I have found that I get good impact and lag when my left wrist is bowed through impact. But often time I have to slow down my swing and manipulate my wrists into that position. Any one have any tips on getting the left wrist to bow without manipulation.

Thank...

Carl.

Old thread, I'll bump as this relates to a question I wanted to post on.

I have read discussions in other forums that the bowed wrist through impact 'opens the face'. I disagree. I think there may be differences in definition of what 'closed' and 'open' are for instructors versus my simplistic approach so I throw out the examples below for critique.

1. If you keep the clubhead soled in the address position (just behind the ball) and bow the wrist  you will have to move your left arm forward of & slightly above where it was to keep the club soled. In this condition (left hand well ahead of the ball) the face is definitely delofted, but it looks like the face has closed slightly to the arc and the ball relative to a neutral wrist address.

2. If you hold your left hand in the address position and bow the left wrist then the club travels back along the arc to a point well behind the hands. It now appears open to the ball, but I think this is mainly due to the club moving back along the arc. I think it is still closed a touch to the arc...if you were to hold this position and just rotate through to the club soled behind the ball, the face will be delofted & slightly closed to both the arc and ball relative to a neutral left wrist at address and pretty much the same as example 1.

Would you agree? Can anyone clarify the 'accepted definitions' of what an open and closed clubface are other than ad address (which I think I get)?

Kevin

I have a tendency to open the club face a bit in the backswing, so I intentionally bow my left wrist on most swings.  Bowing the wrist closes the face; can't really picture any argument otherwise.

As for how I do it, it's just a thought I have throughout the swing.  I definitely don't wait until I'm in the middle of the downswing to do it.  It's basically something I think about doing just before or during the transition.

    • Took my wedges in to get regripped and saw the local store had some leftover Pure grips, was pretty excited to see those still around. Got those put onto my wedges, I love these grips, they have such a great feel to them. Also picked up a brand new (opened and second hand) Cleveland Huntington Beach putter for a great price! About %50 of retail. It had been purchased by someone else who decided to buy a different putter and was never used. I love the feel of it.
    • I’m not sure I’m following you. My current plan is to take the bunkers out of play completely and hit something like a 6i to 130-150 range.
    • Day 139- Slow, swings with short practice club.
    • You might want to try a can of Bar Keepers Friend. Yes, it is abrasive, so just wet a sponge and dab it on. It has oxalic acid (no bleach like "Comet" kitchen cleanser), and it works wonders on stainless steel and other metals. Try it on a small area first to see what happens.
    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
