I hit my 5-wood about 200. I'm thinking about what club would be the best to use to get about that distance or a little better off the tee with trouble on both sides. Doesn't have to be useful for any other situation - I'll make room for an 'entire club' for the purpose.

shortened 460cc driver? thriver?

2 hybrid?

sgi long iron?

some specialty 'driving iron'?

I was thinking about a muscle back long iron with the idea that if i mishit it it may stay short of trouble compared to a high moi club. Crazy?

Think this club should be high loft or low? I can imagine some advantage either way.

Nothing is enough better than just hitting the 5 or 3-wood to justify a specialty club?

What's wrong with the 5 wood you already have and presumably like?

Not a lot. I just spray it around a bit too widely for comfort in those situations with penalty strokes lurking on both sides. I'm extremely conservative on course and just hate not having a safe shot. Getting better with what I've got may well be the best path. I'm just fishing for options.

I personally like my 3 hybrid. Dead solid, 205 yds, every time.

I like my 22 degree hybrid - very reliable club for keeping it in play. GI long iron is not a bad idea either. My set starts at a 4 and it's no problem to hit solidly and reliably safe to about 185.

Why not just hit the 5W? Practice with it off a tee, and see if you can maybe get a teed-up draw you can count on. Everyone needs a failsafe "go to" shot for tight situations, preferably shaped to the left or right side of the fairway.

BTW, what's the longest iron you carry (and can hit decently?)

No reason why not. Just thinking a specialty chicken stick might be inherently more accurate.

I carry 3w 5w 7w 9w(27*) 5-iron

I like the high trajectory and ease from poor lies.

Off a tee with nothing to carry I'm fine with a 1 iron

At least I was the last time I hit one 20 years ago.

I don't think my swing speed has dropped much yet but at 52 it may drop soon

22 wouldn't be enough club for me. 19 probably borderline. I'd prefer something that goes as far as my 19* 5-wood

I used one of these last year ... it's basically a hybrid driving iron (hollow, not solid metal) - very pure feeling when hit well... I have since put alot of time into the 3 wood & it's a more versatile club for me now (my 3w is shortened considerably - so much more effective off the turf & money off the tee now).    These driving irons are cheap on eBay - you could try one out & see if you like it for not alot of $$     - just make sure you get one in 15 degree loft, not 19 degrees if you want a dedicated driving iron. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KNIGHT-15-5-DRIVING-IRON-RIGHT-HAND-BUBBLE-GRAPHITE-INTERMEDATE-FLEX-41-1-2-/230836987953?pt=Golf_Clubs&hash;=item35bef4e831

PS - best club I've ever found for punching out from under trees

it's just an eBay ad ... eBay is great - I bet I've bought 2 dozen clubs off there.     You just have to check out the sellers feedback rating & it'll give you an indication if buyers have been happy with past transactions ... all you have to do is sign up & have a paypal account - piece of cake.    This guy has a 100% positive feedback rating, so he's reputable.

I guess it depends. The V-techs have a longer shaft and produce good distance. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a 19 degree out there 200, same as your 5 wood. Only way to know is to demo some different brands, lofts, etc. But you also said you wanted a club that would help you keep it in play, so the trade off may be less distance for more accuracy. Good luck.

The tradeoff is already figured in the driver down to 5-wood. Thanks for the input.

Hit your driver! Just choke down and swing 50 %. Take it to the range I guarantee it will fly straight and keep you out of trouble.

If your swing speed and contact are such that you could do a vintage 1-iron justice, why don't you just use your 5-iron for 200 yards?
