It's not super impressive but soooo many things worked out for me it all just fell together for a good round.

1. I played the same ball the whole round, never even come close to happening before (usually lose 2-3 a round to water) and I have also found my go to ball (Titleist DT SoLo).

2. I cleared every water hazard pretty easily because I breathed, took my time, and put into practice some tips an old friend of mine from NC was giving me (he's a +2 golfer and excellent teacher even via phone, I've known him for years and he's the one who actually got me interested in trying to learn to play).

3. Only one blow up hole, it's a blind par 5 that I actually drove well and landed in the fairway. For my second shot, I needed to keep the ball low I got it too high, nailed a limb in a tree that I was trying to go under and the ball went straight down and sat on the roots. Ended up taking 9 strokes to get out of that par 5 but the ball was hit to the fairway, my ball being too high on the second stroke was just inexperience so I didn't get too mad.

4. I shot a 49 (it's a local 9 hole course beside my house but it's my first time to break 50) and I left with a huge smile on my face. Sure it's an awful score but it's MY awful score with every stroke counted, using the same ball, and I found 2 mint pro v1's while searching for my ball in a dry stream bed full of grass when I came up short on the other par 5.

More time pitching in the back yard, more time on the driving range getting more distance while maintaining control and I may just break a 45 this year. When I can do that, I'll start venturing out to 18 hole courses but for now I'm happy with my local muni. 70 bucks a month and I play all I want.

Edit: I also introduced someone new to the game, he had his grandfathers clubs and some old balls and I think he shot a 159 but he had a great time. I'm leaving to go back to work Wednesday morning and he said the 2 weeks I'm gone he's going to spend them on the driving range every day and give me a run for my money when I get back. He's so rough he thought I was good hahahaha. Great time all around.

It really is relative. For a newbie, and even for the casual golfer, 49 simply is not an awful score. You're in a forum of avid golf players, many of whom have played their whole life. So the population is skewed to the highly proficient side.

For most of us, 49 is a very good score. So congrats!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks guys. Breaking 100 is definitely on the list. Just time, lots of work, and lots and lots of lost balls hahaha.

Yes it does. I picked up a new (to me) set of Callaway X18 irons this afternoon from craigslist and spent an hour fooling around the back yard. I hit them a lottttt better than what I have been playing with so maybe, just maybe, I can knock another stroke or two off before I have to go back to work.
