Do you know people that think they drive the ball further than they actually do?

I think it's hilarious reading some posts ( not here) on sites that do club reviews, and reading how this 27 handicap hits the ball 290-310yds..LOL!

Do you guys have friends that think they're longer than they actually are?

If so, get the Sky Caddie and you 'll see that a 250 yard drive is actually a bomb! We used it yesterday on the course and you can set it to measure drives and 255 was the longest any one of use hit our drives...and I play with some big hitters, so they thought..

Please share your story about the guy that thinks he hits it 300..

One of my fathers buddies thought, 20 years ago, with a persimmon club and balata ball, could regularly drive 315 yards - when tour pros were averaging 250.

Now, I doubt he could drive 200 yards. He's lost it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the poor yardage markings on a lot of public courses. I have always been an average hitter as far as distance goes but in the last few years I have added a bit of distance to my drives. On one hole in particular on my home course I have driven it inside the 100 yard marker quite a few times this year. The hole is measured at 380 from the tees we play so I am getting it to 280 - 300 yards or so According to those markings...

It would be awesome to have a more accurate measurement but for now that is all I have to go by so I guess I can hit it 300 yards

There's a thread somewhere in here about the most common lie in golf and yep, this was probably the most popular response. I doubt there's anyone in here who doesn't know someone like this. As I've said before, I continue to be amazed how many "300 yard drivers" I can outdrive with my 230-250 yard tee shot.

Yeah, I agree with the post saying courses are poorly measured. The Sky Caddie was amazing in truly getting the length of your drive! Our 9th hole is 400 yard par hill, slightly uphill and we have a member who played 180 rounds last year, yes you read that correct, 180 rounds! This guy has played with alot of people as you can imagine and he said he hasn't seen too many people inside of 150yds! Where are all the 300 hitters?

Part of the problem is driving ranges. They always set up on the top of a hill, so even if the 300 yard sign is really 300 yards (doubtful) it's also 70 feet down hill. So if you hit a decent 250 yard drive, it will actually carry 280, then roll another 30 because there's nothing to stop it. And they don't have to be straight. So hit about 10 of those and you start thinking about joining the tour.

It is funny because we have a lot of short Par 4's on my course. One is measured at 278 and I have been on the green or in the bunker to the left many times off the tee. We have another that is measured around 287 and it is downhill the whole way and I have never hit the green... I have been maybe 10 - 15 yards short a few times so either that one is really way longer than it says or the other are way shorter... not sure...

I gives me a lot of appreciation for the tour guys who are actually hitting it 300+.

It's funny this subject came up because yesterday on the course I was talking about this with my playing partners. You hit a drive that really feels good, then you get to your ball and based on the length of the hole and how much distance you have left to the flag, you realize that it wasn't quite as long as you thought.

I hit a drive yesterday that, if asked, I would have said was 300 yards(and then felt pretty stupid afterwards). 490 yard par 5(tees were exactly at the 490 marker on the tee), dogleg left. Hit a draw around the corner, probably one of the best drives I've EVER hit. Got to the ball and realized that I still had 215 to the hole.

So I guess I'm maxed out at 275.....no 300 bombs for me.

What I think is hilarious is how everyone discounts someone with a high handicap. I'm sure there are many people who can get close to 300 yards driving and who have no short game whatsoever.

Now, I do doubt that 95% of the people who say they drive 300 can. But, the length of their drive and their handicap are not necessarily related at all. For instance, my dad can drive 270-290 consistently. But, then it takes him a good 2-3 shots to hit the green and another 2-3 putts to drop the ball. So, he can drive fairly well, but he sucks at everything else. I'm sure that some of your so-called "liars" maybe aren't pulling your leg. They just happen to suck at everything else.

I think people misinterpret their drives by using length from the hole and total distance to calculate how far they hit it. If the hole is perfectly flat, perfectly straight, and there is no wind--that is the only way you can tell how far you hit it while on the course. I've been 210 out on a 500 yard par five with my 4 wood, but I sure as hell have never hit it 290 even with wind at my back and downhill. If I catch it good, it probably goes 215-220. But when you add in some angles with a dogleg, some wind at your back, and some elevation changes, even the biggest hacker in the world can think he hits it as far as the pros.

This, more than anything, explains my 290-yard shots. I never measured 'em with GPS, just a 490 yard hole and hit to the 200 yard marker.

I've hit 300yd drives before, as well as most of you I'm sure. The key word is "average". To average 300yds off the box is a pretty big deal, because that means you're consistently hitting balls from 285-320yds, EVERY DRIVE. I don't know about you all, but on my best day, I average about 275yds with an occasional 300 yarder, but definitely not a 300 yard average.

I've hit probably 3 or 4, 300yrd drives this summer. I'm an 18 year old who is "sneaky long" -- I'm pretty strong but not somebody who looks like they can outdrive everyone in their foursome.

My drive just clicked one day, I go to a college with a golf course on campus (the only college that has the option to include green fees in tuition) and one day I went to the public course with the 2nd best golfer on our golf team (can shoot consistent 70-69) this kid has an aura of golf unlike any I have ever seen. So after playing about 14 holes and with me trying to swing arms only to cure my slice and only plunking it out 220 yds he taught me how to use my hips and emphasized how important the left shoulder and spine angle is to focus power and I stepped up to the tee and hit the best drive of my life up until that moment.

My drive is actually misleading to my game, I have never shot in the 70's but that is my goal for the summer. But I can step up to a tee and knock it consistently 265. And I have hit a handful of 300 yard drives and hit a few out of the range from time to time. I think hitting long drives is all about getting loose. My drive quality usually peaks right after the turn, no matter how long you warm up at the range it won't connect until the course.

My home course has gps in the carts and every drive I hit I measure it from the given distance from the tips. My dad hates me for it, saying the only person he's seen hit a ball farther than me is his brother (who is the longest driver I've ever seen in my life)

Yeah, I think the key word is "Average". If you average 300, that means you crush one 350 once in a blue moon, and dont often hit below, say, 280 or so.

I personally average about 240-250, every now and then I bump it out there 300, more so lately because it's so dry.

My handicap is going in the wrong direction this summer, it's now closer to 20...so are you saying I can't hit the long ball?

It is tough to make a blanket statement that a higher handicapper can't hit it long, obviously consistency is an issue but I hit some long drives, usually at least one per round, and like I said, if the yardage markers are correct I often hit one 280 - 290 each round or two... Now if I could chip and putt better I wouldn't be such a high handicapper...

Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
