Adding a 5 hybrid to my bag?

Hello,

I'm in my third season of golf. I am just not comfortable hitting any long irons lower than a 6 [and even the 6 is iffy at times]...

I currently have a 4 hybrid, which I am very comfortable with. I am considering "converting" my 5 iron to a 5 hybrid.

Actually, to complete the thought, I'd consider getting a 3-4-5 hybrid set which is available at a golf shop near me for quite cheap. And because of the extra club, I'd take out my 5 wood, which I honestly don't think I've used this year on the course.

Any thoughts on this maneuver? I really like hybrids...

Smart move you may want to even go after a 6h. These are legal clubs that help players who have dificulty with long and mid irons, more people should be using them than want to admit it for some reason because they feel some sort of compromise of their prowess or something lol. Paddy Harrington won majors with a hybrid in his bag so that should make it crystal clear for the rest of us.

I put a 5h in my bag a few months ago, best thing I ever did. I carry a driver, 3 wood (15*), 3h (19*), 4h (22*), 5h (25*), 6-9i, pw,aw,sw 58*w.

Very happy with my set up now.

I also carried a 5w but found I hit my 3h the same distance.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the advice.

In the interest of saving a little money, I'm going to start by just purchasing a 5 hybrid, as I have my eye on an inexpensive Adams from the shop near me. Since it's the near end of the season, I can think about bigger and better things in 2013...

Or maybe the snow will stay away like last winter and there WILL be no off season!

Couldn't you drop the 5 iron and completely replace it with the 5 hybrid and then still be able to keep the 5 wood? An interesting idea, if you hit hybrids well, is to try out an 18* hybrid instead of a 5 wood, as they are essentially the same club with a different design.

My bag:

Driver: G10 10.5* w/ Pro Launch Red Reg

3 Wood: G10 w/ Pro Launch Red Reg

18* and 21* hybrids: G10 with Pro Launch Red Stiff

4-PW: Ping Eye 2 Irons w/ Reg GS 95

56* and 60*: Tour-S Rustique Wedges w/ Stiff KBS Tour

Putter: Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Newport

Audaxi,

Yes, that was my point as suggested in the first post. My wish is to "convert" my nearly unhittable 5 iron into a 5 hybrid, and just leave the 5 iron at home...

And yes, I also noticed that a 3 hybrid and a 5 wood have pretty much the same loft. So maybe next season I'll go full monty and purchase a 3-4-5 hybrid set...

I love my adams a7os 5 hybrid.  So easy to hit.  A nice gentle swing from nearly any lie will go about the same distance (for me, my 5h is about 150y club).  I sometimes bring my tommy armour 845s silverscot 5 iron, as well, because I feel like it is a little easier to shape if I absolutely need to try to do that.  I can put a slight draw on the 5i, but if I try and hook the 5h it just goes straight (my natural shot is a fade).

Interesting thought BioGolf. I think I'm still at the point in my golf career where I still need to focus on consistently getting the ball off the ground and moving in the intended direction... Still, I have heard that you do sacrifice a little control when you move from the iron to a hybrid.

I just put a 5h in the bag.  Just wasn't getting along with a 5i, and it left a pretty large yardage hole in the bag.  I was 180 6i, 190 5i, 215 4h...and seemed I was always a few yards short with the 5i.   Put together a 25* TEE XCG with Xstiff Accra shaft, .5" shorter then what I'd normally play a hybrid, goal of making a perfect 200yd club.  Works like a charm, and I can choke down an inch to make it a 190yd club.  Lost a little versatility with punch shots from under trees, but think I can learn this with some reps.

Last year I added a 5H to my bag and removed my 5 iron.   It was a very good move for myself and my game.

I now use:  Driver, 3W, 5W, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6-9, PW, GW, SW, Putter - Found I used my 5W more than my Lob Wedge

It's funny how we all approach the game differently.     Hybrids have never been all that consistent for me - and I just like the feel of a purely struck SGI long iron.     My focus is to just carry ONE hybrid and force myself to learn to hit that one club well (I do like the one I'm carrying now - surprises me how much I like it actually).      Multiple hybrids have always brought in all kinds of inconsistencies for me ...

Well, I've done it...

Just purchased a gently used Adams Idea A7 5 Hybrid, regular flex. It's actually the same length as my Adams 4 hybrid, which I think is a good thing.

I'm about to take it to the range... be back in a few hours with the results!

Could be the best move you ever made. It may make you want more hybrids.  Good luck with it.  Just remember that it's recommended to play it like an iron, hitting down on it rather than sweeping it like you would a fairway wood.

Yes, thank you Mike... I take a divot ahead of the ball when I strike a hybrid... Well, at least that's how I PLAN it... :)

I think the result was good at the range today. Got it in the air, and it was going about 145 yards, which falls in nicely with my other clubs. I also found myself hitting my 5 wood better than anticipated, So I think I'll stick with that for now instead of a 3h.

Unless money suddenly rains from the sky and I get a new set with full fitting :)...

Thanks folks for helping me with this process.

Yes please clarify ha..

As you can see in my sig, I have the 3/4/5 hybrid. I don't even touch the 4.. it's pointless. But I love the 3 and 5. Just practice with it and it'll be a dream. DON'T TOP THE BALL.

Will do coach.

And Sean, I was talking about the 5 hybrid I just purchased... If you look back 5 posts or so, I describe my purchase. The following post [after Mike's reply] describes how I hit it...

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆
