With the new drivers of today I was wondering what the difference in distances you will get with the different lofts of the driver. I use a 12 deg Cobra Fspeed with a reg. shaft. I have a pretty fast club speed. I was wondering if I will get a significant increase in distance with a lower loft club. Using course markers to the best of my ability, I will say that I drive the ball 260 -270 yds. I get a lot of height on my drivers. I probably need a stiffer shaft but it was hard to turn down a free club. I don't have a place to demo clubs or get my swing speed near me.

It's all about optimum launch angle for the person. I don't think there is a general rule of thumb or I have never heard of one.

Like Silvertree said every individual has a different set of optimum characteristics. If you don't have access to a launch monitor then work out your 5 iron distance and work back. First you have to work out how far you hit your five iron (carry). Then you can use a chart from the following website to calculate your swing speed.

http://www.theworldofgolf.com/clubfitting.asp

Since your 5 iron swing speed is normally 80% of your driver swing speed you can extrapolate your driver swing speed (by multiplying your 5 iron swing speed by 1.2). Then you use a virtual launch monitor such as the one provided at Sonic Boom Golf to determine your optimal launch characteristics.

That said, if you have severe swing faults no equipment will make you better.... :(

One more thing, if you're not making solid contact with your driver you can incur pretty extreme drops in efficiency and subsequent drops in ball speed and distance even if though you may be making 100 mph swings. In which case, this process becomes entirely invalid....

Just noticed that that website has the driver speed from 5-iron distance so no cheesy multiplication should be necessary in this case.

I have a 13.5* driver only because I was hitting really low "stingers" with my 10.5* so my pro suggested i get 13.5*...You'd probably get more distance out of a 10.5* driver, HOWEVER, it'll take some time to adjust to because it's probably gonna go pretty low at first.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
