiving not the longest club but very forgiving.

What shaft did you put in it?

fujikura fit on max for the time being. They did a free switch for me. I am getting fitted for a new shaft shortly since it takes the same adapter as the amp they have all the fitting options. I like it with the fit on max but just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of it.

Nice to know it takes the same adapter as the AMP. I think for the price I can get, I have to pull the trigger, but I have to choose between two X stiff shafts:

  • Cobra Fujikura Blur TX 006
  • Mitsubishi Rayon JavlnFX M7

I want to choose the M7 because it seems like a more ubiquitous name. Are there any sites that do a head to head comparison of these?

EDIT: I found this chart from Cobra custom options PDF. It shows the Fuji (high-mid right) and M7 (low-mid left) fairly far apart...so it definitely does matter which I pick. I'm going a degree lower this time (9.5* -> 8.5*) so I think the higher launch shaft might be better than the low launch. The NV-65 is on there, which is what I have now...and I don't think I want anymore spin than what that one has and it's right next to the M7. AH. WHAT DO I DO?

I had the Mitsubishi Rayon JavlnFX M7 in my 9.5* Cobra L5V great shaft loved it. The blur is just the stock shaft nothing horrible about it though.  The 9.5 with the JavlnFX produced a piercing ball flight almost to low for me. So that combination may work for you.

Thanks for all the feedback. I just submitted a best offer on ebay for the M7 model. Hopefully it'll go through and I'll be playing a new driver next weekend!

The whole thing. Club head and shaft.

Alright I got it just now! It looks great at address. I can't wait to take it out to the range. Just swinging it dry, it feels very nice in my hands and through the downswing. I played an X-stiff in high school and I can't wait to start playing one again. The difference is me holding back to avoid hooking a stiff shaft and really laying into an X-stiff and bombing it. My average with a stiff has been ~275. I hope I can see that increase to 280-285 now that I can really beat the crap out of the ball the way I want to.

I will post my thoughts once I hit it.

Can anyone help me with the aft adjustability for the s3? I just rotated it to the closed position, but when I hold the club in the same spot on the grip as when it is neutral the clubhead is almost on completely backwards. Am I supposed to hold it so the clubhead looks the same at address as it does in neutral? This completely rotates the shaft and grip around. Also, how tightly do you have to tighten on the shaft to hear the click?

Don't hold it at the some spot on the grip. And it may seem like you are over tightening but you will hear a click eventually and stop then.
