Does he actually start playing some nike clubs? Or are they some really custom clubs with a swoosh?

Rory plays blades and between Nike and Titleist, both their offerings are not that far off from each other. The finish, topline, and grooves are the biggest differences, but generally the feel and playability of a blade is similar across most manufacturers. I don't expect Rory to play a custom Nike blade, which is actually a Titleist forging and I doubt Nike would have allowed that to happen. The only club I see exceptions being made is his Scotty.

??? Watney is 6ft 2 & Rory is 5ft 9 nearly half a foot between them?

Hopefully none of them will follow the career paths of AK & Casey.

5 inches is close but maybe I meant build rather than stature. I said similar, not identical - like they can wear similarly cut clothing.

I don't know their life stories as well as I thought. I've already commented more on this topic more than I cared to 3 posts ago, so carry on.

It is strange... I don't even see where you can buy the shirts Tiger wears.  Like this one... I thought was really cool looking.  But I've never seen it in the box retail or pro shops.

They have a lot of room for improvement.

Like I said, usually it will show up on Nike's direct site within a couple weeks.

Interesting to note how times have changed.... Back in the sixties, when you could only buy Titleist balls and clubs at a golf course pro shop, they went with the advertising slogan "Nobody is paid to play Titleist". They were the best selling ball back then and the most played on the pro tour. Now everybody is paid to play one brand or another.

I have to be honest... If I was a tour pro and some company came to me and said we'll give you 20 million dollars to use a little bit of our gear and wear our clothing I would have to take it as well.  I guess I'm just greedy like that. d3_drool.gif

Most would think you're crazy if you didn't.  Ideally you want the gear you're paid $20M to play to help you achieve your professional goals in the sport.  If Nike gear results in Rory finishing outside the Top 125 (it won't) I doubt he'll get the full value of the contract.

Nike is going to give him $250 million and this is what he says about his new equipment?  a2_wink.gif

DUBAI (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy has no fears that ditching the Titleist equipment that has taken him to number one in the world will result in any diminishing of his golfing powers.

Asked by reporters in Dubai on Tuesday if he had any concerns the change would jeopardize his confidence or form, McIlroy replied: "No, not at all.

"I think all the manufacturers make great equipment nowadays and it's all very similar - a lot of them get their clubs made at the same factories. I don't think it will make any difference."

Twice major winner McIlroy will bid a fond farewell to his old clubs at the $8 million DP World Tour Championship that starts on Thursday, the end-of-season showpiece event on the European Tour.

"I've started the process of trying a few new things," said the 23-year-old Northern Irishman.

"I'm still playing with my Titleist clubs - this is the last week - but I've tinkered about a little bit with the new ones, enough to feel comfortable going into next season."

I imagine that is not exactly the ringing endorsement Nike wanted from him.  However, because of that it comes across to me as being pretty genuine and honest.  I also imagine that it won't affect their bottom line all that much, because it's not front page news and I'm guessing their main audience isn't really going to even realize he doesn't play Titleist anymore until the first couple of big tournaments in January when he has a big swoosh on his bag on international TV.

Doesn't Nike let their staff players use the bag as a form to showcase other sponsors? z5_smartass.gif

Agree, the honesty is refreshing and what he's saying is the truth when it comes to tour players.  It's not like he's been using the same irons for several years, he switched last year to Titleist's 712 MB iron.  I also don't think he's a hardcore equipment guy like Tiger or Faldo.

Wait just a second...so you're saying he's leaving Titleist?!?

Both Titleist and Rory have said they are parting ways. Everyone is assuming he is switching to Nike.
