Hey guys!

I've been  wondering about this a while now and I figured what better place to go than here? But I've had several people tell me I should get bigger grips (I'm 6'6" so you can imagine how big my hands are) because the ones I have now are standard size and are technically "too small for me". I've been playing all my life with this size grip so you could say I've gotten used to it, but I'm hoping to basically empty out my bag and get some clubs that are made for me so I've got no more excuses! Anyways, my real question is what exactly does having the correct grip size do for you, or in my case, how will larger grips benefit me now if I've grown used to (so I think) to the standard size.

Thanks for the help!

I'm 5' 10" and I use standard size grips, but I have learned that I like 2 wraps of tape under the grips.... in fact I use 3/4" tape and spiral wrap as tight as I can without overlap... say 1/4" gap, then another wrap in the other direction.... that works for me... I would say do a grip size fitting if you can.I think you can do it at golfsmith... and i would guess others. A larger grip should help keep from using to much hands, but I believe to large a grip can cause you to have problem squaring the clubfase at impact... next time I regrip my set I may have to try 2 wraps of masking tape and a wrap of wide grip tape... I'm getting ready to play around with a snake eyes 8 iron build, I may have to tray the extra layer of tape and see how it feels.

They are selling really fat putter grips now that basically make it much easier to eliminate your hands in the putting stroke... I tried one a few months ago and I thought I could definitely put well with it, I just dont know how I would get it in and out of my bag... my putter grip fights me sometimes now.

I've been tinkering for a long time and finally found what I like. I'm 6'1" with hands that can palm a basketball effortlessly. I, according to charts I've seen, need an oversize grip. I combated this by adding 7 layers of tape under standard grips for my irons and wedges and 7 layers under left hand and 9 under right on midsize grips on my woods. Now my fingers don't stab my palms anymore when I grip the club. It probably won't work for you but I guess what I'm getting at is trial and error. I don't really fit all the standard sizing charts so I've learned to go with what works and make my own adjustments.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
