By shooting 80! I was just in the zone yesterday on a course I consider my home course. Par was 71, 6061 yards. It all just finally clicked! What's funny is it wasn't *that* hard. Just kept it in the fairway, so played a few hybrids and woods off the tee, and just did my best to control my ball on and around the greens. I was confident in my flat iron, and BOOM, 80! I'm still pretty damn ecstatic.

Yup some days the world goes grey and all you see is the shot shape you want when you stand behind the ball, you step up and hit it...

I love it when everything clicks... congrats... I remember my first 80... septerber 11, 2001... that was a weard drive home from the course at 11am, I was 16.

Nice.

I have this fantasy that the first time I break 80, that I'll shoot a 68 or 69.  Then I drove to Maine and played with a friend.  I shot an even 100.

Wow, that's pretty intense, probably fairly bittersweet. How long had you been playing to shoot 80 at 16? Im 21 now and I've been playing steadily since May 2011.

Awesome round man!

One thing I had a hard time with when I first broke 90, was don't expect it to happen all the time. I broke 80 once and haven't been under 85 since. Shooting under 90 consistently is my goal now days. My last few rounds are pretty much 92,98,100,96,94. Between those rounds I've played the exec course several times and have had extremely varying scores, Monday I played 1 over while Tues I was 12 over. There is one par 4 here btw, consistency is what I strive for most versus score.

Haha, I didn't even think about that. I was in school that morning, like a good student.

And yes, I know it's hard to believe and I'm sure there's a few that think I'm lying. But I'm not out for internet forum glory; at least not dishonest internet forum glory

I agree! I couldn't believe I chopped off ten strokes from my lowest. I don't expect to shoot that low all the time now, especially on the courses I don't play as often. I'm playing first thing Sunday morning, so we'll see how it goes! I'd say the biggest thing was my putts from inside 6'. I look at the hole in close now, and spot line from beyond 6'. I two-putted, or better, every hole except for one. I wish I could be that confident all the time. The best of it all was to make it with a birdie on 18. Two fairway shots, a GIR and an 8 footer for birdie. I was pretty sure I shot 81 or 82, then I tallied it up, twice, and it came out 80!

I remember the first time I broke 90... It was on a par 3 course in Lebanon, Missouri. I was on fire that day!

OP, well done ! I am sure you are still buzzing !

I remember every shot I made the first time I broke 90....shot 87 at the Mines GCC, just 12 days before the 2011 CIMB Asia Pacific Classic a PGA Tour sanctioned event here. The thing is, I shared this with the caddie on the 16th hole....and he was super supportive and kept me focused on the objective 'don't worry boss...just bogey this and the next 2, you will be at 89...no need to get greedy..'

I went par-par-bogey....I swear, I was almost in tears when the bogey putt dropped in the final hole....haha

Cheers

Ray

You hit another milestone in your golf career. Well done

It has only happened a couple of times to me (not close to 80, and on my home course) and all I could figure out was consistency and lots of good luck contributed greatly. Oh, and the occasional long putt . This is why we love the game!

Congrats.  Must've been a crazy day to shoot an 80!  I've never broken 90 yet, but I'll assume the first time I do I'll shot an 88 or 89.....fine by me!

Congrats and hopefully your new found success on the course continues. Last time I broke 80 I followed it up with my worst round ever. Including a whiffed 2nd shot after complete failure hitting a 60y grounder from the first tee. It got so silly I actually stopped keeping score. I remember losing more than one ball on a few holes. It was an insane reversal.

Dave :-)

Those days are great.

When I was playing a lot a few years ago, a good round would be in the 76-80 range, with an average round probably being an 82.  One day I pulled a 72 out of nowhere.  Just seemed like hitting the fairways and the greens were very easy, and the misses left me in good shape.

Congrats you shattered the 90 bench mark. Would have been pretty cool had you shot 79. You could say you've shot in the 70s and 90s but never in the 80s.
