Little rant here, This has happened to me a lot lately:

I have been playing a lot of golf lately as a single or with a buddy as a twosome. I show up on the first tee after being paired up with other players, I introduce myself and I head back to the back tees. The people I am paired with obviously were planning to play the middle tees but when I head back they come back with me. I tell them its no big deal that they can play the white tees but here they come and none of them should be back there. Then they struggle the whole 18 when they would have had a much better time had they stayed on the middle tees.

Today it was really bad, I was paired up with two other guys. One of the guys stayed on the middle tees but the other one decided to come back to the back tees with my buddy and me. It took him 4 holes to get his first tee ball in the air because he was swinging so hard. The par 3's all play 200+ at my course and he couldn't hit his driver to them. On #10 my buddy and I moved up to the middle tees just so he would too because we were having a difficult time staying up with the group in front of us.

Like I said this has happened every time I have played lately. Why do people feel they need to play the back tee boxes just because I want to? It puts pressure on me and several times I have played up to avoid the problem when I really wanted to play back. These are all really nice people, they just weren't good enough to play the blue tees. What would you do? Do you let other players determine what tees you play?

I play the back tee's no matter who I am with. Never really had an issue with people wanting to go back there with me. Once or twice I have played the white tees, but that was mainly due to it being a game while at work, and I needed to get some face time with the other players. I just didn't use my driver when playing from there

It usually works the opposite for me.  If I am playing the back tees and join up to a group, I usually will go and play from the middle tees.  However I see where you are coming from.  It is all about not feeling immasculated.  How ever the way these people usually play from the back tees usually takes care of that.  I don't think you can do any more than you did in telling them that it is alright for them to play up.

Um...don't pair up then with anybody and wait your turn as a single?  Or perhaps get three buddies that are equivalent and book your tee times with them exclusively?  Or don't sweat it?

I know for a fact that I belong nowhere near the back tees and I have no problem teeing it forward. There have been times I went out with my uncle who plays the back tees and I play the middle tees. We still have the same amount of good conversation as our shots end up closer to eachother.

I always want to play the tees in the 6500 or so yard range, which are usually one set behind the "whites."  Sometimes they are the back tees, sometimes they aren't.  But I always play it by ear.  Usually what happens is one person asks aloud which tees we're all playing, and if somebody else is adamant about which set they want, I roll with it.  If nobody speaks up, then I will say I was planning on playing the blues.  I don't want to be the "hotshot" who's going to play the back tees while they are up at the whites, nor do I want to encourage them to play tees they aren't comfortable with, so if they seem hesitant I will happily play the middle tees with them.

I also agree with NEOHmark that if it was going to bother me so much, I would find a way to avoid it.  Either find players with similar abilities or play by myself.  (In fact, if I ever get to play the course down the street here by myself, I am going to give it a shot from the way back tees just for the heck of it (7k yards), but I'm not going to drag anybody else back there with me)

My normal 4some plays the middle tees, so when I don't play with them I like to play back. I hit the ball a long way and I am scratch. I shot 67 (-5)  yesterday from the back tees, I think I can handle them.

Perhaps I shouldn't give a crap if someone treks back to the back tees and procedes  to kill themselves for 18 holes, but I do. I just don't like it that people feel they need to play back there like I will be lonely or something. I am a big proponent for people playing the correct tee box for their skill level.

No I totally get why you are playing the back tees. I was in response to Tuflehundon, he's a 16 handicap and plays the tips.

I am currently trying to get my friend to play shorter tees. We have a standing rule that we play "1 up from the back". That usually works fine but when we play 6500 or less, he plays much better unless the course is just super tight or has lots of water etc. When we get above that, he struggles and I know he does not have as much fun. I am a handicap freak so I know that each tee has its own rating and slope so it doesn't matter where I play so long and I play to my potential given those numbers.

Saturday we played a course that was 6168 and since most courses play shorter than the stated yardage it was very short. Par 72 with rating 70.2 and slope 120. I shot a 78 which was -3 Net. I was very happy with my round even though we always think we could have done better. He shot a 97 which was Net -1 and another buddy shot 91 (he usually plays 98-105). So we all had good rounds. But both of them thought we should move back next time because there was a lot of Driver/Wedge holes. I say, why not play these tees and have some fun. Get some birdie chances and feel good.

Ultimately I don't care other than the fact I don't want them to get so frustrated playing golf that they quite. I need playing partners :)

I don't think he was talking to you.  (He quoted a different post there)

And to expand on my comment ... I was speaking as a 10 HDCP who can have fun playing any set of tees.  If (let's be optimistic and say when!) I ever got to scratch then that would be a different story.  I would always want to play back because the course would be "too easy" from further up.  But, still, human nature what it is, you are always going to find the guys who want to be macho and join you, or the guys who want to be snotty "who does this guy think he is?", enough that it's not really worth it to get too worked up about it.

Maybe a quick conversation about how far they usually drive or even ask approximate handicap? Even at 16 I play white on new courses or stuff over 6500. Sometimes you just gotta tell them they need to tee forward.

I've got a buddy who's a legit 29 handicap, does not carry a driver and insists on playing blues....because sometimes he can whack his 3w 260 off the box... it's no fun for either of us watching him hack it up for 5 hour. Most of the time he isn't even finishing the last 3 holes. Plus he swings hard as hell trying to force that once a round 260 3w drive to keep up with my drives which average about that... But he gets to boast when he finally out drives me with his 3w... and is still hitting from the rough.

I usually play the farthest forward men's tees. At the courses I play, they tend to play about 6000 to 6100 yards. I am just starting outand really enjoying the game, but I can only hit my 3 hybrid 180-190 and my 4 hybrid 160. If I play the forward tees I can actually make a green in regulation (340-420 yards at the courses I play from these tees, if I get a 220 yard drive, which is about my max, then GIR is about accuracy, not my max distance). My high handicap is due to 2-3 penalty stokes/shanked balls per round, but the forward tees give me chances at birdies/pars, making the round fun. I plan on playing the forward tees until I can drive 250 fairly consistently, and can hit around 150 with my shorter irons.

Sorry!

I liked it at a course I played in Michigan a few years ago. The starter put people at the correct tee box on the number one tee. I was the only one in my group allowed to play back. I had to show proof of my handicap to play back there.

Really? Man all the courses should do this kind of thing. Could you imagine how much faster people would play, if they play from the correct tees? No more 6 hour rounds!!!!

I don't care what tees people play from as long as their 18 holes are finished within 4 and a half hours MAX

I don't think that your handicap is a fool proof  method for determining what tee box you should play from.  About two years ago, I would consistently score better from the tips (6650 yards) than the middle tees (6300 yards) at my home course.  The back tees just fit my game better.  A lot of the fairways dogleg and when playing the  middle tees I would usually drive through the doglegs.  Now that I have learned a little more about golf and realized that I don't have to hit driver off the tee, I can shoot 2-5 shots better from the middle tees than the back tees.  However, I usually play the back tees for 1) I have more fun 2) I avoid hitting driver wedge on every par 4  and 3) I hit long enough to where playing the back doesn't slow down play.  I have a golf outing planned for later this year at a course were the tips are in excess of 7100 yards.  Unless I see a drastic improvement in my game in that time, I will be playing the gold tees ( about 6600 yards).

See that's the problem, we would probably still be out there if we hadn't moved up with this guy today. The tips at my course are 7000 yards it slows down the whole group when someone plays the wrong tees.

The good thing is my course is putting in a 4th tee box in front of the whites. Now maybe the white tee box will be back enough so people won't feel the urge to go all the way back.

I can agree with this somewhat. I think it has more to do with distance than handicap although most of the time there is a correlation between the two. Either way people would enjoy the game more if they took their ego out of tee selection. If you cannot reach most of the par 4's in two with a decent drive and a good second shot you should move forward until you can. We have a group of old guys at my course that began playing the forward "ladies" tees this year. They love it because they can actually reach the par 4's and par 3's in regulation sometimes. One came in all excited the other day because he had 5 pars for the first time in like 20 years.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
